Dear Families,

We have had a busy start to HSIE lessons this term.

Year 8 students have started to learn about Polynesian Expansion in the Pacific and will link their learning to a film study and a study of Polynesian culture.

Year 9 students have started their study of World Wars 1 and 2, with a fantastic workshop delivered by Shane Blackman from  'Living History'. Students were able to interact with artefacts and learn about their uses during both world wars.

Year 10 students have just begun their depth study of 'Human Wellbeing'. Throughout this topic students will investigate the geographical factors that influence human wellbeing on a global, national and a local scale. Currently Year 10 students are  working on their assessment task for this topic, incorporating a case study into a contemporary wellbeing issue.

Our Year 9 and 10 Commerce students are learning about moving towards independence, with a focus on housing, education, employment and transport.

Year 9 and 10 World History students are studying Greek Mythology.

Year 11 Geography students supplemented their learning of deforestation with a first-hand look at a nearby subdivision. Students examined loss of flora and fauna, changes to elevation and drainage patterns, bearings of new blocks, and differences in temperature between the newly cleared land and remaining bush.

Year 12 Geography students are conducting regular fieldwork at the moment to assist them in preparation for the HSC and also the linking of fieldwork to theory.

We have some really great learning opportunities coming up for our students, so watch this space.

Kind regards,

Ms Linda Dwyer
