Year 8 HSIE

In Year 8 HSIE, we have spent the term studying Place and Liveability. We learnt about the factors that make a place liveable versus not liveable. We also learnt about Megacities that can be seen from outer space and how they are buzzing with energy, are overcrowded and polluted with people drowning in their own excess.

We also had the opportunity to watch the movie 2040. The movie had lots of important information on regeneration. The movie starred Damon Gameau and his adventure around the world to find ways and explore what the future would look like in 2040. Gameau looked at the best elements and solutions for regeneration that already available to us. He documented what the world could look like if we embraced these solutions to improve the planet and move them into the mainstream. The movie shows what we could have if the world was healthy and happy.

Damon Gameau set out to show his 4-year-old daughter what her future could look like. However, the movie is not only aimed towards the younger generation, but the older one too. The movie demonstrates the reality that if we all put in the effort, we can change the world.

Throughout the movie, he located unique ways from around the world to help sustainability and avoid excess strain on the planet, and best of all these concepts already exist. One of the things he found was a solar-powered battery. Families in poor countries could power their houses and store additional energy. Then these families has a choice to sell their excess power or even gift it. It was environmentally friendly and used natural power. The movie went on to explain how this concept could be implemented in the near future. Overall, the movie revealed a future of hope and regeneration that we all need to work toward.
