Dear Parents, Students and Friends
This Sunday marks the beginning of Advent. Advent is a season of the liturgical year observed in most Christian denominations. It is a period of spiritual preparation during the four weeks leading up to Christmas.
I share this Advent prayer with you as we journey towards this most holy time of the year.
Year 7 Orientation Day
Today we have welcomed our soon to be Year 7 students to the College for Orientation Day. We have 115 students enrolled from ten local primary schools, and three students new to the area. It was wonderful to welcome them all and settle them into their new school. It has been fabulous to see the students engaged in various activities in the secondary context. They are eager for next year and it was lovely to see their excitement. A happy day was had by all!
Year 7 students begin next year on Tuesday 1 February 2022.
Catholic School Parents Australia (CSPA): Nurturing Your Child Through Transition
CSPA has developed a toolkit, ‘Gearing Up for Parent Engagement in Student Learning’ to assist families and schools to help make the transition into Primary and Secondary school a great experience for children and young people. The toolkit includes a module on transitions, Nurturing Your Child Through Transition, for Primary and Secondary students. These modules provide practical and concrete advice to assist students and parents to navigate the anxiety that can sometimes happen with change.
PARENT ENGAGEMENT
A student’s academic development is enhanced when parental engagement is strong. We are committed to supporting families in the education of their children. If you are a new or existing family to Carroll College, I take this opportunity to encourage and welcome your involvement in college life as we look to the new year. We are optimistic that 2022 will bring greater freedoms to resume normal school activities to the robust level we enjoy!
Below is a summary from a recent article on the benefits of Parental Engagement. Mr Paul Penberthy, Carroll College Community Council Chair, and member of the Council of Catholic Schools Parents (CCSP) and Catholic School Parents Archdiocese of Canberra Goulburn (CSPACG), has prepared this article to support families in their sacred role of raising children.
A shared responsibility for education among parents and teachers…
As our children navigate the 13 year journey through school, it is natural to wonder about what’s at the end of it? We hear about the changing jobs environment driven by emerging technologies, with traditional careers disappearing and new ones emerging. The question arises as to what can we do as parents to set our kids on the right path? How can we set them up to have viable options, and as importantly, to help them grow into well rounded, happy beings in an increasingly complex world?
Well, a mountain of research has identified there’s much we can do as parents to make a big difference. It has been defined as “Parental Engagement”. This means a shared responsibility for education among parents and teachers, where learning transcends the school environment and formal curriculum.
Sounds great, but what difference does “parental engagement” make? Australian and international research has confirmed the following impacts:
- Higher grades and test scores
- Enrolment in higher level programs and advanced classes
- Higher successful completion of classes
- Lower drop-out rates
- Higher graduation rates
- Greater likelihood of commencing postsecondary education
Achievement of the above creates more career options for kids leaving school. So, whatever the world throws at them, they will have choices. What about social and emotional wellbeing? The ability to adapt and deal with challenges and lead a happy and fulfilling life? Here again the research into “parental engagement” has revealed positive outcomes:
- More regular school attendance and greater engagement in schoolwork
- Better social skills
- Improved behaviour
- Better adaptation to school
- A greater sense of personal competence and efficacy for learning
So, what does “parental engagement” involve in practical terms? Some of the following:
- Communicating with kids about our expectations from education and the value of learning
- Discussing learning strategies (best ways to learn and integrate knowledge, free of distractions)
- Linking schoolwork to current events and related topics (e.g. dinnertime discussions on events of interest to the child and what they have studied in class)
- Nurturing educational aspirations and making plans for the future
- Providing a supportive home learning environment (designating an area for homework, providing access to reading material, helping with the organisation of homework/ study)
- Out of home/ school activities such as visiting museums, libraries, galleries, talks etc.
Whatever our own experiences of education in the past, personal beliefs about our role in educating our kids and effectiveness in doing so… there’s no denying the evidence. Parental Engagement makes a big difference – to our kid’s career options and how they will end up thinking and feeling about themselves and others.

Assistant Principal Curriculum News
As the school year draws to a close, 11 staff members are busily completing the final steps in order to graduate from a year-long professional learning course run by Teach Well. The High Impact Teaching Practices in Action (HITP in Actions) series has been undertaken by staff from a range of key learning areas and has involved attending professional learning days, completing a variety of deliverables including film lessons that have received direct feedback on professional practice and pedagogy.
The “Vision and Values” statement from Teach Well provides insight into the guiding principles of the course and ways in which learning such as this benefits teachers and students alike.
Our Vision & Values
Our Vision
Our vision is an Australia where every child can reach their full potential. We see a world-leading education system, where our young people thrive through excellent teaching, in every classroom, every year of their schooling. We see a society where all Australians value teaching and learning and recognise the importance and complexity of the craft of teaching.
Our Approach
- To provide teachers and school leaders with life-long learning opportunities that are rich, real-world experiences with follow-on support, enabling high impact practices in every classroom and school.
- To support teachers and leaders to be more confident and able to improve student learning as a result of these opportunities.
- To empower deep and broad connections between teachers and school leaders across the system.
- To provide opportunities for all teachers and leaders to respond to new insights into effective teaching
- To bridge the gap from theory and evidence to practice at the classroom and school level.
Our Values
- Students come first. Our work with teachers and leaders must support all students to learn better.
- How teachers teach matters. We believe this is true both for the way we should work with teachers and leaders and for the students in their classrooms and schools.
- What teachers teach matters. We believe the content and curriculum of what we teach are just as important as how we teach, both for the learning of the teachers and leaders we work with and for how they approach the learning of their students.
- How school leaders lead matters. School leaders have the unique ability to align the work of teachers and staff to the needs of their students. When school leaders lead differently, teachers can work differently too.
- Life-long learning is for all. We seek to always learn from the teachers and leaders we work with and we believe in empowering all teachers and leaders to continue to adapt, learn and grow throughout their entire career.
Congratulations to the graduating teachers of the Teach Well HITP in Action series:
Belle Barling | Stephen Knight |
Erica Drewsen | Anna McManus |
Debbie Enfield | Emma Mullins |
Jacqui Heffernan | Sonia Pope |
Lauren Herbert | Anna Smart |

An additional eight teachers will undertake the course in 2022 whilst the whole staff continues to all engage with the CE’s Catalyst professional learning program. It is an exciting time for improved professional practice in our classrooms.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas!
The Year 11 Hospitality students have been busy getting ready for Christmas. This week the students made Gingerbread Men (well Men, Women, bears, trees and stars) and are starting to make some gifts; which we can’t tell anyone about in case you get one! The gingerbread looked so great and the students thought it was an easy recipe to make before Christmas with the family. I just loved the bear with the heart decorated by Grace Reid.
Attached below is the Gingerbread recipe for you to make with your family.
Students looked forward to greeting our new Year 7 students today and were busy preparing morning tea and lunch for them to enjoy. Welcome to Carroll College Year 6! We all hope you choose Food Technology and Hospitality in the future.

Seasons For Growth
Seasons Toolkit: Riding the waves of change
Term 4 fee statements were emailed on 15 October with a due date of Friday 5 November. Thank you to families who have made payments. Any recent payments will be receipted shortly.
Any families currently who have submitted a Fee Concession Application, your application process is currently underway and will be finalised in the next two weeks.
Families assessed as having the capacity to pay fees are expected to pay their fees. Where families demonstrate an unwillingness to pay fees, the College will recover fees and this may involve referral to a debt collection agency. Additional costs incurred in the collection of fees are the responsibility of the debtor/parent/guardian.
Covid-19 Fee Assistance
Catholic Education and Carroll College will support families who have been financially impacted as a result of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic in Term 3 and 4, 2021. Where your family is experiencing financial stress due to job loss, being stood down, reduction in work hours, business downturn or closure resulting from the Covid-19 pandemic, full or partial fee relief is available. Please complete the Covid-19 Fee Assistance Request Form and you will be asked to provide supporting documentation. Please contact the Business Manager via email Rhonda.forner@cg.catholic.edu.au
It is important to seek this assistance by Monday 29 November at the latest in order to process your application. Access for Covid fee relief is not available after this date.
Managing your Fees
The College recommends a regular payment approach to managing your school fees and to reduce the financial burden that delaying fee payments may cause. For example, a regular weekly or fortnightly payment through Direct Debit, BPay or Qkr! can assist in managing your school fees. The 2021 Fee Schedule is available on the Carroll College website – Enrolment/Fees. In this section of the website, there is also a Fee Calculator to assist families in determining fee payment amounts in managing their school fee payments. If you are unable to pay off your school fees in full by the end of the year, you will need to setup a Fee Agreement with the College. A fee agreement assists both the College and families in managing school fees. Please contact our finance team via finance.ccb@cg.catholic.edu.au to obtain Fee Agreement Form.
Fee Assistance – Concession Application
Currently enrolled families facing significant financial difficulty are able to apply for fee assistance. Fee assistance is income based and requires supporting documentation. You may be asked to meet to discuss aspects of your application and will be required to provide supporting documentation. Fee assistance can include:
- a payment plan (extends the payment period to 12 months and commits families to make ongoing payments to pay off school fees by the end of the school year)
- an extended payment plan (extends the payment period to greater than 12 months and commits families to make ongoing payments to pay off school fees over an approved, extended period of time)
- Fee Concession – partial reduction of fees and payment plan
- Fee Concession – full reduction of fees
Fee assistance is an annual application process based on your circumstances. In some situations, any reductions may be reviewed on a term by term basis, which would then require separate applications including supporting documentation at the start of each term. Where your circumstances improve during the school year, the College relies on families to get in touch, so that your fee assistance can be adjusted accordingly and the College is able to provide support to other families requiring assistance.
Government grants provide part of the funding required to operate the College. The balance of operating costs are funded through school fees. The ongoing operations of the College are dependent on parents paying the required level of fees. Every effort will be made by the College to recover fees from parents who are deemed to have the capacity to pay fees.
On the basis of the information provided in the Fee Assistance Form, the Fee Committee will determine an appropriate level of fee support based upon guidelines agreed to by Catholic Education Archdiocese of Canberra and Goulburn and Carroll College. The Fee Committee reviews fee assistance applications once per term, in the latter half of the term. Applicants will be then be advised of the outcome via email and letter. Please sign a copy of this letter and return via the envelope provided to the College. Following receipt of signed agreement letter, the concession will then be applied to your fees. Where you are granted a partial reduction in school fees with a payment plan, it is necessary that you commit to maintaining your payment plan. Where you are on a payment plan or extended payment plan, it is important to maintain those ongoing payments. If you need to change your payment plan arrangements, please get in touch with College as soon as practicable.
Change in Circumstances – Request for Split Billing
Where there has been a change to your family circumstances and you require split billing, this creates a variation to your school fee obligations from initial enrolment. Please request the Split Billing Request Form which needs to be signed and dated by both parents/guardians to take effect. This form requires parents to indicate the percentage split for fees and acknowledges your obligations relating to fees, levies and charges incurred while your child is enrolled at the College. Please contact our finance team via finance.ccb@cg.catholic.edu.au to obtain a Split Billing Request Form.
All information is treated and maintained confidentially.
If you require fee assistance, please contact Rhonda Forner, Business Manager by email at Rhonda.Forner@cg.catholic.edu.au

When finalising payments on Qkr, please make sure to finalise anything that is in the cart on the top right-hand corner. If the cart is not empty and you do not have a receipt, this means the payment and consent has not been finalised. This includes any events or excursions that only require permission (eg. swimming consent notes). Once you have signed the permission note you will still need to ‘checkout’ at the end of the process to ensure the permission note is finalised. Thank you!

As you may already know, Marymead, in partnership with The Family Place, will soon deliver ‘Revival’ a new program in the Eurobodalla region supported by funding from COORDINARE – South Eastern NSW PHN through the Australian Government’s PHN program.
Our recent community survey relating to Revival’s deliverables told us of the importance in highlighting links back to land, water and healing. We have taken these comments on board and are seeking your help in sharing our LOGO poll - the first step in communicating the intent of this important program to our community.
Revival will address a high need from the community for social and emotional support as a result of the bushfires that adversely impacted the region in 2019-20. Revival will deliver non-clinical child and family supports, strengthening the communities (individuals and families’) resilience, whilst building cohesion, inclusion and wellbeing.
Revival will provide accessible supports within the community, as informed from community engagement, addressing the diverse needs of the community. Participants may find themselves engaging in social, cultural, recreational, psychosocial and wellbeing activities and groups.

Many thanks for being a part of this important, community-led initiative.
