EASTER PRAYER
O God of the Last Supper
God of the Cross
And God of the Empty Tomb
We come before you now and we pause.
Holy Week has passed.
But how we long to live by
the marvellous story we have heard.
Let us remain ever beside you at the table of the Last Supper.
Show us who is hungry.
And give us the courage to offer them bread from your table.
Show us who is thirsty.
And give us the strength to lift up the cup of your love.
Most of all, show us how to linger at the table, serving others
Doing ALL that we do
In remembrance of You,
And the way You were when You walked this earth.
We lift these simple, limited words
Up to you, O God. Amen
BE THAT TEACHER CAMPAIGN
Congratulations to Mrs Erica Drewsen who was nominated and has featured in the Teacher Gallery for the ‘Be That Teacher’ Campaign.
“Many of us have that one teacher we remember. The teacher who helped us to learn and grow, who gave us the confidence to explore and master new talents and skills. The teacher who encouraged us to strive for more and helped us reach our potential.
Be That Teacher is a joint Australian, state and territory government initiative which aims to showcase the value and importance of teachers and encourages Australians to consider a career in teaching.” https://www.bethatteacher.gov.au/
This is wonderful recognition of Mrs Drewsen’s passion for education and the expertise she brings to her role. She is an inspiration to all aspiring teachers!

CATALYST
Our Catalyst journey this year continues to focus on High Impact Teaching Practice (HITP), which is based on the Science of Learning and Barak Rosenshine’s 10 Principles of Instruction. Aligned to our system priorities, we have set out to meet a bold goal that HITP is visible in every classroom. We know an evidence-based approach to teaching provides the best environment to impact student learning.
ANNUAL IMPROVEMENT PLAN
Our 2024 Annual Improvement Plan focuses on three goals.
Goal 1: Improve student achievement in Reading through the implementation of explicit teaching
using evidence-based practices.
Goal 2: Promote Teacher Efficacy using High Impact Teaching Practices
Goal 3: Enhance school culture through explicitly teaching an engaging behaviour curriculum
ANZAC DAY
I invite all students to participate in ANZAC Day services across the region. ANZAC Day falls in the second week of the school holidays on Thursday 25 April. Carroll College will be represented at eight locations from Batemans Bay to Narooma. Students are asked to present in full summer uniform. Specific details outlining meeting times, location and staff contacts for each venue will be forwarded to families before the end of next week.
I congratulate all students on the way they have engaged in their learning this term. Classroom Mastery has created consistently productive, safe and calm classroom environments and it is wonderful to see students responding to the new routines and expectations and seeing the benefits.
This will be the final newsletter for Term 1.
Our final day of term is next Friday, 12 April.
School resumes for Term 2 for all students on Tuesday 30 April. I wish all families a safe and enjoyable holiday.
With respect and encouragement to you.

Year 6 STEM Enrichment – Rocketman
Year 6 students from St Bernard’s and St Mary’s Primary schools have been engaging in a STEM enrichment program this term at Carroll College. “Rocketman” Bottle Rocket project has been developed by the college to provide an insight into Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.
The STEM enrichment initiative is a great way to demonstrate the different aspects of the STEM process leading to the development of an innovative solution to a aerodynamics problem. Students engaged in three lessons that focused on Design, Construct and Test.
Today was the culmination of three days (test day) of enrichment and as a result, the students were to successfully launch their rocket designs at Carroll College. Congratulations to all our students for their amazing rocket designs. This program will continue next term with a new group of students from both the primary schools.
Maximising Your Study Efficiency: The 80-20 Rule
Are you tired of spending countless hours on assignments only to realise that much of that time was wasted on unnecessary tasks? It's time to work smarter, not harder, and the key lies in understanding the 80-20 rule.
The 80-20 rule, also known as the Pareto Principle, suggests that 80% of results come from just 20% of efforts. How can you apply this principle to your studies? Let's break it down.
- Choose the Right Goal: Before diving into any task, it's crucial to identify your goal. Ask yourself: What do I want to achieve with this assignment? Focus on the 20% of goals that will yield 80% of the desired results. For instance, if your goal is to write a persuasive essay, identify the key points or arguments that will make the most impact.
- Choose the Right Task: Not all tasks are created equal. Some tasks contribute significantly more to your goals than others. Prioritise tasks based on their importance and relevance to your objectives. If research is consuming too much of your time, consider focusing on the essential sources and information that directly support your main arguments.
- Choose the Right Action or Strategy: Once you've established your goals and tasks, it's time to determine the most effective actions or strategies to achieve them. Break down your tasks into actionable steps and concentrate on the 20% of actions that will generate 80% of your desired outcomes. For example, if you're studying for an exam, identify the key concepts or topics that are likely to appear and allocate more time to mastering them.
Remember, every task consists of three components: the destination (goal), the route (plan), and the action (steps). By focusing on the critical 20% of each component, you can optimise your study approach for maximum efficiency and results.
In your academic journey, prioritise activities that align with your goals and contribute the most to your success. By adopting the 80-20 mindset, you'll not only save time but also achieve better outcomes with less effort.
So, the next time you embark on a study session or tackle an assignment, think about the 80-20 method of working smarter, not harder. Identify the tasks and actions that truly matter, and focus on these.
Year 12 Reports

Assistant Principal’s Network meeting
Last Friday I attended the first Assistant Principal’s Network meeting for 2024 held in Canberra. Having the opportunity to meet with colleagues from schools across the Archdiocese and to hear presentations of highly relevant material is always important.
For this meeting the focus areas included;
- Spiritus opportunity - Sharing the highlights of participants' journey in 2023.
- Leadership updates and information from Dr Tony Bracken, Deputy Director.
- Microsoft in my school- a demonstration and showcase of how our top-tier Microsoft Education license can be used effectively to support and enhance teaching and learning.
- Child Safety and the role of the Child Safe Advocate in your schools.
- NESA Audits – NSW schools.
- Leadership development for Assistant Principals.
Week 10 College Assembly
During our assembly this week, the focus of my address was entitled ‘Child Safety at Carroll College’. The information shared focused on Carroll College as a school that embraces a strong commitment to child safety for all our students and the role everyone plays in this. Students were encouraged to think about what they would do if they ever felt unsafe and to clearly identify the staff they could reach out to for help. Student voice is a feature of our college and through the commissioning of the new Student Representative Council which occurred during this assembly, we now have year-level representatives that can help to voice the ideas, needs, and wants of the entire student body. Congratulations to these new SRC members.

Uniform
As Term One is ending the holidays are a good time to start thinking about locating, lengthening, or buying the winter uniform. During Term Two, students will be required to change over to their winter uniform which will be needed as the days get cooler and shorter. We usually make this transition to winter uniform around Week 4 of Term 2. This date will be communicated well ahead of time. Students are reminded that hoodies and long-sleeved skivvies under shirts and dresses are not part of the College uniform. If an extra layer of warmth is needed, then students can wear the college jersey or jumper. For more warmth the black college jacket is available, as well as the more formal college blazer. Uniform items are available from the College uniform shop, Lowes, and Stitches at Batemans Bay.
To assist students and parents you can find our uniform expectations in the link below

Last week marked the end of the College’s Project Compassion fundraising appeal. Thank you so much for the many generous donations and contributions you have made. As a College, we managed to raise well over one thousand dollars for Caritas. This will go directly towards ending poverty, promoting justice, and upholding the dignity of thousands of individuals and communities across the world. Once we are aware of the full amount raised, we will post this on the College’s Facebook page.
On Holy Thursday, the school community was able to participate in an Easter Reflection, led by our Youth Ministry Group and Social Justice Captains. Students were invited to reflect on the Easter themes of despair and hope, love and hate, despair and betrayal, and endings and new beginnings through a contemporary TikTok style presentation. These Easter themes were explored through current affairs and popular culture.
The issues raised included the conflict in Gaza, the Russian occupation of Ukraine, the rift and reconciliation between Taylor Swift and Katy Perry, and the ball tampering cricket scandal involving Steve Smith and his eventual comeback. The Youth Ministry Group thought it would be important to include relevant popular culture identities to make this reflection relevant to them. TikTok clips and images were then surrounded by “comments” which students read out from backstage.
The comments acted as a dialogue discussing and debating these themes. They were then linked to Jesus’ teachings, and modelled hope, forgiveness, love and new beginnings. To bring it all together, a written reflection on each theme was read by one of our Social Justice Captains.
Thank you so much to Mrs Barling for creating this concept and to the Youth Ministry Group and the Social Justice Captains for bringing it to life.
I hope you all had a joyful Easter break. I particularly hope that you were able to find the time to relax with your family and friends, as those times are becoming so rare in our busy lives!

Progressive Achievement Tests (PAT)
During Weeks 2 and 3 next term, all students in Years 7 to 10 will be involved in completing the online Progressive Achievement Tests (PAT).
Students will be completing the following two tests:
- PAT-R (Reading)

The PAT assessments provide objective, norm-referenced information to teachers about their students’ skills and understandings in a range of key areas. Each PAT has its own proficiency scale with descriptors outlining the content and skills students are consolidating at any given point on that scale. Each PAT assessment provides data on student performance, making PAT ideal for understanding students’ current strengths and weaknesses, informing teaching and learning, and monitoring progress over time. The tests are online, multiple-choice and each test will take approximately 40 minutes.
A copy of the test schedule is attached below and will be available in Sentral daily notices. We encourage all students to do their best during these tests as the data will be used by their class teachers throughout the year.

Hi, I’m Evie, one of your Chisholm Captains!
I applied for Chisholm Captain because I was determined to encourage more of the students to get more involved with their House. I understand that not everyone's strength is in sports, that is why as a House captain I wanted to create different ways for everyone to be able to get involved and lift the house spirit!
My overall goal is to create an inclusive and positive environment in the Chisholm House, and across the college for all students, no matter their ability, so they can enjoy themselves. Here are a few fun facts about me:
My sport is surfing…
Since I love the ocean my favourite colour is blue.
My favourite show at the moment would be Modern Family. I'm currently rewatching it!
And I generally spend most of my time at the beach.
Hey, I’m Shelby, one of your Chisholm Captains! (The best house if I do say so myself)
As a member of the SLT, I aim to be a positive and approachable senior student for the younger years to come to for support or simply for a chat! I applied for this role to create more school spirit across the college and to promote initiatives that would include every member of the school community.
We may only have another 5 months as the leaders of the school, but in this time the other members of the SLT and I are coming up with fun ideas which will leave our legacy as the senior students of the school.
One of my biggest goals as House Captain is to continue Chisholm's winning streak. For the past 4 years, we have won the triple crown, coming 1st in all three sporting carnivals. So far we have dominated the swimming carnival and I hope we can keep this winning streak alive for the rest of 2024. It's not all about sporting ability, but showing up, participating and house spirit is how we have continued to win! You can normally find me sitting outside D block at break times, dodging the constant balls flying at us from the soccer and footy games… Here are some fun facts about me:
- I do competitive cheerleading where I am a flyer.
- My favourite colour is sage green
- I am terrified… and I mean terrified of bees and wasps
- My dream holiday is either Hawaii or the Maldives
- I enjoy Biology and Chemistry and want to study Medical Science after school.
- And yes… I was the person stuck in a moon boot for the first 5 weeks of term.

On 14 March, Year 7 Maths classes enjoyed the annual Pi day activities. In class, they measured diameters and circumferences to ‘discover’ the relationship Pi has to circle calculations.
Students recited as many digits of Pi as they could. The overall winner this year was Parker Whiteman with 53 correct digits. Runners-up were Lucy Jeffress, Darcy Fitzpatrick and Ella Scales. Students also enjoyed a pie snack.

As the term comes to an end it is wonderful to look back on all the amazing things the students have been able to achieve in TAS.
Students have enjoyed making and decorating cakes, cooking a variety of dishes, planting seeds at the ag farm for Autumn crops and creating beautiful projects out of timber.
I look forward to sharing more from the TAS classes next term.

Students enjoyed a great day in Tuggeranong on Tuesday 26 March with our 6 teams representing the College with pride, fair play and a great deal of enthusiasm!
We may not have come home with trophies this time around but to see the excitement and team spirit from all was great.
A huge thank you goes to all of the staff for their hard work, having volunteered to train the teams over several morning break times and to accompany them and coach on the day.

It was a cold, windy and rainy day in Goulburn for the Archdiocesan Tennis Championships for 2024. Both our Girls and Boys teams were early and we were able to have a quick warm-up to prepare for the day before the rain hit.
Our Girl's team of Georgia Lovegrove, Pypar McCarthy, Arielle Brantingham and Bonnie Dalgleish started the day well with a solid 5 sets to 1 win over Lumen Christi Catholic College, Pambula. Pypar McCarthy had a strong 6-0 victory. It was a flawless set of tennis considering the conditions.
The Boys then played Lumen Christi and came away with a 6 sets to 0 victory. Max Colbourne came away with a convincing 6-0 victory against a solid opponent. Round 2 was against Trinity Catholic College Goulburn. The Boy's team was again too strong and won 6 sets to 0, dropping only 13 games. Henry Allen and Will Lovegrove played great doubles winning their set 6-2.
The Girl's match against Trinity was even more convincing. They won 6 sets to 0 and only dropped 2 games in those six sets. Bonnie Dalgleish and Arielle Brantingham combined exceptionally well and won their set 6-0.
Both teams played some great tennis and were well-deserved winners of both events. Their commitment, team spirit and overall presentation were to be admired. They did themselves and the College proud.
Carroll College now advances to the CCC State Tennis Championships to be held in Bathurst next term on Monday 3rd June 2024.
Well done to the following students:
Max Colbourne, Joshua Nguyen, Henry Allen and Will Lovegrove
Georgia Lovegrove, Pypar McCarthy, Arielle Brantingham and Bonnie Dalgleish
