The HSIE team have had a busy start to Term 2 with Miss Montana Price, Ms Elle Boller and Mrs Dwyer putting together the ANZAC assembly.

Carroll College students and staff gathered on Thursday, 1 May, for a moving Anzac Day assembly to honour the courage, sacrifice and enduring spirit of Australian and New Zealand servicemen and women. The assembly was led by the Student Leadership Team, with support from the Student Representative Council and Year 11 and 12 Modern History students.

Students solemnly delivered the Anzac Requiem, as well as Australian poet Robert McCall’s work A Hundred Years From Now. An extract can be read below:

“When the playing of the bugle sent a shiver down my spine,
When I felt a sense of duty and stepped up to join the line,
A song was sung, my heart was young, the ship it sailed away,
When my mother stood there crying and I had no words to say,
When I wore my country’s coat of arms to pledge a solemn vow,
I didn’t think they’d honour me a hundred years from now.”

The highlight of the commemorative service was a powerful address delivered by guest speaker Mr Gary Donoghue, Vietnam Veteran and Honorary Treasurer of the Returned and Services League Moruya Sub-Branch. Mr Donoghue eloquently emphasised the significance of women’s involvement in Australia’s military history, an aspect which is often overlooked. Our utmost gratitude is extended to Gary for his presence on this important occasion.

Students from the Modern History classes created, edited and presented a video exploring what Anzac Day means to young Australians today. A second video tribute honoured family members of the Carroll College community who have served in the armed forces, both past and present. Miss Price and I would like to thank all of the families that submitted photos for our memory display.

The service concluded with the formalities, including the laying of the wreath, the Ode of Remembrance, The Last Post and the National Anthem. This powerful assembly reminded all present of the importance of remembering the past and carrying forward the values and legacy of the Anzacs. Thank you to our College community for their involvement in preparing for this assembly. All students are commended for their reverence throughout the service. Our appreciation is also extended to all students who were involved in Anzac marches and services throughout the Eurobodalla during the holidays. Thank you for representing the College with pride.

On Tuesday, our Year 9 students participated in a workshop with Shane Blackman from Living History. Shane travels around the state visiting schools and sharing his knowledge of World Wars 1 and 2 with students. His workshops are interactive and students are able to touch artefacts and weapons from the period. This was an excellent opportunity for our students and they all benefitted from this learning experience.
  • Year 8 are currently studying colonisation of Australia and the Pacific.
  • Year 9 have just started their core study of Australian's at War: World Wars 1 and 2.
  • Year 10 have begun their second Geography Topic: Human Wellbeing.
Our Year 11 students are well into their preliminary courses and our Year 12 are half way through their HSC topics.

We have many subject specific learning opportunities coming up in further newsletters.
