Staffing Update
Mrs Veronica Harrold-Carter returns to work next term following her injury. I am pleased to report that Veronica is recovering well and is looking forward to being back at work. I take this opportunity to thank Ms Lizette Richards for her leadership in the role of Xavier Pastoral Coordinator. Ms Richards has been a wonderful asset to the pastoral team bringing a high level of teaching experience to the position.
Mr Greg McAteer is taking leave for the first two weeks of Term 4. I congratulate Mrs Corrinne Dell on her successful appointment to the role of Mackillop Pastoral Coordinator (Acting) in Mr McAteer’s absence.
We welcome Mr Jason Szkwarek to the teaching staff next term. Mr Szkwarek comes to us from Lavalla Catholic College Traralgon, Victoria. Mr Szkwarek has held the position of Product Design and Technology/VET Building Teacher/Victorian Certified of Applied Learning (VCAL) Learning Leader/Trades Skills Centre Manager.
Mr Szkwarek is a highly motivated and passionate educator with a proven ability to foster strong relationships with students and parents. He has extensive knowledge and experience in Inquiry-based, Project-based Learning and an understanding of UbD methodology, and Product Design and Technology Method. He has industry skills in Building and Construction, Cabinet and Furniture Making and Manufacturing, and advanced skills in Information Communications Technology.
Uniform Proposals
For some time, the students have been commenting on our sports shorts and the restrictive nature of the fabric. We are currently looking into a new design to allow for greater comfort and suitability.
In years past, the Senior Leadership Team members have had access to College blazers to wear for special events. These have not been an attractive addition to our school uniform, as they have not complemented our College colours in design or structure. We are hoping to introduce a new tailored designed Carroll College blazer for Years 11 & 12 students (optional). This will distinguish our senior students from Years 7-10, making this uniform item a special feature of the senior uniform. No decisions will be made until designs are presented to the Community Council for approval. We would like to remove the ‘bomber’ jacket from the Year 12 uniform. The quality, design and weight of this item is not ideal. I know the students are keen to have their name appear somewhere on their senior uniform when they reach Year 12. This idea is currently being considered and could possibly be added to the Canterbury jersey that is so popular among students. New supplies are being ordered to coincide with our 25th College Anniversary.
Pupil Free Day
Please keep in mind that school resumes for all students on Monday 14 October for Term 4. The Pupil Free day for Term 4 is Friday 18 October (end of Week 1).

Bus Safety
Mrs Heffernan and I met this week with Marshall’s Buses about new regulations for school transport. Part of the new regulations regards seatbelts, provisions for bus stops and safety education. Ensuring students arrive and return from school safely each day is our highest priority and below is some information which will allow this to continue at the College.
Seatbelts are required to be worn on all school buses where fitted. Thank you to all those students who are complying with this requirement. Could all parents please discuss with their child the importance of complying with this legislation.
Below are some tips on Bus safety for school students from NSW Department of Transport on how we can help keep our kids safe.
Getting to and from the bus stop
- Families are responsible for getting their child to and from the bus stop safely.
- Always supervise your child until they are at least 10 and hold their hand when walking to and from the bus stop or interchange and when crossing the road.
- When waiting for the bus, hold hands and wait as far back from the passing traffic as possible.
Getting off the bus
When travelling by bus, your child is most at risk in the minutes after they get off the bus.
Meet your child AT the bus stop or interchange after school. NEVER wait on the opposite side of the road and call them across. If you cannot meet your child, organise for a trusted adult to take your place.
Always wait until the bus has gone, then use a safe place to cross.
Talk with your child about what to do:
- if you are delayed and cannot meet them as usual
- If they catch the wrong bus
- If they get off the bus at the wrong bus stop.
Crossing the road
Together, choose the safest place to cross the road and talk about:
STOP! one step back from the kerb
LOOK! continuously both ways
LISTEN! for the sounds of approaching traffic
THINK! whether it is safe to cross
Driving near buses
Bus lights flash on the front and back of a bus when the bus is picking up or setting down school children. A 40km/h speed limit applies when bus lights flash. The speed limit is for all traffic travelling in the same direction as the bus, whether the bus is stationary or moving.
Informal school bus stops
Informal bus stops are not signposted and are usually found in rural areas. They may be at the front of a property or on the side of the road.
Drivers may find it difficult to see children at informal bus stops. Families should take special care when using these stops. Staying on the bus a bit longer to travel to another bus stop may reduce the need for your child to have to cross the road.
For more information on selecting or reviewing informal bus stops please visit:

Year 12
Our Year 12 students have now concluded at the College, on behalf of the Pastoral Team I wish them the very best for their future endeavours. The current group of students have been a pleasure to work with during their time at the College and the Senior Leaders have left many good practices that future leaders can adopt in the future.
Enjoy a safe and relaxing break and we look forward to seeing you back on Monday 14 October.

Year 12 have now officially finished their time at Carroll College. After 13 years of schooling, it now comes down to their final exams next term. We wish them well in their final preparations and exams. Our Year 12 teachers are available via email or face to face next term if students need to check any final details. All students are invited to join their teachers and other staff for a final farewell breakfast on December 18th between 7.30 and 9 am in the new staff centre.
Next term we are going to run a Homework Centre for Years 7-10 in the leadup to their end of year exams. The centre will operate in the Hub for an hour after school every Thursday. Staff have volunteered their time to make themselves available, so please utilise them. Students can get help in any area, or even help in how to go about studying. Parents will need to organise to pick their child up at the conclusion of the sessions, at 4.20 pm. Year 10 exams start in Week 4 and 7-9 exams in Week 5.
Year 11 students have now finished their Preliminary HSC year and will officially start their HSC studies next term. The NESA requirements for patterns of study in Year 12 are slightly different from those in Year 11. Students need to only study 10 Units in the HSC year. This means that the majority of students MAY drop a 2 unit course for year 12 (they do not need to). If they wish to get an ATAR the students will need to ensure they are studying;
- at least six units from Board Developed Courses;
- at least two units of a Board Developed Course in English;
- at least three courses of two units value or greater (either Board Developed or Board Endorsed Courses); and
- at least four subjects.
Students need to be aware that they can only count ONE VET course in their ATAR calculations, but not Sports Coaching(as it is a non-ATAR course), if they want an ATAR. Students will be spoken to in the first week of Term 4 about how to drop a course. Students will need a parent to sign off any changes.
Again we wish our Year 12 students all the best as they prepare for their final exams.

Assistant Principal/Curriculum and Achievement

In week 8 Michelle Katuke, Catherine Davis, Charlotte Nicoletti and Nathan Mansfield joined educators from around the state at the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Catholic Education NSW State Conference in Cessnock. The conference took place over two days and during this time staff had the privilege of listening to guest speakers such as Dr Anita Heiss, Kurt Fearnley, Dr Jeff McMullen and Sarah Kastelic.
Staff also participated in a range of workshops where they learned about leadership, mindfulness, connecting with country, painting, spirituality and caring for children in out of home care. Some of the key issues to come out of the conference were embedding Indigenous culture in the classroom and fostering strong connections to community. Staff were able to engage with educators from other parts of the state and discuss current school practice and how to build on this for the future.
Next term sees the conclusion to our Gurumbangma Indigenous Mentoring program with the last day being held on Tuesday 29th of October. This will be a fun day for all of the Years 5 and 6 students who have participated.
Finally, we wish our graduating year 12 students: Tayliah Andy, Luke Campbell, Nelson Leslight, Harry Owens, Jonah Slockee-Albert and Klaye Van Weerdenburg all the best for the future and thank them for their contributions to our programs. We would also like to especially thank Jonah for his outstanding leadership over the past two years. We will miss you all!
An Open Letter to my Year 12 English Class
The two year journey with you is almost over. It is a truism that teachers are rarely shy about offering wise sayings, even platitudes when Year 12 leave, but I want to take his opportunity to reflect on our time together in good old C3 and D4.
Your graduation mass and formal are rapidly approaching. Suits and gowns have been selected, music, photos and final memories of your six years at Carroll College. Treasure this last week together. You’ll find that friends come in and out of our lives like waiters in a restaurant. There is a saying that you have a friend for a reason, for a season or for life. You will find that to be true. There will be future reunions but as a whole group, this may be the last chance for connection. Seize it!
You may never have to analyse, discuss or de-construct a piece of literature ever again but I sincerely hope you continue to read books. Good books. They are the cheapest passports available and will take you to places you may never visit. They will be good friends- non-judgemental and like any bestie, they will challenge your existing values and views or will encourage you to look at the world in a different way. Good films serve that purpose too. Sit in a darkened cinema and let the visual artistry work its magic.
What the future holds is a mystery to us all. One thing for sure is that there will be joyous highs and dolorous lows. It’s how you handle life that will define you. Henry David Thoreau in his essay “Walden”, wrote that “most people live lives of quiet desperation”. I do not want that for you. I was about your age when I saw graffiti in a Sydney railway subway that read “Consume, be silent and die!” It was a warning about focusing on the money and possessions. Teaching has provided me rewards that I would not swap for ANY higher paying job. Choose a career, profession, vocation that you are passionate about. If you jump out of bed each morning eager for the challenge of the day, you’ll know you’ve chosen well.
And as for happiness? Well, maybe it is enough to realise that it is ephemeral and beautiful. Just like sadness. I write in a journal each day to “pass the world along”. Find a means of self-expression that celebrates life and the things for which you should be grateful. Good health, happy relationships. It works for me. A modest bungalow in a lovely street in a beautiful coastal town. Remember that your HSC English mark is only one measure of success. Way leads on to way and maybe the path less travelled is for you.
Where will you end up? Well, whether it is a busker at circular Quay, a Bell’s carnival worker, a stone fruit grower from Braidwood, teacher or academic, remember that any work has nobility if you have your heart and soul in it.
So many memories since Year 7. Good times of banter and laughter between the serious academic studies and the ubiquitous essays. Each time Year 12 leave, I think of the journey.
And finally, think about your catholic education based on the ideals that we should: “Do all the good you can, by all the means you can, in all the ways you can, in all the places you can, at all the times you can, to all the people you can, as long as ever you can.” (John Wesley)
May all your storms be weathered and all that’s good get better. Here’s to life, here’s to love, and here’s to you.
God bless you all,
Mr. Cullen
Classroom Teacher
In Year 8 HSIE, we have spent the term studying Place and Liveability. We learnt about the factors that make a place liveable versus not liveable. We also learnt about Megacities that can be seen from outer space and how they are buzzing with energy, are overcrowded and polluted with people drowning in their own excess.
We also had the opportunity to watch the movie 2040. The movie had lots of important information on regeneration. The movie starred Damon Gameau and his adventure around the world to find ways and explore what the future would look like in 2040. Gameau looked at the best elements and solutions for regeneration that already available to us. He documented what the world could look like if we embraced these solutions to improve the planet and move them into the mainstream. The movie shows what we could have if the world was healthy and happy.
Damon Gameau set out to show his 4-year-old daughter what her future could look like. However, the movie is not only aimed towards the younger generation, but the older one too. The movie demonstrates the reality that if we all put in the effort, we can change the world.
Throughout the movie, he located unique ways from around the world to help sustainability and avoid excess strain on the planet, and best of all these concepts already exist. One of the things he found was a solar-powered battery. Families in poor countries could power their houses and store additional energy. Then these families has a choice to sell their excess power or even gift it. It was environmentally friendly and used natural power. The movie went on to explain how this concept could be implemented in the near future. Overall, the movie revealed a future of hope and regeneration that we all need to work toward.
