This week Carroll College was pleased to welcome guest presenters Dr Ari Lander and Amadee Nizigama from the Kumva and Kwibuka: Listen and Remember Program at Sydney University. 

The presenters spoke to our Year 11 and 12 Legal Studies students about the Rwandan Genocide. Students learned about the genocide from a survivor, and through his testimony highlighted the human impact of the genocide for his family and his wife's family. This was supported by and linked to a study of the legal and non-legal responses to this event by Dr Lander.

 

As they were leaving they spoke to me about the emotional toll sharing these stories takes has on them, and how wonderful and supportive our students were. This group travel all over the state presenting at schools. They were really touched and impressed by the empathy, emotional maturity and respectful manner of our students and the questions they asked. Congratulations Year 11 and 12 for your participation! 

 

Year 8 and 9 students have commenced their study of Geography for the semester. Year 8 will be investigating Water in the World this term, while Year 9 will be studying Sustainable Biomes.

 

Year 10 students have changed over from Geography to History this semester and have started their Depth Study called Changing Rights and Freedoms. This is a core study that all students in the state will be completing. Students are investigating the Civil Rights Movement in the USA during the 1950's and 1960's. 

 

As Year 12 students prepare for their Trial HSC exams next week all HSIE teachers will be available in their usual class time to meet with students to assist them in preparation. I encourage all of Year 12 students to take advantage of this opportunity. We wish them well in the coming weeks!
