Principal's Letter
Dear Parents, Students and Friends
The Youth Community Service Award (formerly known as the John Lincoln Youth Community Service Award) has been conducted by the NSW Branch since its inception in 1993. Each year, 25 senior students from NSW High Schools are recognised for their outstanding service to the community and personally presented with their Award by the Governor of NSW in a ceremony at NSW Government House.
I warmly congratulate Damia O’Loughlin of Year 12 on receiving this outstanding award. We have been thrilled with this announcement after nominating Damia a few months ago.
Music Accolades
The College has much to celebrate with the calibre of musicians graduating each year. Bree Mealy joins Harry Hadley, Jack Gallen and Riley Maher becoming the fourth Year 12 student in recent years to be accepted into the Conservatorium of Music at Sydney University. Congratulations to Bree who received the news this week. Bree’s course is a Bachelor of Music (Contemporary Music Practice). A wonderful achievement!
I also acknowledge the work of our music teachers as they inspire and nurture the talent of our students. Thank you to Ros Maher, Teagan Russell, Dee Farnell and Matt O’Brien.
Pastoral Care
I often speak to parents about the pastoral care offered at the College. Whether this is at the time of enrolment, managing student wellbeing, talking about behavioural needs or the holistic approach to student development. Whatever the context, what I do know is that Carroll College is second to none in the pastoral care of its students.
There are times when I hear comments circulating about suspension or even expulsion as preferable measures for excluding children from school. These are never the best options. As adults and significant role models in a student’s life at school, the staff and I are charged with the responsibility of caring for children. First and foremost, it’s about care. When children get it wrong, we model understanding, provide support and offer forgiveness. This does not mean there are no consequences.
I am sure you will be heartened to learn that the Pastoral Care of our students and families takes priority. We are very proactive in our engagement with families which is extremely positive. Our statistics to date are as follows:
- Parent phone calls – 1265
- Email correspondence – 1690
- Student interviews – 9082
- Parent Interviews – 131
- Restorative meetings - 17
The relationships we develop with students and their families is possibly the most powerful partnership in educating a child. The stronger we are as a team, the more precise we can be on the areas that matter – whether it be academic care, social, emotional or spiritual development. The trust and partnership between home and school is at the core of a great school community.
Community Council News
Mr Paul Penberthy, Community Council Chair is now a parent representative of Catholic Schools Parents Canberra Goulburn (CSPGC). Paul is also the designated representative for CSPCG on the Council of Catholic School Parents (CCSP) NSW/ACT. I congratulate Paul on his appointment to these roles and wish him well. Paul will keep our College Council up to date on matters of interest.
