Welcome back to all of our students and families
A very special welcome in Term 2 to all of our new students and their families. You have become part of a great Catholic community that is full of fantastic students, passionate staff and a very supportive parent group. I also welcome back all of our current students and their families.
As you are aware there have been many changes since the end of Term 1. Steve Bath, Principal, has been asked to work with the Catholic Education Office in the areas of Child Protection and School and Family Services for 2018. This is a fantastic professional opportunity that will allow professional growth and benefit the College for years to come. We wish him the very best and will welcome him back in 2019. I additionally congratulate the following staff in their appointments:
Veronica Harrold-Carter - Assistant Principal, Pastoral Care for 2018
Corrinne Dell - Xavier Pastoral Leader for 2018
Sean Mulally - Pastoral Assistant for 2018
Simon Blue – Science Coordinator for Term 2
We welcome a number of new staff to our community.
Laura Wales – Humanities, English and RE
Abbey Blacka – RE and Humanities
Matthew Flavell - Science
Jade Nicholls - PE
During the holidays a number of students participated in ANZAC commemorative services across the Eurobodalla both at Dawn Services and ANZAC Marches. The venues included Batemans Bay, Tomakin, Moruya, Narooma and Tuross Head. The variety of venues demonstrates that our College is truly representative of the whole Eurobodalla. All of the students represented the College with pride and the authentic respect that they demonstrated is admirable.
Last week I had the great pleasure of accompanying a group of Carroll College students to the “Bullying. No Way!” workshops presented by Peter Slattery. This workshop explored aspects of why bullying happens, can it be prevented and what do we do if it happens. It gave a voice to a variety of community groups and young people allowing them to speak openly about bullying but most of all it focussed upon the importance of relationships. I thank Eurobodalla Shire Council for hosting and highly recommend parents to attend if it occurs again. The workshop further informed us all of the consequences of bullying on the lives of those involved.
As a Catholic College we have a deep sense of social justice and follow in the teaching of Christ. Bullying has no place at Carroll College, we are a strong Catholic community that builds and fosters positive relationships. Sometimes conflict causes weakness in the relationships we have with each other but as Jesus taught us, we reach out to repair the damage caused by conflict, we make amends and live in his example. We live as God would want us to live. We always work in partnership with parents and students to ensure any inappropriate behaviour is dealt with quickly and effectively. Our procedures on bullying are very simple as outlined below:
- If you witness or receive bullying tell the person to stop, and their behaviour is inappropriate.
- Report any bullying to the Pastoral Staff.
- Bullying will be dealt with.
Please always contact the Pastoral Leader at the College if your child discloses to you anything you believe we are not aware of, no matter how trivial it may seem.

Welcome back to the new term. I trust that our students had a relaxing and refreshing break and that parents might have had the chance to wind down themselves.
Term One was a busy one and Term Two promises much of the same. The term began with our whole teaching staff involved in a Staff Development Day. We shared ideas, reflected on programmes, created teaching resources and prepared pedagogical approaches to improve our students learning and engagement. The need for teachers to work collaboratively, learn from one another and reflect on their teaching practices was reiterated in an article I read recently by Dr. C. Wattam “your job and mine, as teachers in a Catholic school, is to make explicit that which calls us to provide a liberating education. Every learning experience you provide is an opportunity. It is a gem of an opportunity – to engage, to arouse curiosity, to provide the tools for the future and to inspire a child to want to know more. To want to be a better human being, and to want to make an active contribution to the world in which they live. So they might make it a better place in which to live. We can only do this if we subscribe to a theology of hope.”
We also welcomed Mrs. Laura Wales and Mrs. Abbey Blacka to the Religious Education Department and look forward to their contribution to the success of our dynamic department.
This week the College holds its Open Information Evening, celebrates Mothers at our annual Mother’s Day Breakfast and we commemorate ANZAC Day with a service during assembly.
Fittingly, today’s reading is from the Gospel of John.
Jesus said to his disciples: ‘I have loved you just as the Father has loved me. Remain in my love. …this is my commandment: love one another as I have loved you. No one can have greater love than to lay down his life for his friends. You are my friends … I call you friends… you did not choose me, no, I chose you… my command to you is to love one another’.
There is no greater love than the love God has for us, the love a mother has for her child(ren), the love of soldiers for their country, for freedom and the love of teachers for their vocation.
