Wellbeing Coordinator
It has been a jam-packed start to our new year, particularly in the Wellbeing area. The students were welcomed back by the SLT in our whole school assembly that focused on setting goals and doing our best to achieve them. In Week 2, we recognised Safer Internet Day. It reminds students and staff that whether you’re working, learning, playing or scrolling – the internet is a huge part of life. It opens a world of opportunities, but also comes with risks, especially for young people and other at-risk groups.
The SLT sold pretty red carnations from local Joycie’s Florist to students for Valentine's Day. Students had the opportunity to purchase a carnation for someone in the College and the SLT delivered these to the receiver during Homeroom on Valentine's Day. It was so lovely to see the giving nature of our students to one another.
Wellbeing Wonder:
A new TV show on the ABC aired last week ‘The Role of a Lifetime’ and it was extremely interesting to the wellbeing space as an educator. One of the topics discussed in the program was ‘The pros and cons of social media’ - The essence of this episode stated: Social media creator Tom Ford discusses the pros and cons of smartphones and social media use with a group of teens. They explore setting expectations, mental health impacts, cyberbullying and more. The show featured a group of adolescents discussing amongst themselves how they navigate their social media accounts, what they block, who they let see their private and public accounts etc. Another topic was ‘Taking a stand against cyberbullying’ which focused on online bullying and how it is not only insidious and damaging but also a common practice among tech-savvy teens. The program specifically discussed what cyberbullying looks like, its impacts and the measures we can take to inform and protect our young people against it. I highly recommend families, parents and carers to view this show on Monday evenings. You can also access it here: https://iview.abc.net.au/show/role-of-a-lifetime
Patrons' Day was an exceptional day with students and staff this week and I look forward to enjoying the Year 7/11 Peer Support Camp next week at Lake Tabourie! Lots of fantastic community events we have on offer. Please enjoy the Captain's Corner from our College Vice Captains - Erin Drewsen and Archie Cockram.
