Dear Parents, Students and Friends
It is hard to believe we have arrived at the end of Term 3. And what a term it has been! I commend our students and staff for the way they have embraced remote learning once again. We have been very deliberate with our timetabling and lesson delivery to ensure maximum engagement. I have been very proud of our students. They have maintained high attendance and it’s been my pleasure to pop into classes and be part of Homeroom each day. Well done to all!
Celebrating Year 12…
Naturally this week has been disappointing for our Year 12 students. In a normal year, Year 12 would have celebrated their final day of formal lessons today and enjoyed their farewell Mass, Awards Assembly and Formal. All significant events to mark the end of their final year of schooling. Despite the unusual circumstances we find ourselves in, Year 12 have forged ahead and maintained an optimistic outlook. A credit to them all! We have reenvisaged plans for Term 4 and we are hopeful that all celebrations will go ahead at rescheduled times.
Congratulations to our Year 12 HSC Musicians
Below is an overview of next term for our seniors, specifically Year 12. At this stage, Year 12 will return to school face-to-face on Monday 25 October (Week 4), Year 11 the week after (Week 5), and Years 7-10 on 8 November (Week 6).
So, what are the experts saying about remote learning?
John Hattie slams learning loss rhetoric as 'utterly misleading'
As Professor John Hattie sees it, “contrary to expectations, forecasters, and purveyors of doom” we have actually seen very high levels of “value-added growth” since teaching in COVID began. Amid the negative headlines and talk of widespread learning losses across the country, Hattie wants the narrative to change. Thanks to the expertise of school leaders and teachers, he says, the evidence shows learning trajectories have only marginally decreased during the pandemic. Do you agree it's time that educators own their successes as we work to shake up the ‘old grammar of schooling’?

Industrial Technology HSC Major Works
Last week, we received the news that Mr John O’Neill suffered a heart attack. He is recovering at home and is in good spirits. Mr O’Neill will be off work for some time. In his absence, I have appointed Mrs Erica Drewsen and Mrs Sandra Harris to the role of Assistant Principal, Curriculum. Mrs Drewsen and Mrs Harris will work in a job-share capacity. Please keep Mr O’Neill and his family in your thoughts and prayers at this time.
Term 4 Start Date
All students have received their new remote timetable. This starts on Wednesday 6 October when we return for Term 4. I will be in touch during the holidays if there are any changes to our current circumstances. I wish all families a safe and restful break. I encourage students to limit screen time these holidays and enjoy a variety of activities that don’t involve a computer!
Thank you for your ongoing support.

Infinite power and love
Lord God, we entrust to you the families and communities
affected by Coronavirus, wherever they may be.
We pray especially for health care workers, that you may guide and protect them.
We pray that your Spirit might inspire those researching new medicines and treatments.
And in the midst of this, keep us strong in faith, hope and love. Grant us the
courage and perseverance to be good neighbours.
May the words of your Son Jesus Christ in the Our Father,
be our prayer as we entrust ourselves and all of us who are affected
to your infinite power and love.
Amen.

Assistant Principal Pastoral Care Report
We are very blessed to live, not only in Australia but also in one of the most picturesque parts of the country with opportunities to access long sandy surfing beaches, rivers and mountains. At this time of the year, our native flowers are out in bloom and our amazing birds are in full chorus. All of this is perfectly timed for the school holidays and hopefully an easing of restrictions so we can all move away from our screens and get out and enjoy what we have just outside the door.
Staying connected with our students and families is of great importance to the College especially during lockdown. Each day during our remote learning our Sentral records show the vast amount of contact being made between students, parents and teachers. Each interaction trying to support the well being and learning of our students. Since the last newsletter, and to support our Senior students, we have held two online Year meetings, firstly with Year 12 and the other with Year 11. During these events, the focus has been not only on their well being but also to keep them fully informed of updates to do with NESA exams, curriculum requirements as well as Careers and VET news.
As you know our Year 12 students are experiencing their second lockdown. Their pathway through Senior school has been a challenge. This special group of young people have continued to work hard and support each other. To help them push through to the end, the College has put together a care package for each student. Inside the care package are a range of items to help them prepare but also to share, spoil themselves and smile. Thank you to Mrs Lyttle who initiated this project and for all the staff who helped to get the packages and their contents together.
Our Counsellor Naomi Bee has offered the following five points for us all to consider as we continue to live in lockdown.
- Be kind to yourself
Practise talking to yourself as if you would a friend. Try using positive language.
- Take control of what you can
Ask yourself what is within your control. Even exercising control over small things like tidying your room or choosing to contact friends can increase your sense of wellbeing.
- Random acts of kindness
A small gesture of kindness towards others is another way to increase your sense of control. Sending someone a kind message or even giving a compliment can give us a boost, as well as someone else.
- Self-care activities
Taking even a couple of minutes out of your day for some self-care is still beneficial. Going for a short walk, listening to uplifting music or writing down what has made you happy today can improve how you feel.
- Stay connected
Maintain connections with family, friends and your College community. These connections can improve your well-being. If you need support, please reach out. There is always someone to talk to.
With our community vaccination rates rising we are all looking forward to being able to return to onsite learning. For some of our students, this return may seem a little daunting and a source of anxiety as they approach reconnecting with their peers and teachers in person. Here are some useful links that explore how parents can support their children to return after Covid lockdown.

Finally, Harley and Rose are missing you all. Here is a photo of them enjoying the afternoon sunshine.
Wishing everyone a restful break,

Assistant Principal Curriculum Report
As I write this article for Week 10 of Term 3, I am conscience of the events and celebrations that this week traditionally holds for Carroll College that have had to be put on hold for the moment. Week 10 in the life of Carroll College usually includes final lesson celebrations with Year 12 students and their teachers, the commissioning of the new Senior Leadership Team, the Year 12 Graduation Mass and Awards Assembly followed by the Guard of Honour as Year 12 left the premises to head off to a shared lunch. It is a wonderful week in the life of our school community.
I think staff, students and parents alike are mourning somewhat that this year is different. In my discussion with Year 12 students, they are naturally saddened by not being able to have these experiences – yet. The celebrations will happen, just not as they have happened in previous years.
The loss of the ‘usual’ way of doing things reminds us of the importance of tradition and routine and how they contribute to the identity of a community. When traditions are not able to be performed, there is a sense of disconnect or disruption to the norm.
Of course, Year 12 students are sensing this very acutely at the moment, but I acknowledge that so too are many of us in the Carroll College community at the moment. We can think about things in terms of what we are missing out on, however, we can also think of this time in terms of it reminding us of what it is we truly value about this school community. This time of challenge reminds us that we value supportive relationships, interactive learning environments, collaboration, shared experiences and quite simply being together. This time apart reminds us of the wonderful, collegial community Carroll College is and how much we value being part of this place.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank our teachers and support staff for their tireless work over the past month of remote learning. Staff have been incredibly dedicated to the care of their students both academically and pastorally. I hope and trust that the students and parents have experienced the diligence of staff in preparing valuable lessons and learning opportunities. There is an enormous amount of time that goes in to preparing remote lessons and I thank staff for their professionalism.
Thank you also, to our parent community for your efforts at home with your children. Successful schools are schools where staff, students and parents all work together to achieve the best outcomes for the child. Remote learning has certainly brought parents into the secondary school environment like never before. I appreciate how difficult this environment has been for families. Many of our staff are juggling parent responsibilities whilst teaching your children. It is a delicate balancing act. Thank you for all you have done to support your child/children with their learning. It has been an enormous team effort from everyone within the Carroll College community.
Year 12 HSC Support
Over the term break, arrangements are being made to provide all Year 12 students completing an ATAR with access to additional HSC support. InspirationEd (formerly HSC in the Holidays) is a company that has been providing HSC support for students and teachers since 2005. Our Year 12 students will have access to live sessions, on-demand videos, practice exams and HSC4Me an interactive learning app. See below for more information about what our students will be afforded in October to support them in their final weeks of preparation for the HSC exams.

To celebrate what would have been the last day for Year 12 2021 the staff at Carroll College put together “Care Packages” for each student. Year 12 were invited in to the school today to drive by and pick up their packages while complying with social distancing rules. It was wonderful to see the students face to face for just a minute as they were handed their packages through their car windows. We hope that they enjoy their gifts and that these treats help them get through an extra few weeks of study and their HSC next term. We wish them all the best and can’t wait to celebrate with them more fully towards the end of the year.

Our Year 12 Hospitality students have been busy finishing their last tasks and training packages for this term. Students had to complete a cooking training assessment at home.
Meg Phillips taught her dad Darren and partner Nellie how to make pork dumplings. It was great to see the video that Meg put together “Training” them. There was extra washing of hands, kitchen terms such as “Mise en place”, Brunoise and towels under chopping boards so they stayed in place on the bench. The recipe was such a hit with the family I have attached the recipe link for you to cook in the holidays. We also cooked this recipe with Year 11 Hospitality students today.

Year 11 have been cooking up a storm making their Lemon Meringue pies for their families.
Charlize Cramer taught her family to make a lemon meringue pie which by the evidence shown looked fantastic. The recipe is attached and is very easy to make.
It was lovely seeing some of the Year 11’s coming into our Teams meeting to cook, a picture of Takiya Norris' lemon meringue pie that she kindly made for her elderly Aunt is below.
Mrs Kenna and I wish you all a lovely school holiday break. It may not be quite the same as normal with restrictions still in place but a well-earned break for our students. We hope you all get out and enjoy the beautiful spring weather and watch the whales migrating.
Regards Mrs Kenna and Ms Garland

YR 12 VET STUDENTS - TAKE NOTE
Just as a reminder - Students will be able to access their VET Statement of Attainment Certificates or Certificate II in qualification through your schools online account on the 24th of January. It is the only way to access this Certificate as there will be no mail out of certificates. The school does not receive any certificates from NESA. Student accounts close 30th June next year and then fee payment is required if students need to get this record after this date. Students are advised to access their schools online account and download their certificate as soon as it is available then save them in your personal files for future use.
UAC Key Dates - Update
Admissions 2022 date changes
On Friday 10 September a revised timetable for HSC examinations and results was released. As a consequence, the following UAC dates will change:
- ATARs for NSW HSC students will now be released at 9am on Thursday 20 January 2022.
- ATARs for ACT Year 12 students will now be released at 9am on Thursday 20 January 2022.
- January Round 2 will now be the first ATAR-based offer round. The deadline for changing preferences for January Round 2 will be midnight on Friday 21 January 2022.
- January Round 2 offers will be released at 7.30am on Wednesday 26 January 2022.
Changes to other UAC dates will be confirmed as soon as possible, as will the arrangements for ACT ATARs.
Information for NSW and ACT students applying interstate, and interstate students applying to NSW and ACT universities, will also follow.
Educational Access Schemes
- EAS application and document deadline for January Round 2 will be midnight Friday 17 December 2021.
- EAS eligibility letters will be released progressively from Friday 21 January 2022 to all applicants with finalised assessment for January Round 2.
Early bird closing
Students are encouraged to apply as soon as possible. Early bird applications close at midnight on Thursday 30 September, after which UAC’s processing charge increases.
If students aren’t sure about what they want to study, they can submit an application to any course and change their preferences as many times as they like, for free. Year 12 applicants can also 'commit to pay' using BPAY or Post Billpay. Payment must be made, however, in order to have their application assessed and receive an offer.
Early offer schemes
While the ATAR is still the main selection tool used by most unis, there are other ways for students to show that they're ready to succeed at tertiary study.
Many institutions have early offer schemes for Year 12 students. Through these schemes the institutions will assess students using criteria other than (or in addition to) their ATAR.
The closing date for UAC's Schools Recommendation Scheme (SRS) is this Sunday 19 September and the first offers will be released on Friday 12 November. We've created a three-minute video guide on how to apply for SRS.
Kind Regards
Naomi Gill

Term 3 fee statements were emailed on 22 July with a due date of Friday 13 August. Thank you to families who have made payments. Any recent payments will be receipted shortly.
Any families currently who have submitted a Fee Concession Application, your application process is currently still underway.
Covid-19 Fee Assistance Term 3
Catholic Education and Carroll College will support families who have been financially impacted as a result of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic in Term 3, 2021. Where your family is experiencing financial stress due to job loss, being stood down, reduction in work hours, business downturn or closure resulting from the Covid-19 pandemic, full or partial fee relief is available in Term 3. Please complete the Covid-19 Fee Assistance Request Form and you will be asked to provide supporting documentation. Please contact the Business Manager via email Rhonda.forner@cg.catholic.edu.au
It is important to seek this assistance as soon as possible this term, as it is only available in Term 3.
Managing your Fees
The College recommends a regular payment approach to managing your school fees and to reduce the financial burden that delaying fee payments may cause. For example, a regular weekly or fortnightly payment through Direct Debit, BPay or Qkr! can assist in managing your school fees. The 2021 Fee Schedule is available on the Carroll College website – Enrolment/Fees. In this section of the website, there is also a Fee Calculator to assist families in determining fee payment amounts in managing their school fee payments. If you are unable to pay off your school fees in full by the end of the year, you will need to setup a Fee Agreement with the College. A fee agreement assists both the College and families in managing school fees. Please contact our finance team via finance.ccb@cg.catholic.edu.au to obtain Fee Agreement Form.
Fee Assistance – Concession Application
Currently enrolled families facing significant financial difficulty are able to apply for fee assistance. Fee assistance is income based and requires supporting documentation. You may be asked to meet to discuss aspects of your application and will be required to provide supporting documentation. Fee assistance can include:
- a payment plan (extends the payment period to 12 months and commits families to make ongoing payments to pay off school fees by the end of the school year)
- an extended payment plan (extends the payment period to greater than 12 months and commits families to make ongoing payments to pay off school fees over an approved, extended period of time)
- Fee Concession – partial reduction of fees and payment plan
- Fee Concession – full reduction of fees
Fee assistance is an annual application process based on your circumstances. In some situations, any reductions may be reviewed on a term by term basis, which would then require separate applications including supporting documentation at the start of each term. Where your circumstances improve during the school year, the College relies on families to get in touch, so that your fee assistance can be adjusted accordingly and the College is able to provide support to other families requiring assistance.
Government grants provide part of the funding required to operate the College. The balance of operating costs are funded through school fees. The ongoing operations of the College are dependent on parents paying the required level of fees. Every effort will be made by the College to recover fees from parents who are deemed to have the capacity to pay fees.
On the basis of the information provided in the Fee Assistance Form, the Fee Committee will determine an appropriate level of fee support based upon guidelines agreed to by Catholic Education Archdiocese of Canberra and Goulburn and Carroll College. The Fee Committee reviews fee assistance applications once per term, in the latter half of the term. Applicants will be then be advised of the outcome via email and letter. Please sign a copy of this letter and return via the envelope provided to the College. Following receipt of signed agreement letter, the concession will then be applied to your fees. Where you are granted a partial reduction in school fees with a payment plan, it is necessary that you commit to maintaining your payment plan. Where you are on a payment plan or extended payment plan, it is important to maintain those ongoing payments. If you need to change your payment plan arrangements, please get in touch with College as soon as practicable.
Change in Circumstances – Request for Split Billing
Where there has been a change to your family circumstances and you require split billing, this creates a variation to your school fee obligations from initial enrolment. Please request the Split Billing Request Form which needs to be signed and dated by both parents/guardians to take effect. This form requires parents to indicate the percentage split for fees and acknowledges your obligations relating to fees, levies and charges incurred while your child is enrolled at the College. Please contact our finance team via finance.ccb@cg.catholic.edu.au to obtain a Split Billing Request Form.
All information is treated and maintained confidentially.
If you require fee assistance, please contact Rhonda Forner, Business Manager by email at Rhonda.Forner@cg.catholic.edu.au

When finalising payments on Qkr, please make sure to finalise anything that is in the cart on the top right-hand corner. If the cart is not empty and you do not have a receipt, this means the payment and consent has not been finalised. This includes any events or excursions that only require permission (eg. swimming consent notes). Once you have signed the permission note you will still need to ‘checkout’ at the end of the process to ensure the permission note is finalised. Thank you!
