Assistant Principal Pastoral Care Report

Student Leadership

Our students are very lucky to have great role models in our College, Indigenous, Faith and House Captains who set great examples of positively taking part in College representation and other activities.

This term Year 11 students will begin their leadership journey. In their admin lesson last week students were spoken to by Mrs Heffernan and myself about leadership attributes and qualities that are looked for in students at Carroll College. The process of applying and positions available were discussed with applications being due Friday 31 July at 12 pm.

Students can apply for positions of leadership as:

  • College Captain
  • College Vice-Captain
  • Indigenous Captain
  • House Captain
  • A leader in Faith Formation

All of these positions follow a similar process for selection and shortlisting occurs at each stage of the process. The selection criteria is a balance of:

  • A written application
  • A speech to peers (for College Captain only)
  • A preference indication by Year 11 students and staff (for College Captain only)
  • An interview.

Last year there were many applications with over 30 individual indications for positions of leadership. It is fantastic to see how many students were willing to put themselves forward to become a leader and develop their potential. We look forward to many applications in 2020 from Year 11.

Senior Students and attendance

Could parents please ensure that the Front Office is notified by 9.00 am about senior students who must leave the College during the day for a medical appointment. All appointments when possible should be made outside of school hours and students must remain onsite for all of their timetabled periods throughout the day. The exception for this is Year 12 students who have indicated on their driving forms that they can leave after their last lesson of the day.

There has recently been an increase in the number of ad-hoc requests to leave the College during the day which will affect students attendance and legal requirements to attend school. Medical certificates may be requested for students who frequently request to leave during the day to authorise the absence. Thank you for your cooperation with this.
