Term 2 is usually a very busy one, with students engaged heavily in their academic and extracurricular activities. As a Catholic community, it is essential that we support and guide our students to remain focused and committed to their end goals so that they achieve their very best.
In 2020 there will be a Plenary Council to discuss the future of the Catholic Church in Australia. The journey toward the Plenary Council will help us to prepare to listen to God by listening to one another. All people are invited to engage, to be a part of the listening and dialogue encounter in the next two years. Each of us is called as children of God to respond to Pope Francis’s invitation to become a “synodal” Church – a Church of faith-filled people who speak boldly and with passion, and who listen deeply with an open and humble heart.
The first part of the Plenary Council was held at St Bernard’s, Batehaven, on Pentecost Sunday. The focus of the day was engagement with young people and the Church. The reality of young people’s views on the church was heard and very honest feedback was given to the group on the behalf of students from Carroll, discussing how they feel their relationship with the church is. If you have any thoughts or ideas about how we can improve engagement within our Parish Communities, please contact me at the College and I can relay this information. I would encourage all members of our Catholic Community to be involved in this exciting event and to have your voice heard.
Enrolment interviews have begun for Year 7 2019. We encourage any interested families who have not yet returned their enrolment applications to do so as soon as possible as enrolment interviews have already begun. If you have returned your form and not yet heard from the College, please contact Nadine Cooper to arrange an appointment.
Two weeks ago our Catholic Community was led by our College Captain, Matthew Klarica and Vice-Captain, Lavinia Stokes in the ANZAC Remembrance Service, put together by Charlotte Nicoletti, Religious Education Coordinator. Matthew and Lavinia led a respectful service that gave tribute to the sacrifices that have been made by communities throughout the many wars that Australia has been involved in. Keith Brewster, from Batemans Bay Soldiers Club, gave a heartfelt speech to students about the RSL movement and how it continues to support all Returned Service Personnel in Australia. At the end of the service, a moving musical tribute remembering the spirit of ANZAC was performed. Thank you, Ros Maher and all music students who put this together for the College Community.
During the past fortnight, students across Year 7 and 9 have been participating in NAPLAN. The College in 2018 was requested to be a part of the NAPLAN Online Trial. This involves the students at Carroll completing all their NAPLAN testing online. NAPLAN at this time of the year receives considerable media attention about standardised testing and its value for education. At Carroll we use NAPLAN data in conjunction with class tests, teacher assessments and end of Semester testing to determine student’s growth and measure their learning. NAPLAN contributes to the measuring of student growth in their learning, allowing the College to compare student achievement to other students in the country and other similar schools. If you require any further information on NAPLAN and how it is used, please feel free to contact the College.
Excursions and Sporting Events are always a highlight for students at Carroll. As parents are aware Qkr! is the preferred payment option for all events and where parent permission can be granted for all events. Notices for excursion and sporting events are emailed to parents in advance of the event and where possible reminders are sent as well. Due to the booking of facilities and buses, some of these events have strict permission deadlines that need to be met. It will greatly assist the College if these deadlines could be met and it will avoid the College having to cancel sporting teams and excursions due to low return rates of payment and reply slips.

Yesterday, Sunday 20 May, was Pentecost Sunday – the Church’s birthday. The word Pentecost is Greek and means “50th day”. Fifty days after Easter Sunday and 10 days after the Ascension of Jesus, we celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit. Pentecost launches the spreading of the Gospel. Through Pentecost we are all called to mission, to be filled with the Holy Spirit and bare witness. Each of us is called to be Christ for the world.
I concluded my last newsletter article with ‘… the love of teachers for their vocation’. For teachers our mission and our calling is our vocation. For vocation comes from the Latin term ‘vocare’, which means to call. We have been called to ministry, to the profession of teaching. I fondly recall the Australia Day address delivered by Mathematics teacher Eddie Woo, who was named Australia’s local hero for 2018. Eddie spoke to the vocation that calls us and keeps us in teaching. In Catholic schools, our primacy is faith formation and our duty is to prepare faithful and inclusive young people for the dynamic world beyond their schooling life. Teaching is the genuine service of others; we are privileged and take the responsibility of working with families to grow happy, whole, informed and intelligent young adults seriously. Jesus calls each of us to action, to be filled with the Holy Spirit and to live the Good News through our vocation.
Youth Ministry is a post school pathway which allows young people to enter into participation in the broader Church. The Church in all her wisdom teaches us that when we take up God’s call upon our lives, it is then that we will fully recognise our vocation and the potential it has to shape the face of Christ’s Church today. At the Catholic Church’s announcement of the ‘Year of Faith’ in 2013, Pope Benedict XVI called for a reawakening of faith for all Catholics; young and old, practising and nominal. This would be “achieved through the witness offered by the lives of believers”. At CCB we are fortunate to have Youth Minister Jarryd Atkinson walk alongside our students in their faith journey. However, I am often asked by the students... “Who is Jarryd?” and “What does he actually do?”
Therefore I asked some students to interview Jarryd.
5 MINUTES WITH JARRYD ATKINSON
What do you see as a challenge of your position?
I'd say that there are sooo many things I’d love to achieve or be involved in, but not enough time to get everything!
What are the highlights of your role?
Retreats, chatting with young people, giving talks and presentations on topics that I am passionate about, and ultimately being able to share my faith and identity in Christ with a vibrant and welcoming community such as that at Carroll College.
What sustains your faith?
Prayer - I try and weave prayer into my life as much as possible; while I'm driving, while I'm hiking or swimming etc. and debates - I love having discussions with people and being presented with new perspectives and ideas.
What kind of music do you listen to?
I listen to all sorts of music! Pretty much anything besides Country and Western. I love acts such as RUFUS, Flight Facilities, Ben Howard, Above & Beyond, as well as classics such as Crowded House, Fleetwood Mac and Phil Collins.
What are some of your favourite hobbies?
I love working on my 1977 Toyota Celica Coupe, keeping up to date with new movies, going hiking and for nature walks, swimming (and I’ve just recently taken up snorkelling!), camping, building computers and playing video games.
What is your message to young people?
To be open - be open to learning new things, open to forming new relationships, open to loving everyone to the best of your ability and open to the role faith can play in your life.

Excursion to Australian War Memorial
On the 3rd and 4th of May the Year Nine History classes travelled up to Canberra to visit The Australian War Memorial as a part of the unit they have started, ‘Australians in War’. The day was a great success and was highly informative for the students, as it helped prepare them for an upcoming assignment where they are required to design their own museum exhibition.
We started the day off by entering the War Memorial through the schools entrance. We then watched a video about the importance of the War Memorial and how important it is to remember the people who fought and died for their countries. After watching the video, we then split up into our classes and went to look through the exhibits of World War One, World War Two and the remembrance hall. Throughout the War Memorial there were a lot of amazing models that were built by veterans from these wars and battles. The exhibits were very interesting and the new technology that they had installed in these exhibits made it even more engaging.
A highlight for us when we were at the Australian War Memorial, was inside the Hall of Memorial, the Hall of Memorial is centered around a tomb of an unknown soldier who served in World War One, this place was significant for us because it was so peaceful and the way it had been designed with the stained glass windows and mosaic walls left us awestruck.
We are also reminded that the Australian War Memorial and its content is still relevant in Australian society, because of the Roll of Honour that is covered in poppies, the more recent conflicts (the Afghanistan and Iraqi Wars) that have been added to the wall being covered in more poppies. Going to the War Memorial is a poignant reminder of all the veterans who have served for our country.
We would like to thank our teachers for giving up their time and taking us to the War Memorial, a special thanks goes to Mrs. Enfield for planning out the day for us.

On Tuesday the 8th of May, Carroll College participated in the Giants Open Boys AFL Competition. We played two games. Our first game was against Batemans Bay. We started off a little slow and took a while to find our feet. By this time the Bay had scored a few quick goals. To our credit we stepped up our game and matched the Bay’s intensity as the game progressed. We were in the game after a few quick goals from Buster Ware. It came down to the last few minutes and unfortunately the Bay pipped us 37 to 22. We versed Moruya in the second game. Our confidence was starting to build and we scored a couple of early goals thanks to some great work on the ball by our ruckmen and forwards. Our defence held tight and Moruya were having trouble scoring. In the end we ran out clear winners 45-20. Unfortunately, the Bay beat Moruya and they progressed to the finals to be played in Canberra at a later date. All our players tried their best against some formidable opponents. Some highlights were – Stuart Megee’s tenacity when chasing the loose ball, Angus Turner’s dominance in the middle under the high ball, Cadyn Argent’s accurate ball striking throughout, Luke Barnicott’s tacking skills and the M.V.P’s had to go to Jonah Slockee-Albert and Buster Ware. Jonah must have run the distance of a marathon during the game, chasing down loose balls, tackling opponents and weaving in and out of the defence. Buster Ware also led by example on the field, dominating the ruck, gaining more possessions than any other player and also was our leading goal scorer.
The team consisted of – Declan Cursio, Jack Davis, Stuart Megee, Angus Patmore, Jack Newton, Billy Williams, Liam DuField, Caydn Argent, Jonah Slockee-Albert, Luke Barnicott, Charlie Valentini, Wayde Van Weerdenburg, Christian Filmer, Angus Turner, Ryan Foley, Harry Shannon, Brandon I’Anson, Buster Ware and Lachlan Knight.
Also Thanks to Mr Wheatley for helping out on the day.

The Open Girls AFL team travelled to Kyla Park in Tuross on Tuesday 8th May to play in the Giants Cup. The competition on the day was tough with the team played well contested games against both Eden and Bega High Schools. Unfortunately, the girls did not progress through to the next round, however they played exceptionally well and displayed great teamwork and sportsmanship. The team consisted of a mixture of experienced players and some new to AFL. Special mentions must go to Carola Sartore, Lavinia Stokes and Pearl Mitchell who made their AFL debuts and surprised many with their enthusiasm and skill levels. Stand out players on the day were, Zalie Betts, Holly Gschwend working hard in the ruck, Charlotte Walker and Grace Blackmore with excellent defensive play. Well done to all the girls involved, they were great ambassadors for the College.
Team list: Emily Brennan, Nikki-Leigh Francis, Maddy Jeffery, Marissa Barry, Lily McPherson, Phoebe Sharp, Maya Hughes, Hollie Betts, Holly Gschwend, Zali Betts, Destinee Zischka, Grace Blackmore, Anna Rogerson, Georgia Norman, Lavinia Stokes, Pearl Mitchelle, Carola Sartore and Charlotte Walker.
