It’s been another busy and rewarding fortnight for the HSIE department, with students venturing into the local area to gain valuable hands-on experience that brings their classroom learning to life.

Year 12 Geography
As part of the Rural and Urban Places unit, the HSC Geography class undertook fieldwork at Mogo.
The course requires students to identify and describe the factors that shape and link rural and urban settings, including villages.
The fieldwork provided the students the opportunity to identify the number and types of businesses in Mogo and the recent challenges and responses.
The students also met and surveyed some of the business owners in Mogo.

Year 11 Geography
As part of our study of the Earth and its Environment, Year 11 Geography students kayaked the Tomaga River between Mossy Point and Tomakin with RegionX. We looked at the expansive and fairly healthy mangrove system, the sand dunes on the spit and the path of least resistance that the river takes. Students were also challenged to look at the human impacts, like the different ecology around the stormwater drain, and the dune degradation possibly leading to a new river mouth. Students were keen to discuss some sustainable approaches and work with organisations like ESC, RegionX and Landcare to help maintain the Tomaga River and its environment.

Year 8 HSIE
Year 8 had the incredible opportunity to experience Medieval History firsthand with a visit from James Adams of Historic Enterprises. His captivating and interactive presentation brought the medieval period to life, immersing students in the customs, warfare and daily experiences of the past.

Students eagerly took part in the hands-on activities, trying on authentic replicas of Saxon, Viking and Norman armour, as well as experiencing historical punishments like the scold’s bridle and the pillory. Year 8 gained a deeper understanding of Medieval life through these immersive experiences.

Adding to the excitement, some students were able to research their family coat of arms, uncovering fascinating connections with their classmates. This engaging and informative session not only enriched their historical knowledge but also sparked curiosity about their own heritage and the social structures of the time.
