Come Holy Spirit of Pentecost!
Come Holy Spirit of the Great South Land! Give us the grace to see your face in one another and to recognise Jesus, our companion on the road. Give us the courage to tell our stories and to speak boldly of your truth. Give us ears to listen humbly to each other and a discerning heart to hear what you are saying. Lead your Church into a Hope filled future, that we may live the joy of the Gospel. Through Jesus Christ our Lord, bread for the journey, from age to age, Amen.
Dear Parents, Students and Friends
Last Sunday, the Catholic Church celebrated the Feast of Pentecost. Pentecost is a Christian holy day that celebrates the coming of the Holy Spirit 40 days after Easter. Just as the apostles in Jesus’ time experienced the presence of the Holy Spirit, the Sacrament of Confirmation confers the gifts of the Holy Spirit to those who wish to be confirmed. Today we call these people candidates. On 19 & 20 June, the Sacrament of Confirmation will be held for candidates in our two Catholic feeder schools. Helping these students to prepare for this Sacrament is our Year 10 CSYMA (Catholic Schools’ Youth Ministry Australia) class. They are currently preparing to facilitate a retreat day on 4 June at the College for students from St Bernard’s and St Mary’s as well as students from Public schools wishing to receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit. They will be assisted by our Youth Minister Liarna Miller and our Faith Formation Coordinator Belle Barling.
National Reconciliation Week
Today marks the start of National Reconciliation Week. The College celebrated National Sorry Day on Wednesday. Each member of our school community created a ‘Sorry Hand’ which outlined their individual commitment to Reconciliation in our nation. Each of the hands were planted in the ground to connect us to the country in which we learn and play.
frequent responses during a lesson learn more than students who are passive observers. Students learn new ideas in relation to ideas they already know. Daily Review is a critical teaching strategy for moving information to long-term memory, which reduces the burden on working memory. (Teach Well, 2021)
Last week, the HITP In Action team (11 teachers) attended professional learning in Canberra. High impact teaching practices have been the focus in classrooms for these leaders. Strategies for Effective Instruction come from research by Barak Rosenshine. The 17 Principles appear logical in the teaching and learning space. However, it is the implementation of these strategies that require intentional focus to execute effectively when fully engaging the learner.
Mrs Erica Drewsen is part of our HITP In Action team. She writes:
I have found the Catalyst training to be highly motivating and engaging. Often as teachers we attend Professional Learning that we think is worthwhile but we cannot see it in action and so we can fall into our usual patterns of teaching. Catalyst, however, has provided us all with an excellent framework and specific examples of what our lessons can, and should, include in order to increase our impact in the classroom. I have appreciated and gained enormously from the professional conversations and sharing that is stemming from the program. I have begun to use HITP in classrooms from Year 7 to Year 12 and students have responded very positively to the practices. I am learning new strategies and techniques that are truly effective. It is very exciting!
‘Tell Them From Me’ School Surveys
This week, Catholic Education has launched the 'Tell Them From Me' Survey, a new school improvement survey for staff, students and parents. The surveys are an important part of our whole school evaluation and planning process. Yesterday, all families received an invitation to complete the Tell Them From Me (TTFM) Partners in Learning survey. As we highly value the role of parents and carers within our school community, we would greatly appreciate your feedback. The information you provide will be used to maintain our commitment to working together in partnership to further improve student learning and wellbeing at Carroll College.
Year 7 2022 Interviews
I am delighted that interviews have commenced with families of Year 6 children wishing to enrol at Carroll College in 2022. This is an exciting time! Please encourage family and friends to lodge their child’s application so I can meet with them shortly. It is an important decision when choosing a secondary school. I am very happy to meet with any family, even if they are undecided at this stage in the year. It is wise to make an informed decision and visit schools. Often first impressions are lasting. A positive school culture is almost tangible.
Walawaani njindiwan
We acknowledge the Walbunja people of the Yuin nation, the traditional custodians of the land, where the Aboriginal people have performed age-old ceremonies of storytelling, music, dance and celebration.
We acknowledge and pay our respects to the Elders past and present, and we acknowledge those of the future, for they will hold the memories, traditions and hopes of Aboriginal Australians.
We must always remember that this land is, was and always will be traditional Aboriginal land.
Blessings on your home and family.

Assistant Principal Pastoral Care Report
Carroll College has definitely offered our students a lot of opportunities to get involved in the last two weeks. Our long awaited DOOF finally happened last Thursday night after being postponed due to the heavy rainfall four weeks before. The amazing talents of our musicians and singers were on display on stage and enthusiastically supported by the students on the dance floor. As the evening closed it was wonderful to see and hear such a rousing rendition of ‘Shout to the Lord’ led by our leaders. Behind the scenes we had the Student Leadership Team and many staff working with and for our students giving up their evening with their families to ensure everyone had a fun night out. Thank you to everyone involved.
Last Monday night Senior Constable Donna Clarke spoke at our combined schools Cyber Safety presentation for parents. It was wonderful to be able to join with the Primary school parents and staff to hear such important information on how we can guide our young people to be safe online. The insert below is a snapshot of some of the statistics that were presented and discussed.
The important topic of Vaping was also covered. Donna shared with the parents the legal implications for young people who are caught not only using a Vape but possessing the Vape itself. Thank you to all the parents who attended and for our staff who supported the evening.
In our continuing effort to better inform our students about the situations they may encounter in the community, how to protect themselves and abide by the law we have invited Donna to speak with Year 9 and Year 10 early next week. Students will be encouraged to ask questions so they get the most out of the session.
All students should now be wearing their full winter uniform. Each day at school staff monitor how students are complying with the College uniform expectations, in particular hair being tied back, minimal jewellery and the correct length of uniforms. How our uniform is worn reflects on each of us, student, parents and staff. We ask that parents please work in partnership with the College to ensure that students are well presented.
During May and June across the country groups large and small participate in the Biggest Morning Tea to raise awareness of Cancer and much needed funds to assist with research. On 9 June students will have the opportunity to buy a freshly baked muffin from the Canteen at AM break for $2 each. Please mark this date in your calendar and encourage your child to participate.
In closing please remember that if you have any questions or concerns feel free to contact the College or your child’s Pastoral Coordinator.

Our Year 10 students have begun the very important process of selecting their subject choices for their senior years of study. These decisions made now can have a lasting impact on a student’s life, so we endeavor to provide them with as much help and guidance as possible. Yesterday was the first of four information sessions we will have with students to help them with their choices. Attached is a copy of the PowerPoint presentation that we presented to the students, as well as the Curriculum Handbook that was given to each student. Please ask them about it. Next week KLA coordinators will present to the students about what courses their KLA will be offering. Students will be given a summary sheet to fill in (copy attached) so they can record information to help them with their choices. After the information sessions, students will be surveyed so they can nominate three staff members that they would be comfortable with to discuss their choices. A timetable will be then developed to coordinate students meeting with one of their nominated staff. Parents are encouraged to come to these meetings if possible. Finally, the College will hold an Information Evening and Curriculum Expo, on July 13 starting at 5.30, where parents and students can discuss their courses with staff. Following the Expo, students will receive an email with login instructions to our online subject selection portal where they will enter their choices. From these student choices, the College decides which courses will run on next year’s timetable and on what lines. If a particular course does not get enough students selecting it, it will not run. A line of courses all happens at the same time on the timetable, so a student can only select one course per line. After these decisions are finalized, students are again asked to go into the online portal and finalise their choices based on the timetabled lines. If you have any questions about any of the above, please contact me at school.
Year 11 Mid-Year reports are being finalized this week and next. Please look out for these in Sentral and discuss them with your child. Students should be setting goals to improve their grades on their final reports.
Students in Years 7-10 are very busy with assessment tasks at the moment, as staff gather final data before writing reports for the end of the first semester. Please keep an eye on how your student is progressing. If a student does not use their time effectively, they can become increasingly overwhelmed at this time of year. Most students are allocated class time to complete assessment tasks, so please talk with your student about how they have used this time.
At our last Year 12 Administration meeting it was pointed out to students that they effectively have less than 15 weeks of school left before they sit their HSC exams. They were encouraged to set up a detailed study program that allocated specific times to the completion of homework assessment tasks and study. All too often, students get caught up in the day-to-day struggles of schoolwork such that time for effective study disappears. It was pointed out that planning for study time was just the same as planning to meet friends. If no plan is made, nothing usually happens! Below is a study planner that you should encourage your child to adopt.
John O’Neill
Assistant Principal
Curriculum and Achievement
The Study Timetable is designed to ensure you are using your time effectively.
The idea behind it is that you book in regular times to do your homework AND your study. Print off the two-week timetable (the third week is for our seniors as they approach their major exams).
In the first row, copy down the subjects you have at school that day. You will probably have some homework to complete in these subjects.
Then block out all the known disruptions where you cannot complete homework and study. This includes things like your sports training, work shifts, dinner and your bedtime. It is very important that you have a balanced life of some study and schoolwork and some relaxation activities.
The remaining times are when you can complete your homework and do some study for your exams. You MUST include study time, not just homework and assessment task completion. The more often you revisit a concept, the more of it you will remember, so make revision notes of what you did in class today, hand draw and label diagrams, make dot point summaries, etc. Next time you study this topic, go over these notes, see what you can remember, see if you can summarise your summaries.
If you do this for all your subjects every day you will be building your knowledge and your exam study will be a breeze.
Remember you must plan for success, and if you develop and follow a study timetable like this, you are setting yourself up for academic success.
Good luck with it and if you want any further help please speak to one of your teachers or myself.

Vinnies Winter Appeal
Once again, the College will be supporting the annual Vinnies Winter Appeal. Donations of warm items of clothing such as hats, gloves, scarves and jackets are welcomed. Vinnies would also love to receive blankets or other warm household items. Naturally all items need to be freshly washed, or preferably new. Due to a range of health restrictions, food is no longer able to be received by Vinnies. Cash donations are always welcomed and to make donating very easy, the College has set up a donations link on Qkr!
Liarna Miller, Youth Minister, is working with members of the Social Justice group to increase awareness of those living in difficult circumstances and to raise money for this dedicated organisation. One of their activities will be selling hot chocolates at AM Break in Weeks 7-10. The Social Justice group has other initiatives planned to support the 2021 Vinnies Winter Appeal. Stay tuned for more information about how you can support Vinnies.
As with our efforts for Project Compassion this year, a donation of $3 from every member of our community would easily allow us to cover each of the goals listed below.

National Reconciliation Week
National Reconciliation Week is celebrated each year from 27 May to 3 June. It follows National Sorry Day, which is marked each year on the 26 May. These events are an opportunity for us to recognise the traditional owners of this land, the struggles they have experienced and the unique place of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture within this country.
On Tuesday of this week, the Carroll College community marked National Sorry Day by creating Sorry Hands. On their hand, each member of our community made a commitment towards reconciliation within our country. The hands were then ‘planted’ in the ground to connect us to country.
Today, approximately 50 students attended the National Sorry Day Batemans Bay Bridge Walk, where we joined with the community to show our commitment to working towards reconciliation and a united Australia.
Year 9 students enjoyed an excellent morning interacting and holding various activities for Kindergarten students from both St Mary’s and St Bernard’s Primary Schools. Year 9 where highly engaged in the excellent production of Goldilocks and the Three bears from Year 6 students. After enjoying some fruit and mingling with the Kindy students, Year 9 helped lead various activities around St Mary’s including parachute, biscuit decorating, arts and crafts as well as some role playing.
I would like to thank Mrs Stephen and Mrs Schofield from St Marys for inviting Year 9 to the day. As well as Mrs Montgomery, Mrs Rudol and Mrs Chalker for attending the excursion with Year 9.

Archdiocese of Canberra Goulburn Sports - School Calendar
Dear Parents and Students
RE: CARROLL COLLEGE REPRESENTATIVE SPORT PATHWAYS
I would like to take this opportunity to remind parents and students of the procedures to follow regarding representative sporting events that occur at Carroll College and within the Canberra Goulburn Archdiocese and at a NSW Combined Catholic Colleges (CCC) level.
If a student wishes to try out for a NSW CCC sporting event they must register for the event via the https://csnsw.sport/ website. Here, parents will need to create an account for their child/children (if you haven't already done so). This can be done on the top right-hand tab of the website. Many parents will have already done this if their child moved from either St Mary's or St Bernard's Primary Schools into Carroll College. Parents can then search under the tab ‘sports’ and scroll down the list of available sporting options for NSW CCC. This will provide the relevant information (eg. dates, venues etc). If you would like your child to attend any events, you must register your child via the website. This formalises the process and it is where consent and payment are made. I will then receive a notification and this registration will be approved by me as Sports Coordinator. Students and parents should be checking this website on a regular basis to ensure that they do not miss any events that they may be interested in. It is the parents' responsibility to register their child for the event and ensure that they are able to get to and from the venue. This process will also need to be followed if a student is successful in making a Canberra Goulburn representative team, and then goes onto CCC level (eg. cross country, swimming and athletics).
Throughout the year, students will also have the opportunity to participate in a wide range of other sporting events such as Canberra Goulburn Archdiocese Gala Days (eg. soccer, netball, tennis etc). There will also be local sporting events held in the Eurobodalla area such a League Tag, cricket gala days, school surfing, AFL etc. These will be advertised via Sentral. It is the students' responsibility to read Sentral notices daily to ensure they do not miss out on an event they may be interested in. The organising teacher/s will place sign-up sheets on the sports notice board and selection trials may need to be held. If a student is selected to represent the College they will receive a hard copy of the information and parents will be notified via email. QKR is then used to give consent and payment (if required) for your child.
We endeavour to place as many sporting events as possible on the College Calendar so I would also encourage parents and students to check this on a regular basis for any events they may be interested in (due to the late notice of some sporting events they may not all be on the calendar in advance).
If you ever have any questions or concerns regarding sport at Carroll College, please feel free to email me directly.
Warm regards
Charlton Fogarty

The following are photos from the Student Hospitality Experience (SHE) trip to the Novotel earlier on in the term.
As mentioned, it was a very worthwhile event and gave the students an inside look into all areas of a fully operational establishment.
Students were able to network and discuss career options with the staff onsite that day.
The year 12 students really enjoyed themselves and were commended on their attitudes on the day.
Finance Update
Term 2 fee statements were emailed on 30 April with a due date of Friday 21 May. Thank you to families who have made payments. Any recent payments will be receipted shortly.
The 2021 Fee Schedule is available on the Carroll College website – Enrolment/Fees. In this section of the website, there is also a Fee Calculator to assist families in managing their school fee payments.
Currently enrolled families facing significant financial difficulty are able to apply for fee assistance. Fee assistance is income based and requires supporting documentation. You may be asked to meet to discuss aspects of your application and will be required to provide supporting documentation. Fee assistance can include:
- a payment plan (extends the payment period to 12 months and commits families to make ongoing payments to pay off school fees by the end of the school year)
- an extended payment plan (extends the payment period to greater than 12 months and commits families to make ongoing payments to pay off school fees over an approved, extended period of time)
- Fee Concession – partial reduction of fees and payment plan
- Fee Concession – full reduction of fees
Fee assistance is an annual application process based on your circumstances. In some situations, any reductions may be reviewed on a term by term basis, which would then require separate applications including supporting documentation at the start of each term. Where your circumstances improve during the school year, the College relies on families to get in touch, so that your fee assistance can be adjusted accordingly and the College is able to provide support to other families requiring assistance.
Government grants provide part of the funding required to operate the College. The balance of operating costs are funded through school fees. The ongoing operations of the College are dependent on parents paying the required level of fees. Every effort will be made by the College to recover fees from parents who are deemed to have the capacity to pay fees.
On the basis of the information provided in the Fee Assistance Form, the Fee Committee will determine an appropriate level of fee support based upon guidelines agreed to by Catholic Education Archdiocese of Canberra and Goulburn and Carroll College. The Fee Committee reviews fee assistance applications once per term, in the latter half of the term. Applicants will be then be advised of the outcome via email and letter. Please sign a copy of this letter and return via the envelope provided to the College. Following receipt of signed agreement letter, the concession will then be applied to your fees. Where you are granted a partial reduction in school fees with a payment plan, it is necessary that you commit to maintaining your payment plan. Where you are on a payment plan or extended payment plan, it is important to maintain those ongoing payments. If you need to change your payment plan arrangements, please get in touch with College as soon as practicable.
All information is treated and maintained confidentially.
If you require fee assistance, please contact Rhonda Forner, Business Manager by email at Rhonda.Forner@cg.catholic.edu.au

Notification of temporary road closure - North Head Dr, Moruya
As part of the roadworks around Garlandtown Bridge we will temporarily close North Head Drive to through traffic to create a safer worksite and reduce project duration.
When: From Monday 24 May until 30 June 2021, weather permitting.
Where: From the Granite Quarry to Bruce Cameron Drive (airport turnoff).
Detour: Commuters will need to use the Princes Highway and Broulee Road to access George Bass Drive and Moruya Airport. Motorists should allow extra time for the detour.
Traffic controllers will escort vehicles to properties within the construction site when necessary but through traffic will not be possible for any vehicles. Marshall’s and Priors bus companies have been notified and will liaise with families with students who reside in Garlandtown.
The road closure is necessary to safely undertake road rehabilitation works either side of Garlandtown Bridge and to accommodate the bridge upgrade. While the closure may cause some inconvenience to road users, we have limited space to safely undertake the works. Closing the road will enable the project to be completed within a reduced timeframe.
The project was identified as a priority to bring North Head Drive up to current standards suitable for a regional road. The completed works will improve road safety and access to Moruya Airport and nearby properties.
For information about the project can be found on our Garlandtown Bridge webpage
For further information about the road closure, please phone our Construction Coordinator, Greg Knight on 4474 1391.
