Dear Parents, Students and Friends
I trust that you enjoyed a wonderful winter break. As we begin Term 3, I offer the following news and information to support a successful start to the new term.
As communicated at the beginning of the year, the Catholic Church is celebrating the Jubilee Year of Hope, a sacred year officially proclaimed by Pope Francis. This special year-long event invites Catholics around the world to embrace a time of grace, prayer, and reflection. It serves as an opportunity to renew their faith, draw closer to God, and centre their lives on mercy and forgiveness. Guided by the theme "Pilgrims of Hope," the Jubilee Year highlights a shared journey of faith, hope, and spiritual renewal, inspiring all to walk together in hope and trust in God's love.
During the break, Mrs Kym Millikin and Mr Andrew Kenneally travelled to Italy as part of the Archdiocese’s Jubilee Year pilgrimage. They encountered the pathways of some of the Church’s greatest saints, from St Francis and St Clare of Assisi to St Peter and Paul in Rome, where they crossed the threshold of the Holy Door in St Peter’s Basilica and received the Jubilee blessing. I am confident their experiences will have a profound impact on them both personally and professionally for years to come, contributing to their capacity as Catholic leaders.
ACCREDITATION B - Nurturing the call: tending the seed
Teaching in a Catholic School
On the last day of last term, Accreditation B was offered as professional learning for all teaching staff who had not experienced this training and received their accreditation at this level. Whether teachers are Catholic or not, their choice to teach in a Catholic school calls them to make a commitment to share with parents a sacred responsibility for the educational, spiritual and emotional development of the young people in their care.
“This challenge demands certain essential qualities. It requires careful preparation, a facility for reflection and a constant readiness for professional renewal and conversion of heart. Such teachers bring to their task an extraordinary giftedness and a profound sense of mission which significantly impact on their schools and on their own effectiveness. All teachers who are people of faith, trying to live according to the values of the Gospel, can make an enormous contribution to the specifically Catholic character of the schools in which they work and to the growth in faith of their students.”
The Privilege and the Challenge:
The Teacher in the Catholic School
Sydney, 2009, p. 6
It is important to highlight that Catholic Character is not merely articulated or delivered as a slogan:
- it is present and identifiable in relationships within the college
- it is present in the symbols, the visible metaphors of Catholic faith and culture, in and around the college
- it is present in the rituals and routines of daily college life
- it is present in the way pastoral care is exercised and the way pastoral care programs are developed
- it is present in the celebrations and the values those celebrations reflect
- it emanates from an understanding and appreciation of the Sacred Scriptures and the life and tradition of the Church.

WELCOME FR JOSHUA SCOTT – PARISH PRIEST
SACRED HEART PARISH MORUYA
It has been delightful to welcome Fr Josh as our new Parish Priest. In such a short time, Fr Josh is enlivening the parish and bringing a fresh perspective to Sacred Heart parishioners. Fr Josh intends on visiting the college regularly and being involved in the daily religious life of Carroll. A warm welcome, Fr Josh!
NAIDOC WEEK
NAIDOC Week celebrations for the College began last week with our biennial event known as Yuin Bunaan on Wednesday 23 July at Captain Oldrey Park, Broulee. Mrs Michelle Katuke, Mr Riley Nolan and Miss Sam Ellis organised the Yuin Bunaan in collaboration with St Mary’s and St Bernard’s staff. The Yuin Bunaan is a cultural celebration held by our Catholic Schools on the South Coast. Students, families and staff from our three schools were involved and our Aboriginal families were invited to attend. This event forms part of our NAIDOC celebrations and is a day for students and families to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Culture through participation in a range of traditional activities, including a traditional cook-out. Funding to support this event was provided through a grant from Aboriginal Affairs.
Last Friday 25 July, our Indigenous students, accompanied by Mrs Katuke, Mr Nolan, Miss Ellis and I attending the NAIDOC Mass at St Christopher’s Cathedral in Canberra.
Following Mass, we undertook a guided tour of Reconciliation Place before travelling home. It was a really enjoyable day with our students who attended.
Today, we have celebrated as a college community with a NAIDOC Service in our hall. Thank you to all involved who have been working with our Indigenous students and leaders to prepare for this special occasion. A profoundly moving and deeply meaningful service.
This year’s theme chosen by the National NAIDOC Committee, The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy marks a powerful milestone: 50 years of honouring and elevating Indigenous voices, culture, and resilience. The 2025 theme celebrates not only the achievements of the past but the bright future ahead, empowered by the strength of our young leaders, the vision of our communities, and the legacy of our ancestors.
SCHOOL PERFORMANCE AND DEVELOPMENT LEADER (SPADL)
We are delighted to welcome Mrs Philippa Brearley to our school community this term as our new School Performance and Development Leader (previously known as the Performance and Improvement Leader – PIL), succeeding Mr Tim Smith. Mrs Brearley will be visiting the college regularly, and we warmly congratulate her on this significant appointment.
CATALYST FOCUS
Guided Practice – 'We Do'
Our staff professional development day to begin Term 3 saw the continuation of our Catalyst implementation with HITP (High Impact Teaching Practices) Theory & Practice modules. We looked at effective teaching with Guided Practice – the ‘We Do’ phase of the Gradual Release of Responsibility model. This research-based instructional framework is designed to transition learning from teacher-led to student-driven in three stages: I Do, We Do, You Do.
This session zeroed in on the ‘We Do’ phase, where students actively participate with teacher support. We’ll explore how to:
- Manage cognitive load effectively,
- Use targeted questioning to deepen understanding,
- Distinguish between review and retrieval, and
- Monitor and support student progress during guided practice.
This session was valuable for refining our knowledge and understanding of explicit instruction and deepening student engagement.
As part of supporting schools with the onboarding of new teachers, the Catholic Education Teaching and Learning team facilitated an onboarding day yesterday in Canberra. This was attended by Mr Barnett, Mrs Jamieson, Ms Paull, Mrs McAsh, Mrs Gosch and Mr Nebelung.
We are proud to offer an array of exceptional opportunities for both students and staff. Our students are truly fortunate to engage with the principles of the Science of Learning, which provide invaluable insights into the learning process. The application of cognitive load theory, in particular, elevates learning to an entirely new level, fostering deeper understanding and enhanced outcomes.
With respect and encouragement to you.

Installation Mass for Father Joshua Scott
The Sacred Heart Moruya Parish has recently welcomed Father Joshua Scott, who has joined us from his previous parish in Queanbeyan. A formal installation Mass has been set for next Sunday 10 August, at 10.00am. Following Mass, there will be a morning tea to celebrate and connect with one another. We’re also pleased to share that Father Josh will be visiting the College each Tuesday to connect more personally with staff and students, visit Religious Education classrooms, and offer spiritual guidance and support. Welcome Father Josh from all the staff and students at Carroll College!
SHINE Conference : A Powerful Experience for Year 9 and 10 Students
We are excited to offer our Year 9 and 10 students the opportunity to attend the SHINE Conference in Canberra at Merici College, on Friday 12th September; a vibrant celebration of youth ministry, faith and community. Hosted by CSYMI, SHINE is a day packed with music, workshops, guest speakers and the chance to grow in confidence as young leaders of faith. This is an incredible chance for students to deepen their connection with their faith and peers from across the Archdiocese.
If you are a Year 9 or 10 student interested in attending, or if you’d simply like to know more, please come and see Mrs Smart. If we can secure enough numbers, we will be able to provide bus transport at no cost to students.
Support Our Winter Sleepout
A number of brave students and staff will be taking part in the Winter Sleepout later this term to raise funds and awareness for those experiencing homelessness. You can support them by donating via this link: https://shoutforgood.com/fundraisers/CarrollCollegeWinterSleepout
You’re welcome to donate to a specific student or to the cause in general. We also encourage our school community to share the link on their social media pages to help us spread awareness and generate support.
Prayers for our Year 12 Students
As our Year 12 students move into their Trial HSC examination period, we keep them in our thoughts and prayers. We commend them for their commitment and perseverance and pray that they may approach this time with calm, confidence and clarity.
Thank you for your ongoing support of our students and our community.

Welcome back to Term 3
Congratulations to the students who were recognised for their academic achievements at the college awards assembly on Tuesday.
The awards that were given are recognition of the hard work, effort and achievement in their course work. Creating a vibrant and supportive learning environment is a key ingredient for individual success but also provides peers with a role modelled work ethic.
Thank you to the family and friends who were also able to join us for the ceremony and morning tea.
Student Leadership Team
Congratulations and thank you to our current SLT for their hard work and ongoing contribution to the college community. The energy, enthusiasm and team work the SLT bring to their roles is a wonderful example for the younger students in the college. Thank you to Ms Boller for her amazing support of these leaders.
The process of determining our new Student Leadership Team for 2025/26 has just begun. Thank you very much to all the Year 11 students who have put themselves forward for consideration. Over the coming weeks, interviews will occur, and student and staff voice will be sought. Once the process is completed, we look forward to announcing the successful applicants and their commissioning ceremony in early September.
Council of Catholic School Parents
The Council of Catholic school parents is a very supportive organisation that aims to inspire and enable parents and carers to build communities of faith and hope. Their mission is to provide leadership, advocacy and support for parents and carers of children in NSW Catholic schools.
In the coming weeks, the CCSP is offering a range of webinars which focus on highly relevant topics for parents. Below is a brief outline of some of the topics that will be covered in Term 3. If you are interested, please register.
Tuesday 5 August, 2025 7.00pm - 8.30pm
Strengthening young people Against anxiety – CCSP is hosting a live webinar with Karen Young, a psychologist who is in private practice and is now recognised as a leading authority on child and adolescent anxiety.

Young people and sleep
The Sleep Connection is presenting a webinar focusing on sleep and the impacts it has on learning, mental health and behaviour. This session is suitable for parents and carers with children in both primary and secondary schools.
Did you know that approximately 70% of teenagers and many primary-age children experience insufficient sleep? Inadequate sleep impacts our kids' health, resilience and performance.
This webinar is especially designed for parents and carers with tips and strategies to ensure children are getting enough sleep - leading to better focus, mental health and academic success.
The topics covered will include;• Why we sleep • What happens to our brain and body when we sleep • The impact of sleep on our children’s academic performance, behaviour and mental health • How much sleep we need to function optimally • Sleep thieves • Effects of technology on sleep • Signs of sleep deprivation • Smart sleep tips for the whole family • Where to get information and professional help. To register, use the link or QR code on the attached flyer.
Thursday 21 August 12.00pm – 1.15pm
Parent and Carer series: AI-assisted image-based abuse: navigating the deepfake threat. (It’s suitable for parents and carers of young people in upper primary and secondary school).
AI tools are evolving fast and young people are often the first to explore and adopt them. But with this rapid change comes real risks. From deepfakes to digitally altered images, these tools are now being misused in ways that can harm or exploit children and young people, including image-based abuse. This 45-minute webinar for parents and carers will cover: • how these new technologies are being used and why it matters • how these new technologies are impacting children and young people • Steps you can take to increase awareness and support your child and how to report. To register, use the link below.
Good luck Year 12
We wish all our Year 12 student success in the upcoming Trial HSC Examinations. During this time students are encouraged to take good care of themselves, to find the balance between study, work and sleep and to strive to eat a good diet during the examination period. Sometimes this is easier said than done. During the examination period the pastoral team and Counsellors are available to support our students and families. Please contact us if you have any questions or concerns.
Kind regards

Carroll College Mountain Bike Program
Carroll College is excited to announce the beginning of our mountain biking program. The south coast of NSW has quickly become a must visit destination for mountain bikers both nationally and internationally with the opening of Eden, Narooma and more importantly Mogo Mountain Bike Park. Carroll College has purchased a brand new Shingleback Bike trailer and on Friday 18 July we completed our first excursion to Mogo. Mountain Biking is an inclusive sport that has strong community links and promotes an active and healthy lifestyle that welcomes all participants regardless of age, gender or race. With the strong support of our College Principal, Jacqui Heffernan, Carroll College will be running regular excursions to both Mogo, Narooma and more broadly when racing opportunities arise for students. In Term 4, we will be running a girls only excursion and two additional excursions for interested students.
In October 2025, Mogo will be hosting the Sea Otter Bike Festival, which has a history as the biggest Bike Festival in the world. It is the first time the festival is being hosted in the southern hemisphere and we are lucky enough to have it come to Mogo. This festival will continue to promote the south coast of NSW as a destination location for Mountain Bikers and Carroll College will continue to support and promote living healthy and active lifestyles on bikes. https://seaotter.au/

Celebrating NAIDOC 2025: The Next Generation — Strength, Vision & Legacy
This month, students and staff across our school community have been immersed in NAIDOC Week celebrations, proudly engaging in events that honour the 2025 theme: The Next Generation – Strength, Vision & Legacy. From public ceremonies to cultural festivals and Mass celebrations, the past few weeks have been a powerful expression of pride, connection, and respect.
Eurobodalla Shire Council Flag Raising Ceremony
On 11 July, our Indigenous Leaders, Savannah McGann and Robert Slockee, were invited to speak at the Eurobodalla Shire Council's NAIDOC Flag Raising Ceremony. They addressed this year’s theme with strength and grace, sharing reflections on the legacy of their ancestors and their ongoing commitment to elevating Indigenous voices and culture. Their thoughtful words captured the spirit of NAIDOC 2025 and inspired all in attendance.
Following the event, we received this heartfelt message from the Eurobodalla Council:
“It was a privilege to have the school’s Indigenous leaders, Savannah and Robert, participate in such a meaningful way. Their speeches and presence were deeply professional and respectful, and they represented your school with pride… It felt especially fitting to have young leaders like Savannah and Robert speak at the ceremony.”
— Sharon Halliday, Events Officer, Eurobodalla Shire Council
Yuin Bunaan – A Day to Remember
On Wednesday, 23 July, students from across the region gathered for the Yuin Bunaan, a vibrant celebration of culture, connection, and community. The day was filled with traditional dance, weaving, painting, sports, damper making, and bush tukka walks. The energy was infectious, and it was heartening to see so many young people engaging so deeply and respectfully with culture.
A huge thank you to the cultural leaders, Elders, volunteers, staff, and community members who made the day possible. The Yuin Bunaan reminded us all of the strength, vision, and legacy that lives on through The Next Generation.
Catholic Education NAIDOC Mass and Visit to Reconciliation Place
On Friday, a group of Indigenous students travelled to Canberra with Mrs Heffernan, Mrs Katuke, Miss Ellis and Mr Nolan to attend the Catholic Education NAIDOC Mass. The liturgy was a moving tribute to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and history, deeply aligned with this year’s theme.
We were incredibly proud to witness three members of our school community recognised for their contributions:
- Robert Slockee – Leadership Award, for his outstanding commitment to cultural education and representation within our school.
- Brooke Bell – Deadly Encouragement Award, for her unwavering effort and dedication.
- Mr Riley Nolan (AEW) – Leadership Award, presented at the South Coast Schools NAIDOC Mass for his passionate work across our K–12 Pathways schools.
Following the Mass, students visited Reconciliation Place, where they explored the stories and symbols that represent the shared journey of all Australians. It was a powerful and unifying experience.
Whole School NAIDOC Liturgy
Today we continued our celebrations as a school community with our NAIDOC Liturgy. This special gathering allowed us to come together in prayer, reflection and celebration, acknowledging the strength, vision, and legacy of our First Nations peoples, and the bright future being built by The Next Generation.
We are proud to walk together, to learn together, and to celebrate together.

Spotlight on SBAT: Learning Beyond the Classroom
This week, we caught up with one of our students who’s taking part in a School-Based Apprenticeship or Traineeship (SBAT) with Raine & Horne Batemans Bay. Every Tuesday, Kaylee steps out of the classroom and into the workplace, gaining hands-on experience in the real estate industry while still completing her studies here at the College. We asked her a few questions about her journey, what she’s learned, and how SBAT is helping shape her future.
Name: Kaylee Lloyd, Year 10
What made you want to do an SBAT, and how did you get started?
I wanted to be able to pursue a career while still being able to attend school.
I spoke with Mrs Dalgleish about my options, and from there, I emailed different businesses to put my interest out there. I was lucky enough to gain employment with Raine & Horne Batemans Bay.
What do you usually do on Tuesdays when you're at your SBAT placement?
- Using the Phone System & completing office tasks
- Key Management
- Screening Checklists
- Going out on inspections
- Learning processes of property management and real estate software.
Would you reccommend doing an SBAT to other students? Why or why not?
I would recommend doing an SBAT because it can give you an early insight of what is involved in this industry as a full-time career. I also get to still attend school with my friends and complete my schooling.
We’d like to thank Raine & Horne Batemans Bay for supporting our students and providing such a valuable learning opportunity. Programs like SBAT help bridge the gap between school and the workforce, and we’re proud to see our students thriving.
