VET/Careers News

Work Placements

VET Work placements are on hold due to COVID-19. NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) has released the following: Students undertaking VET courses in 2020 will remain eligible for the Preliminary or HSC credit units if unable to complete work placement.

Students commencing a 240-hour, 300-hour or 360-hour VET course in 2020 that has a mandatory work placement requirement, who will continue the course in 2021, will meet the course requirement if they complete 35 hours of work placement. For most courses this is a reduced requirement. It is anticipated that the placement could be completed later in 2020, or in 2021.

Curriculum Expo

Friday 24th July Carroll College held the Year 11 2021 Curriculum Expo. Hospitality students demonstrated their barista skills by making hot chocolates for all in attendance.

What is happening in class?

Business Services

Over the course of the year, students have continued working toward achieving a Certificate II in Business Services. Recent units completed include Communicate electronically, Develop keyboard speed and accuracy and Produce simple word documents.

The students are continuing to develop the skills and knowledge required in the office space. The Communicate electronically unit provided the students a real insight into email etiquette and the do’s and don'ts of what is accepted in a professional working environment. It was often said to the students, ‘once it is sent you must consider where it may end up.’

Information Digital Media Technology

Currently in Year 11 students are learning the design concepts and coding for creating websites.  Students are learning to code using a computer language called HTML (Hypertext Markup Language).  This allows them to understand the coding in which all websites are based upon.

This week has a focus on creating menu bars and navigation, scrolling text and using styling sheets that allows the colour schemes of a website to be quickly changed, regardless of how many pages the website has.

Construction

Year 11 VET Construction students have been finalising the first 4 core modules of the course and most students have managed to keep up the with theory content which is an important foundation for future learning. Units studied have included; WHS, Working effectively and sustainably in the construction industry, Read and Interpret Plans and Specifications and Use Carpentry Tools and Equipment.

Students have completed the workshop drawing for the Tool Carry All project which should be completed by the end of this term. This project aims to teach students about attention to detail and how to use construction hand tools safely and effectively. We intend to complete the Measurement and Calculations and Workplace Communication units this term also so it’s looking to be a busy but rewarding term.

Year 12 Construction are developing micro skills in the use of power tools constructing tool boxes with alternative processes, to engage in a wider range of tools and equipment for the industry.

Sport Coaching

Year 11 spent the majority of term 2 learning about and coaching netball. This will continue into this term and hopefully restrictions on work placements will be lifted soon to enable these students to showcase their learned skills in the wider community.

Year 12 will be endeavoring to start a competitive Basketball competition for students and staff over the next few weeks. The draw will be released this week and games will be played at AM breaks in the hall. Keep an eye out on sentral notices for further information.

Hospitality

Year 11 Hospitality were able to showcase their skills by making and serving hot chocolates to Year 10 students and teachers at the Curriculum Expo. It was wonderful to see the students looking professional in their uniforms.
