Year 9 and 10 Food Technology

Shilling_Miriam.jpg
The four Year 9/10 Food Technology students have been studying 'Food in Australia'. As part of this course, they have learnt about indigenous foods.
We were privileged to have our new Aboriginal Education Officer, Riley Nolan, give us a bush food tour of the area around our college. Students learnt about lomandra and how it's seeds can be made into bread. He spoke about fire stick farming and using banksia to burn the undergrowth of the bush to encourage kangaroos to graze, (and then be hunted), and provide a place for propagating yams. We learnt about golden wattle and how its flowers tell us when the whales are on the coast and the fish are running. We learnt that the South Coast has an abundance of food in our oceans, as well as some tips to make fishing a little bit easier. Carroll College is lucky to have the knowledge of Trish Ellis and Riley and to share their cultural insights with our students.
