CCB has been providing lots of engaging activities and events for the students this term. We had plenty of excitement in the last few weeks when Year 7 and 11 students conquered the camp at Lake Tabourie. The Peer Support Program began in Academic Care in Week 4 with Year 7 meeting the Year 11 and establishing connections. The students were challenged to communicate in a number of icebreaker games and it was really impressive to see the Year 11 leaders help the Year 7 students throughout this experience.
When schools can boost student wellbeing, young people benefit from improved self-esteem, stronger friendships and healthier relationships. We saw this during the camp and the incredible leadership that our Year 11 students provided was commendable.
The ‘TomorrowWoman’ Australian website (2024) discussed the following: Data from the Australian Council for Educational Research shows that school-based wellbeing programs have the same impact on academic results as an additional three months of learning.
A student with good wellbeing is better able to study. They can come to the classroom calm, relaxed and able to pay attention to what’s being taught. They can concentrate for longer. And, they are more likely to find the subject matter interesting since their headspace is clear.
They also have the ability to set study goals, the energy to create exam revision plans and the emotional resilience to keep going even if they get a bad mark. And of course, a student who feels well is more likely to attend school.
I look forward to the events we will continue to provide for our students until the end of Term 1. 'Harmony Week' in Week 7 was a hit with lots of different foods on offer to share during AM break. Our Captains' Corner this week features the Indigenous Captains - Savannah McGann and Robert Slockee who have been very busy participating in 'Close the Gap' and 'Harmony Day', and leading the students in driving fundraising for Caritas!
