Footy 2 Fight MND

MND is a term used to describe a disease that affects nerve cells called motor neurons. Motor neurons carry messages from the brain to the muscles via the spinal cord, which allows people to complete everyday movements. For a person with MND, this horrible and debilitating disease gradually takes away their use of their arms and legs, their ability to eat and swallow, their speech and ultimately their ability to breathe…all in an average timeframe of just over 2 years. Each day, two new MND patients are given a diagnosis in Australia, where the disease affects more than 2000 people.

On Wednesday 27 July, Carroll College held a successful fundraiser to raise awareness and funds for Motor Neuron Disease (MND) research by supporting the Footy 2 Fight MND event.

All the proceeds from our fundraiser will go to the Fight MND charity. Fight MND, a nonprofit organisation founded in 2014, uses donations to fund research into successful treatments and to provide vital assistive equipment to help improve the lives of Australians living with MND. For MND research and treatment, the organisation has raised more than $48 million.

To raise awareness, and express their support, students came dressed in the Fight MND colours; black, yellow and blue or their favourite footy colours.  A range of events were held

  • Year 12 sold high quality coffees and ham and cheese croissants to staff and senior students, utilising the hospitality room’s commercial espresso machine.
  • During AM break, Yr 12 held a successful bake sale and raffle with fantastic prizes from Big Freeze beanies, confectionary goods, and charitable donations in the form of gift cards to local businesses. Thank you very much to Cafe 366, Crumb Cafe and Tuross Boatshed and Cafe for their generous contribution to our fundraiser.
  • Additionally, we received contributions from parents and guardians through the Qkr! app, along with staff and students purchasing Big Freeze beanies, which contributed to the total.
  • The fundraiser was highly successful as we raised over $1700 to donate to the Fight MND charity.

Thank you to everyone who supported this event.

The Ice Slide

On Saturday 30 July, the Narooma Lions AFL club are hosting the Footy 2 Fight MND round of AFL at the Bill Smyth Oval in Narooma. At this event, the ‘ice slide’, which is synonymous with the Big Freeze, will be held from 5.00pm. If Carroll College has raised the most funds out of the local participating schools, our Assistant Principal, Mrs Louise Ibbett, will get to enjoy the ice slide. We encourage everyone to come along, participate and show their support for this important cause.
