Meet Damia O'Loughlin

I play Abuela in our production of Strictly Ballroom.

Could you please tell us what has been your favourite part about playing Abuela in the School Musical?

My favourite part about playing Abuela is being able to play such a warm and beloved character with a fiery passion. I have also enjoyed the opportunity to practice speaking Spanish.

What can you tell us about your character Abuela?

Abuela is the Spanish grandmother of one of the main characters, Fran. She has a warm and inviting personality who is always there to offer wise words of wisdom and comfort. She also has a deep fiery Spanish passion and reminds the character Scott to feel the rhythm in his heart.

Could you please tell us what has been your favourite part about playing Rico in the school musical?

I’ve always thought that teaching can be described in many ways but certainly never ever boring! However, it still comes as somewhat of a surprise to me that I find myself playing Rico in this year’s College musical “Strictly Ballroom”. I’m still not entirely sure how that happened! My favourite part of playing Rico has to be some of his classic lines that I get to yell in Spanish, he is quite loud to say the least!

What can you tell us about your character Rico?

Rico is a traditional Spanish father to one of the main characters, Francisca. As a father myself, I can definitely identify with his desire to protect his daughter from the attentions of Scott who he no doubt feels cannot be trusted. I should add, however, that I can’t say the same for his love of and expertise in dancing the Paso Doble!
