Dear Parents, Students and Friends
I hope the Easter break provided some much-needed rest for you all. I am sorry to hear that Covid is still impacting families. It is certainly a persistent cycle that we are managing. I do hope we all remain well as winter approaches. Please know I understand the level of fatigue that is widespread across our community. Go gently and please reach out if the college can be of more support.
Welcome
A very warm welcome to Mr Matt King. As previously communicated, Mr King joins us from Ulladulla High and has been permanently appointed as our new Maths teacher. Mr King is no stranger to Carroll, and it is wonderful to be welcoming him back. Again, congratulations to Mr King on his appointment!
Congratulations
Some very exciting news to share! Baby Max Ayden Mulally was born on 13 April weighing 3.67kg and 51.5cm long. I extend our warmest congratulations to Mr Sean Mulally and his wife Yasmin on the safe arrival of their first child.
Congratulations also to newlyweds, Ms Louisa Bonner and husband, Ewan. Best wishes from the Carroll College community.
In other exciting news, Mrs Danielle Ciuffetelli and husband, Brendan are expecting their first child later this year. Congratulations to both Danielle and Brendan.
Parish News
Fr George Azhakath, Parish Priest at Moruya has announced that he will be returning to India shortly. At this stage, there has been no announcement regarding his replacement. I will update you as I receive more information.
We also received correspondence recently that the Archbishop has accepted a request from Fr Martins to extend his leave as Parish Priest of Batemans Bay until December 2022 to enable Fr Martins to continue his studies. For this to happen, there has been a priest swap. From 29 April until 16 December 2022, Fr Martins will be priest in residence at St Thomas Aquinas Charnwood and Fr Tom Thornton will be Parish Priest at Batemans Bay. Deakin Eden will be ordained this year and will continue to support at St Bernard’s. We very much look forward to welcoming Fr Tom back to St Bernard’s and supporting Deakin Eden for the remainder of the year.
Director’s Visit
Director, Mr Ross Fox will be visiting the college on Tuesday 10 May. The Director will arrive at 12.00pm and will begin his visit with a tour of the college with Captains and Vice Captains and will visit some classrooms. Afterwards he will have a lunch meeting with the executive team. We look forward to his visit.
Online Family Event – Family Engagement Makes a Difference
The Council of Catholic School Parents Archdiocese of Canberra and Goulburn (CSPACG) in collaboration with Catholic Education are hosting an online family event in Term 2. This event coincides with National Families Week - Australia’s annual celebration of the importance of families.
This event is an opportunity for families to learn more about the Catholic School Parent Council and the ways it provides advocacy, leadership, representation, and support for families in our Archdiocese. There will also be an opportunity to discover some practical ways for families to engage in their child’s learning. The flyer which promotes this event can be found further on in this newsletter. Registration can be completed via the link on the flyer.
College Executive
Each semester we have a rotational position on the College Executive team for senior leaders. Mrs Emma Mullins joins the executive team for Terms 2 and 3. Mrs Mullins expressed interest some time ago and it is now her opportunity to gain experience at this level. I welcome her to the team and wish her well.
Additional Pupil Free Days – Term 2
As communicated earlier this week, Catholic Education is expanding on the support offered to schools to facilitate professional learning due to the pandemic. This term, Director Ross Fox has provided each school with an additional two days of Professional Learning. The additional pupil free days for St Mary’s Moruya, St Bernard’s Batemans Bay and Carroll College Broulee will be the last two days of Term 2. These dates are Thursday 30 June and Friday 1 July 2022. The additional days will certainly support us in planning for Term 3 and focusing on Catalyst initiatives.
Meet our Team
This week, I have included photos and positions of our Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA) and Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE) Teachers.

A Message from our Assistant Principal Pastoral Care
Welcome back to Term 2. It has been wonderful to see everyone back and ready for a term focused on learning and participation in the wide range of community events we have on offer.
As you drive into the College grounds our first garden features the three flagpoles supporting the Australian, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island flags. Due to their exposure to the elements of sun, wind and rain, our flags were looking a little worn. On Thursday morning Ruby Harrington, Samuel Bath and Tanesha Dennis representing the leadership roles of College Captain, Vice Captain and Indigenous Captain participated in a simple ceremony to replace the existing flags with new, fresh ones. These flags were then lowered to half-mast to coincide with our ANZAC Day assembly.
Thank you to the staff and students who were able to attend the ANZAC Day ceremonies held across the region at the end of the holidays. It was wonderful to have the college represented on this very significant day to remember the contribution made by the men and women of our local communities.
Last Thursday was a special day. We were able to gather together for the first time, in person, to hold a full assembly. The focus of the assembly was ANZAC Day. Mrs Erin Smith and the Yr 11 Modern History students had prepared a very thoughtful and moving presentation which helped us all to focus on the meaning of ANZAC Day.
Mr David Deacon from Tomakin RSL was our guest speaker. In his address, Mr Deacon shared an extract from the diary of PTE John Goates, a member of a Machine Gun Section, dated 28 April 1915 – 107 years to the day. The assembly was asked to reflect on the meaning of the ANZAC Spirit and how this can be lived out in our everyday, contemporary lives. Below is an extract from his address that focuses on the words purpose, responsibility and compassion which are all values we can easily relate to at Carroll College and the life and role model of Jesus himself.
We often hear the words ANZAC spirit. - What does this mean? - Did PTE Goate have the ANZAC Spirit? I believe the ANZAC Spirit stands for a number of qualities which all of us can use in our everyday lives. The ANZAC spirit represents a sense of purpose and direction. The original ANZAC's knew what they had to do - they knew of the dangers and the difficulties, but they got down and did not let those difficulties stop them from obeying their orders. The soldiers on the ground stayed until their leaders decided it was time to withdraw. You can apply this to your everyday life. You know what work you have to do at school and what jobs your parents have set you to do at home. No matter what difficulties you think are in the way - think of the ANZAC's and others who have followed in their footsteps then push the difficulties to one side and accomplish your task.
Secondly, the ANZAC spirit represents an acceptance of responsibility. Take responsibility for everything you do. It is easy to say 'I did that' or 'that's my work' when everything goes right. We all know that sometimes things do go wrong. Sometimes you do something which is against the wishes of your parents and teachers. Remember the ANZAC spirit and take responsibility for what you are doing.
The ANZAC spirit also includes a sense of compassion. This has been summed up in the Australian experience as mateship. This means to watch out for your mate, help him or her at all times. Mateship is a pillar of the Anzac legend.
So these three very simple words, Purpose, Responsibility and Compassion, are what we mean when we talk about the ANZAC spirit. You should apply these not only while you are at school, but whatever you do in your lives. If you do this, you will be keeping the faith with those original ANZAC’s who put the word ANZAC into our language and you will be helping to make sure that the ANZAC spirit is always part of life in Australia.
Excerpt from the address given by Mrs David Deacon 28 April 2022
Last Friday during the Year 11 Academic Care period students focused on the concept of volunteering. Australians are known as a nation of people who volunteer to help those around them, again following the role model of Jesus ‘helping our neighbour’ with our gifts, talents and time. All of our students are encouraged to ‘step up’, to help out and get involved in school activities and the wider community. Not only does this action help those who receive the assistance, but the students themselves gain experience and develop skills such as teamwork. All students across the school have the opportunity to get involved and Year 11 are encouraged to look at volunteerism to build skills that can be transferable to employment or will help to enhance their resumes as their school years draw to a close.
Thank you to the students who volunteered to be speakers and tour guides for our Year 7 Information evening held on Monday and those who worked hard to make the Mother’s Day breakfast such a highly successful event for our college.
Next week our Year 10 students will be attending the Love Bites program which focuses on respectful relationships. We hope that they find the program as beneficial as the Year 11 cohort recently.
Families are reminded that all students need to be wearing their winter uniforms from the beginning of Week 4 Term 2. If students are already feeling the cooler temperatures, they can change unforms before this time. We would appreciate parents checking to ensure that their child is wearing their uniform correctly before leaving home.
Please remember that parents are welcome to contact the college to raise any issues of concern for your child.

On Wednesday our Year 12 students began their Senior Retreat. This is always an anticipated event and students look forward to this opportunity to refocus at the start of their final year of secondary education.
Students and staff travelled to beautiful Jindabyne for the three day retreat. We have been staying at the Alpine Adventist Centre which is a spectacular venue. Yesterday we took the Snow Gums chairlift and then walked to the Mount Kosciusko lookout. At times we walked through falling snow and bitterly cold winds which made for an eventful journey.
The retreat program is centred around this journey “into the hill country” and draws on the story of Mary visiting Elizabeth towards the start of her pregnancy. Our students too are on an unknown journey, but our aim is to ensure they realise that they have an enormous amount of help and support along the way.
The retreat concludes today. The students have had a wonderful time relaxing, sharing viewpoints including hopes and dreams for the future and making life-long memories.
Thank you to Mrs Belle Barling for her meticulous planning and preparation of the retreat. Thank you too to the staff who gave up their time to attend the retreat and run small groups and deliver sessions: Mr Jeremy Harding, Mrs Jacqui Heffernan, Miss Lauren Herbert, Mr Paul Hill, Mrs Louise Ibbett, Mrs Anna Smart.
A Message from our Assistant Principal, Learning and Improvement
Welcome back to Term 2. I hope you had a relaxing and safe term break, and you were able to spend some quality time together with your family. We have had a busy start to Term 2.
At the assembly last week, we reflected on the ANZAC spirit and I thank our Year 11 Modern History class for preparing our ANZAC reflection. Our guest speaker, David Deacon spoke about one aspect of the ANZAC spirit - taking responsibility for our actions. It is a timely reminder for our students at the start of a new term. Five minutes before Homeroom, Period 3 and Period 5, music is played over the school PA. This is a cue for our students to go to their locker and bathroom or end their sports game to move to class. Students also need to be prepared for each lesson. This includes having their books, writing equipment and their device charged.
If students are absent from school, I remind them to check their Google Classroom page to catch up on work missed. This term teachers are writing Years 7 to 11 reports. They will complete course outcome grades. This specifies what students know and have shown in their learning through formal and informal assessment tasks. Teachers will also complete the Learning Habits outcomes for Years 7 to 10. A three-point scale (Consistently, Sometimes, Rarely) will be used to indicate achievement in this area. These include:
- Brings all the correct equipment, books, uniform and technology to complete tasks
- Manages time effectively
- Collaborates positively
- Works independently when required
- Completes and submits required work on time
- Seeks clarification or assistance when needed
- Contributes to a positive learning environment.
We finished last week with our annual Cross Country. We were blessed with beautiful weather and it was wonderful to see our students cheering each other on. Congratulations to Chisholm House on winning the carnival! Good luck to all our students competing at the Archdiocese Cross Country Carnival on Monday 9 May.
Year 8 “Have a Go” day
On Wednesday 18 May, Year 8 students will participate in their ‘Have a Go’ day. This day is designed to help Year 8 students know what electives they can select in Year 9 beyond the Year 7 and 8 core classes. Students will experience a lesson in Drama, PASS, Commerce, Agriculture and Design and Technology. We look forward to a fun and exciting day with Year 8 students.
This term Year 10 students will receive information on selecting their senior courses for 2023. We have many sessions coming up to help our students choose their courses and present what courses the College offers. Please see the attached flyer outlining these sessions and dates.

Entries for the annual Mayor's Writing Competition are now open
The annual Mayor’s Writing Competition aims to encourage young people who live or go to school in Eurobodalla to get writing.
Each year, young authors between the ages of five and 18 are invited to submit an original work. Entrants can submit a short story, essay, poem, or any style of creative writing as long as the writing adheres to word limits set out in the terms and conditions.
Each year we receive a flood of entries in the form of short stories, poems and essays. To select the prize-winning entries from hundreds of submissions, the judges award the most imaginative and unique plots.
2022 theme: Magic
This year a theme has been selected to provide some extra inspiration. Chosen by Mayor Matthew Hatcher, the word 'magic' needs to be incorporated somewhere in your story.

Soccer - Bill Turner Cup
On Tuesday, Carroll College was the home team in Round 2 of the Bill Turner Cup against Monaro High School (Cooma), played at Captain Oldrey Park Broulee.
In unusually hot conditions, the Carroll team took the lead from early in the first half and found themselves in front at halftime with a score of 7-nil.
The whole team showed great skills and sportsmanship throughout the game and pushed through with no subs for a 10 nil victory over their opponents.
They now progress to Round 3 against Moruya High school, which will take place after NAPLAN.
CARROLL COLLEGE lead goal scorers, Tyler Cooper – 6, Hugh Wignell – 1, Max Colbourne – 2, Jake Sullivan – 1.
A big thank you to Eurobodalla Referee Gary Megay and Broulee Football Club’s Andy and Kim Samsa for field set up! Thank you also to Monaro High school for making the trip.

National Careers Week will be celebrated in Term 2. The official date is week 4, 16th - 20th May.
To celebrate careers and the role they have in our and our young people's lives, the following is planned: in addition to the careers counselling sessions, both group and individual, that have been occurring during class time:
- Weekly Career Ponder Videos/ Discussion points - ranging from 1 to 5 minutes and are aimed at all age groups. They are designed to get students to think about an aspect of career planning which can be practised at school. For example, the first week is about Goal setting; week 2 is about Who am I. Students can access these videos through the Sentral portal each week during homeroom.
- Year 11 (16 May) and Year 8 (17 May) students will undertake a Future Me day with UOW on the College Campus. Students will attend a session within their school day with some students from their house group. The student's specific session time will be posted on Sentral daily notices on the program day. Students will return to their regular classes on the day when they are not attending this session. There is no cost for this activity.
- Year 10 will attend Batemans Bay Day campus on 7 June followed by an Excursion to Bega for a South Coast Careers Expo on 17 May. These activities give students the opportunity to engage with tertiary providers and industry representatives regarding pathways and careers both locally and further afield.
- Year 12 UOW discovery day is on 9 June for the registered Year 12 students.
- Senior students are having a variety of pathway presentations made available to them during their Academic Care lessons, such as UAC, ACU, UC, and Police Recruitment.
Career Counselling sessions, both individually and in groups, are continuing to be run during class time for students to assist them with their pathway and transition plans. Students are encouraged to continually check the Carroll Careers Facebook page, Sentral, and their school emails to access opportunities. I look forward to a wonderful term in the careers space with students.
Kind Regards

Monday - Tuesday (Trinity Catholic College, Goulburn) / Wednesday - Friday (Carroll College, Broulee)
Term 2 fee statements were emailed on 6 May with a due date of Friday 27 May. Thank you to families who have made payments. Any recent payments will be receipted shortly. All families are emailed a fee statement including those who make regular payments. This provides information on where your account and fees are to the dates indicated and provides the opportunity to check your account.
Any families currently who have submitted a Fee Concession Application, your application process is currently underway.
Families assessed as having the capacity to pay fees are expected to pay their fees. Where families demonstrate an unwillingness to pay fees, the College will recover fees and this may involve referral to a debt collection agency. Additional costs incurred in the collection of fees are the responsibility of the debtor/parent/guardian.
Managing your Fees
The College recommends a regular payment approach to managing your school fees and to reduce the financial burden that delaying fee payments may cause. For example, a regular weekly or fortnightly payment through Direct Debit, BPay or Qkr! can assist in managing your school fees. The 2022 Fee Schedule is available on the Carroll College website – Enrolment/Fees. In this section of the website, there is also a Fee Calculator to assist families in determining fee payment amounts in managing their school fee payments. If you are unable to pay off your school fees in full by the end of the year, you will need to setup a Fee Agreement with the College. A fee agreement assists both the College and families in managing school fees. Please contact our finance team via finance.ccb@cg.catholic.edu.au to obtain Fee Agreement Form.
Covid-19 Fee Relief
Catholic Education and Carroll College are able to offer Covid-19 fee relief during Term 2, 2022. Covid-19 fee relief must be applied for during Term 2. Retrospective Covid relief is not available. Please request a Fee Concession application and a Covid-19 Fee Request form via email to Rhonda.Forner@cg.catholic.edu.au Supporting documentation is also required with your application.
Fee Assistance – Concession Application
Currently enrolled families facing significant financial difficulty are able to apply for fee assistance. Fee assistance is income based and requires supporting documentation. You may be asked to meet to discuss aspects of your application and will be required to provide supporting documentation. Fee assistance can include:
- a payment plan (extends the payment period to 12 months and commits families to make ongoing payments to pay off school fees by the end of the school year)
- an extended payment plan (extends the payment period to greater than 12 months and commits families to make ongoing payments to pay off school fees over an approved, extended period of time)
- Fee Concession – partial reduction of fees and payment plan
- Fee Concession – full reduction of fees
Fee assistance is an annual application process based on your circumstances. In some situations, any reductions may be reviewed on a term by term basis, which would then require separate applications including supporting documentation at the start of each term. Where your circumstances improve during the school year, the College relies on families to get in touch, so that your fee assistance can be adjusted accordingly and the College is able to provide support to other families requiring assistance.
Government grants provide part of the funding required to operate the College. The balance of operating costs are funded through school fees. The ongoing operations of the College are dependent on parents paying the required level of fees. Every effort will be made by the College to recover fees from parents who are deemed to have the capacity to pay fees.
On the basis of the information provided in the Fee Assistance Form, the Fee Committee will determine an appropriate level of fee support based upon guidelines agreed to by Catholic Education Archdiocese of Canberra and Goulburn and Carroll College. The Fee Committee reviews fee assistance applications once per term, in the latter half of the term. Applicants will be then be advised of the outcome via email and letter. Please sign a copy of this letter and return via the envelope provided to the College. Following receipt of signed agreement letter, the concession will then be applied to your fees. Where you are granted a partial reduction in school fees with a payment plan, it is necessary that you commit to maintaining your payment plan. Where you are on a payment plan or extended payment plan, it is important to maintain those ongoing payments. If you need to change your payment plan arrangements, please get in touch with College as soon as practicable.
Change in Circumstances – Request for Split Billing
Where there has been a change to your family circumstances and you require split billing, this creates a variation to your school fee obligations from initial enrolment. Please request the Split Billing Request Form which needs to be signed and dated by both parents/guardians to take effect. Separate forms can be provided to each parent. This form requires parents to indicate the percentage split for fees and acknowledges your obligations relating to fees, levies and charges incurred while your child is enrolled at the College. Please contact our finance team via finance.ccb@cg.catholic.edu.au to obtain a Split Billing Request Form.
All information is treated and maintained confidentially.
If you require fee assistance, please contact Rhonda Forner, Business Manager by email at Rhonda.Forner@cg.catholic.edu.au
