A Student's Prayer for a New School Year
Lord Jesus, I ask for Your help as I begin this new school year.
Allow me to experience Your presence in the many blessings You put before me.
Open my eyes to the new challenges and exciting opportunities that this new school year brings.
Open my heart and mind to new friends and new teachers.
Give me a generous spirit to be enthusiastic with my studies and courage me
to accept new opportunities.
Help me to be attentive to my teachers and let me experience Your presence in my new friends.
Jesus, inspire me to do my best this year!
Amen

OPENING COLLEGE ASSEMBLY
Our College Captains and Senior Leadership Team (SLT) capably lead our Assembly on Monday to welcome Years 7-12 Students and Staff to the 2021 academic year. This was the first whole school assembly since 2019 – quite incredible to believe this to be true!
The song ‘This Is Me’ from The Greatest Showman Ensemble, featured as a highlight of the Assembly. Our College band professionally recorded this song in 2019. Due to copyright laws, we are unable to share this on social media. We have however uploaded this to our secure Sentral portal so families can enjoy the musical talent of our Carroll College students. Instructions will be emailed to families to provide access in the coming days.
The relevance of this performance is to highlight the aspirations we have for all our students at the College. I want every child to know and understand that they can fulfil their dreams and career goals in a supportive and caring learning environment. High expectations for all is our commitment to students to ensure they are reaching their full potential.
In my address to students, I focused on the words…
“I can because of You”
Nothing is more important to me as Principal than knowing that our students are at the forefront of everything we undertake at the College. From individualised support, Pastoral and Academic Care – our students and families are central to all decision-making. It is my hope that students leave Carroll College at the end of Year 12 better people – empowered to make a difference in the world with an open and compassionate heart, and equipped with the necessary skills to achieve their goals.

CATALYST
Catholic Education Canberra Goulburn Learning Agenda – known as CATALYST
Catholic Education is introducing a new Learning Agenda in 2021. There are four focus areas:
- High Impact Teaching Practice
- Instructional Leadership
- K-2 Literacy
- Curriculum – Mathematics K-6
All schools across the Archdiocese have been asked to focus on two areas that align with their 2021 Annual Improvement Plan (AIP). We are fortunate to be already working in the area of Instructional Leadership. Our second area will focus on High Impact Teaching Practices.
Catalyst aligns to the CECG vision of Jesus Christ, our greatest teacher, calls us to share and witness to our Catholic Faith and Tradition, build inclusive communities and deliver contemporary quality learning opportunities for every person.
Catalyst does this by:
- Nurturing our teachers, leaders, and principals to transform students’ lives through learning
- Elevating the impact we have on student learning outcomes through quality professional learning and high quality curriculum resources
- Improving the equity of the education we provide by implementing teaching practices that benefit all
As part of Catalyst, a research project led by the Science of Language and Reading (SOLAR) Lab at La Trobe University will be undertaken. This research project will be investigating teacher understanding of language and literacy, prior to implementing HITP and reading instruction in 2021.
K-12 THEME 2021
At the end of last year, our K-12 Student Leadership Teams for 2021 met virtually to decide on a theme for the year. After much discussion and reflection on what it means to be part of a Catholic school community, and in light of 2020, the students decided on the theme highlighted above. I think it is optimistic and forward-thinking. A new year awaits!
GUIDING PRINCIPLES
We have revisited our College guiding principles with students this week. These encompass our aspirations for each and every child. It is essential that students at Carroll College know what we stand for as a Catholic community and why our actions and attitudes matter.
BRoulee ABC
At Carroll College, we use our BRoulee ABC to guide, shape, and affirm positive behaviours and actions at the College.
To be a strong, cohesive, and caring learning community, we aim to:
BE CHRIST-LIKE
Christ taught us compassion, justice, hope, and joy. In our interactions with each other and the wider community, as a College we, too, ask members of our learning community to show compassion, to act justly, and to be people of hope and joy.
RESPECT ALL
Students are asked to show respect through their thoughts, words, and actions.
AIM HIGH
In all facets of school life - academic, pastoral, and extra-curricular - students are asked to give their best.
BE PROUD
We ask students to be proud of who they are and what they stand for, to have pride in themselves and in their school.
CELEBRATE SUCCESS
As a community, we take every opportunity to affirm, encourage, and celebrate successes.
CONGRATULATIONS…
Congratulations to Mr Sean Mulally and his wife Yasmin who were married during the holidays. On behalf of the College community, I wish them every happiness for their future together.
We have much to look forward to as we move into the term. Please know the staff and I are available to assist in any way we can. We faced many challenges last year. It is my hope that we can enjoy 2021 with renewed energy, whilst maintaining a spirit of peacefulness in our daily work.
With respect and encouragement to you,
Jacqueline Heffernan

Assistant Principal Pastoral Care Report
Welcome everyone to 2021. I hope all our families have had a restful break and our students are feeling energised and ready to embrace the opportunities that a fresh year provides.
My name is Mrs Louise Ibbett and I am the Assistant Principal Pastoral at Carroll College. In the short time I have been at the College I have been very impressed with our hardworking staff who dedicate themselves to creating a wonderful environment where teaching and caring for our students can take place. From the first day, it was wonderful to see students entering the College grounds happy to see each other and greeting their teachers. During this first week, I have been impressed with the commitment the students have to ensuring that the College grounds and classrooms are always kept so neat and tidy. I hope that this continues throughout the year.
At this point in the year, it is timely to remind everyone of the importance for students to arrive on time for homeroom. This daily routine allows students to build strong relationships with their peers, Homeroom teachers and Pastoral Coordinator. It is in this time that we all join in daily prayer and familiarise ourselves with important notices. I would also like to remind everyone about the College expectations around the correct wearing of school uniforms, personal grooming and appropriate behaviour. Information about these expectations can be easily accessed on the College Website.
Our senior students are now either interested in learning to drive or already have their licenses. If your son or daughter intends to drive to school or be a passenger in a car driven by another student, then they need to ensure that they have completed the correct documentation which is signed, handed in at the office and approved before this driving begins. To assist parents with teaching a learner driver and road safety please check out the program links below.
Here at Carroll College we value working in partnership with our parents and carers with our students as the focus. If you have any questions or concerns please make sure that you make contact with Reception either by phone or email. From here they will connect you to the right person.
Kind regards
Louise Ibbett

Assistant Principal Curriculum News
A very warm welcome to all our new students and families and welcome back to everyone else. This year will hopefully be a huge improvement on last year so we can get back to a more normal routine.
Students have settled back well into classes. This year we are making a concentrated effort to ensure we all do the simple things very well. For students, this will mean that they all come to class fully prepared to learn. They must have all the equipment they need for each lesson and a charged laptop. Staff will not allow students to use their phones as their device. Can parents please assist us in this area by ensuring your child has preferably a laptop, or if not, at least an iPad.
At the College Assembly on Monday I spoke to the students about the Lesson Intentions and Success Criteria that all teachers introduce at the start of every lesson. I explained that these are like a road map to a destination. The Lesson Intention outlines what the students will be covering in the lesson and the Success Criteria is the destination, or what they should be able to do by the end of the lesson. I encouraged all students to pay particular attention when the teacher was introducing these and to ensure they could achieve the Success Criteria by the end of the lesson. I encouraged them to speak with their teachers if they experience any difficulties along the way. Parents could support us in this endeavour by asking their child what the Lesson Intention was for some of their classes at the end of the day.
All students in Years 7 to 10 undertake Progressive Assessment Testing in Reading (PAT-R) and Maths (PAT-M) at Carroll College. This testing is a snapshot of a point in time of your child’s ability in these areas. Staff use the data to gain a better understanding of your child and to develop their teaching programs to cater to students’ differing needs. The College also uses the data to track growth in student year groups. We will be testing all Year 7 and any new students in Years 8-10 this week and next week. The tests are approximately 40 minutes in duration and are online. Please encourage your child to work to their best ability during these tests. A timetable for when these tests are on can be found in this newsletter.
Students in Years 9-11 have until Wednesday next week to make any final changes to their electives. By this time all students should have experienced several lessons and be settled into their routines. Please speak with your children about this deadline.
Our Year 12 cohort of 2020 achieved excellent HSC results last year. Jade Briggs achieved our highest ATAR, with a score of 96.7. Nicholas Usher came in second with 92 and Cameron Stocks came in third with 90. There were many scores in the 80s and 70s with every student we spoke to achieving the score they needed to pursue their plans. Overall our students gained 12 Band 6 results (the highest band), 51 Band 5 results, and 91 Band 4 results. Overall 77% of our results were in these top 3 Bands. Congratulations to these students and we wish them the best of luck as they move into the world of work or tertiary study.
All students in Years 11 and 12 now have access to a new learning tool called Edrolo. The College has invested considerably in this program to allow our senior students access to this online learning platform. The platform has almost all our senior courses available to the students. They can access explanation videos on all the syllabus dot points, as well as computer marked quizzes to test their progress. The link and information below will allow your child to access it.
- Go to edrolo.com.au/activate/wqj-zpx and follow the prompts OR
- Go to com.au, click the 'Activate Account' button and enter this 6 digit code: wqj-zpx
It is important that the school and home work in partnership to ensure your child receives the best education possible. Please make contact with class teachers as soon as any issues arise. The sooner we know about things, the easier it is to resolve them. Also, please ensure you can access the Parent Portal in Sentral. This is one of our main ways to communicate with you, and all school reports are “posted” to this portal. Contact the school if you need help.

A Record of Vaccination will be provided to each student vaccinated at each clinic on a physical card. Details about vaccinations given at school will also be uploaded to the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) to support complete vaccination histories.
If you have any queries, please do not hesitate to contact Kym Bush SNSWLHD Immunisation Coordinator, Goulburn PHU on 1300 066 055.
Students receiving the vaccination can wear their sports uniform to school on the vaccination day.
Year 7 PAT timetable
Year 7 students will be completing their online Progressive Achievement Tests (PAT) for Reading and Mathematics during Weeks 2 and 3.
PAT Assessments provide objective, norm-referenced information to teachers about their students’ skills and understandings in a range of key areas. Each PAT has its own proficiency scale with descriptors outlining the content and skills students are consolidating at any given point on that scale. Each PAT assessment provides data on student performance, making PAT ideal for understanding students’ current strengths and weaknesses, informing teaching and learning, and monitoring progress over the year. The tests are online, multiple-choice and each test will take approximately 40 minutes. I encourage all students to do their best during these tests as the data will be used by their class teachers.

Sandra Harris
Administration Coordinator
Hello, I am Naomi Gill, Carroll College’s Careers Adviser. I look forward to working with the College community this year. Careers management is like many things in life - it needs conscious effort and goal setting to constantly navigate the ever-changing world of work and study. It is important that students take an active role in their career planning, so they make informed decisions and meet application deadlines.
In order to assist students and parents with career planning Carroll college has a designated careers website https://www.careerscarrollcollege.com/ which I encourage you and your child to regularly visit and explore. You can sign up under the calendar for weekly email summaries of opportunities and events that are occurring in areas such as apprenticeships/ traineeships, universities, Australia Defence Force and other fields. Students in Year 10, 11 and 12 will have a student account to assist them in managing their careers exploration and goal setting.
Information will continue to be distributed via the careers Facebook page and through student email, so students are reminded to regularly check and then take the necessary actions as required.
A VET induction day will occur on the morning of the 25th February in the Hub. Students in Year 11 who have selected a VET course will complete induction paperwork, work placement induction and registration, uniform fittings and will need to bring their Unique Student Identifier (USI) with them or bring a form of identification with them such as their license, medicare card or passport to generate a USI.
The UOW Discovery Day is on 18th February for Yr 12 students. It is a fantastic opportunity for students to experience what a day at University is like. UOW Discovery Day registration is open with details emailed to Year 12 students in week 1 of the term and will close on 8th February. No late registrations will be accepted due to Covid planning restrictions. College permission notes are available on Qkr. We look forward to all Year 12 being a part of a great day.

These prizes will be awarded at an upcoming assembly. Congratulations to all students who participated and had their work displayed through the holiday period in Batemans Bay.
Another fantastic achievement for Visual Arts 2020 was the design and completion of the new Mural lining the entrance area near the canteen. A wonderful bright addition to the school for all to enjoy.
2021 brings another year of growing elective classes. Our combined year 9 and 10 classes have begun a task focusing on the environment and will be studying the work of Australian Artist John Wolseley. When finalising payments on Qkr, please make sure to finalise anything that is in the cart on the top right hand corner. If the cart is not empty and you do not have a receipt the payment and consent has not been finalised. This includes any events or excursions that only require permission (eg. swimming consent notes). Once you have signed the permission note you will still need to ‘checkout’ at the end to ensure the permission note is finalised.
Qkr! Is our preferred payment option. If you need help using this please contact the Office.
