Dear Parents, Students and Friends
As our school year soon draws to a close, I take this opportunity to thank you for your support this year. We gain strength from each other when times are difficult, and again this year, the COVID-19 pandemic has brought unprecedented challenges. We will not forget 2020-21 in a hurry! And here we are… Christmas upon us and the anticipated joy of connecting with family and friends. The message of Christmas is essentially one of Hope and Love. Through the chaos of the past two years, clarity is gained on what is truly important. I do hope the blessings of Christmas fill your homes and hearts this holy season.
CELEBRATING SUCCESS
Yesterday, students across Years 7-11 were recognised for their consistent work ethic and academic achievements in 2021. There were several different award categories. The academic awards recognise students who receive an A grade in a subject; students whose Semester 2 report contains more than half A grades; students who have shown the most improvement in a subject area; the highest performing student/s in a particular year group across both Semesters 1 and 2 (highest number of A grades received); and the Dux Award which is awarded to students who have received straight A grades across both semesters.
Endeavour Awards are presented to students who have received a report that recognises their excellent and consistent effort across all their subjects.
Major Awards are presented to students who are most improved in Literacy and Numeracy. A Citizenship Award is also presented to those students who have dedicated themselves wholeheartedly to college life.
A full list of recipients can be found further on in this newsletter edition. I congratulate all award recipients on their outstanding efforts. I also congratulate all students who on this occasion did not receive an award. We know how difficult this year has been and I am very proud of the effort that everyone has made towards their learning. All students deserve special mention for their perseverance and resilience. Everyone has shown great teamwork to stay connected and try their best.
STAFFING UPDATE
We are excited to be offering three traineeships in 2022!
This year, Miss Tayah Hancock has been at the college and has done an amazing job in undertaking a Sports Administration trainee role. Miss Hancock will finish next week, and we thank her sincerely for the support she has provided to our staff and students this year. We wish Tayah all the best for the future. In 2022, she plans to study a Bachelor of Education PDHPE at the University of Canberra.
Next year we are very fortunate to be able to offer three school leavers the opportunity to undertake a traineeship at Carroll College. These positions include Sports Administration Trainee, IT Trainee and Business Administration Trainee. Following interviews last week for two of these positions, I am pleased to announce our trainees for 2022 are:
Sports Administration: Archie Hadley
Business Administration: Ronin Rowley
Congratulations to both Archie and Ronin. We are thrilled to be supporting our Year 12 graduates in this way and welcome them to the team. They will be a wonderful addition to the college next year.
Our IT position is currently advertised. Applications close Tuesday 14 December at 9am.
Are you interested in having a GAP year?
2022 IT Traineeship
Catholic Education is partnering with Microsoft to offer a 12-24 month traineeship for any interested Year 12 leaver with an interest in IT and being part of the Microsoft program at Carroll College.
Expressions of Interest can be emailed to Nadine Cooper (nadine.cooper@cg.catholic.edu.au).
Applications should include a cover letter detailing why you would be interested in this position and your resume. More information can be found at this link https://www.megt.com.au/microsoft-traineeship-program/about
Science Coordinator
Mr Tim Hodges will be taking on our Science Coordinator’s role next year in an acting capacity for twelve months. This position will be readvertised permanently midway through next year for 2023. I congratulate Mr Hodges on this appointment and for his commitment to the College. I’m sure you join me in wishing him well with his change of roles. He has extensive experience.
Mr Sean Mulally will be relieving in Mr Hodges’ position as Pastoral Coordinator – Wellbeing. I wish him well in this leadership role.
Religious Education and PDHPE Teacher
I am pleased to announce that Ms Elle Boller is joining the team from 2022. Ms Boller is transferring from Canberra after expressing interest in our recently advertised positions. She is a permanent teacher and Pastoral Coordinator at St Clare’s College, Griffith ACT where she holds the position of Pastoral Coordinator (Year 8) supporting 240 students. Ms Boller teaches PDHPE and RE. Prior to working at St Clare’s, she worked at John Paul II College, Nicholls and held the position of Aboriginal Contact Teacher. Ms Boller is no stranger to Carroll College and last worked here in 2014. Ms Boller is currently on Maternity Leave and will commence in a part-time capacity with us next year.
In other staffing news, Ms Kerryn Hopkins will be teaching nine days p/fortnight in 2022. This will enable Ms Hopkins to continue her work with the University of Wollongong. Mrs Cathie Cahill will be job-sharing with Ms Hopkins teaching one day p/fortnight.
A full list of staff, roles and contact details will be emailed to all families in January.
I wish to acknowledge and sincerely thank the following families who will be leaving our community this year with their youngest child having finished Year 12.
Barnes, Berry, Brewer, Carver, Castrisios, Crooke, Curry, Enright, Ferguson, Flood, Forner, Gleeson, Golden, Hadley, Hall, Harvey, Hatton, McPhee, Mealy, O’Keefe, O’Loughlin, O’Shannessey, Phillips, Roser, Rowley, Slockee Albert, Spence, Stephens, Timosevski and Vanzetti.
Finally, I thank the members of our College Community Council, in particular Mr Paul Penberthy, Council Chair and Mrs Karen Motyka, Deputy Chair for their support and commitment to developing a shared vision for the College. Our Parish Priests, Fr Martins Aloga and Fr George Azhakath as they continue to provide spiritual guidance for students and staff.
I think in times of despair, true strength and determination come to the fore. I take this opportunity to truly thank and acknowledge the staff for their work this year. Their deep concern for our students is admirable.
In closing for 2021, I thank you for your ongoing trust and support as we continue to build a great learning environment at Carroll College. From the entire team, I wish your family a safe and joyous Christmas. Enjoy a special holiday period this year.
Best wishes
Jacqueline Heffernan

Assistant Principal Pastoral Care Report
On Thursday 2 December, the last day of HSC examinations, we celebrated with our Year 12 students at their Formal hosted by Moruya Golf Club. Together with staff and parents, our students were formally introduced as they walked across the red carpet into the Rose Garden where they enjoyed Canapes and refreshments. As the sun set students then adjourned upstairs to share a meal and some dancing. For those lucky enough to attend it was wonderful to see our students so elegantly dressed and happy after what has been the most difficult of years for them. Thank you to everyone involved in the organising of this event and for your patience as we navigated the Covid lockdown, Level 3 restrictions and several date changes. A fabulous evening in a picturesque location.
Recently our Year 10 students have enjoyed a number of events from their Ropes Course experience to Peer Support training day and the 2K21 Showdown Grid Iron Day. All of these events have provided opportunities to build their teamwork and leadership skills. Thank you to Mr Hodges for his organisation and the wonderful staff who participated and supervised.
We are now looking forward to the renamed Year 10 social event, the Summer Soiree. Again, due to lockdown, this event looked unlikely. Finally, we secured Monday 13 December only to have the health regulations change yet again which has meant a shift in venue back to the College so everyone can attend. The Summer Soiree is happening thanks to the efforts of a team of dedicated staff who will transform the Hall into a special space. We are all looking forward to sharing this event with our Year 10 students as we wrap up their 7-10 school years. We will be taking photographs and sharing these with the College community after the event.
Traditionally the Student Leadership Team has the opportunity to go on an overnight camp to bond as a team and develop their vision for their leadership initiatives for the College. Again, due to Covid, this was not possible. Instead, the team spent the day at Kyla Hall, Tuross sharing their ideas and the activity suggestions offered by the Year 11 cohort. Thank you to Mr Hodges, Mr Mulally and Mrs Drewsen for their input.
On a personal note, as my first year at Carroll College draws to a close, I would like to thank our wonderful staff and students for making me feel so welcome. Thank you also to our parents for your ongoing support and I look forward to meeting more of you in person at our community events in 2022.

Sentral Calendar Update
A list of the Archdiocesan and NSWCCC Sports event dates are now available in a Sentral Sports Calendar. The calendar can be accessed by all parents and students through the Parent and Student Portal. To view the sport dates for next year, use the arrows at the top to move to Term 1 2022. The sports events are highlighted in green.
You can view the Sports Calendar from the main Dashboard.
Compass 2022
All schools in the Canberra Goulburn Archdiocese will be using Compass as their School Management System. A School Management System connects our staff, students, and parents to every facet of our school including:
- Attendance
- Wellbeing
- Communications
- Payment and Consent
- Calendars
- Learning and Assessment

Yesterday the College held our “Celebrating Success” Stage meetings where we had the opportunity to come together in prayer. Typically, the school year ends with a Giving Mass but as we are not able to celebrate in this way at the moment, the meetings began with a detailed prayer reflecting on the meaning and joy of the Season of Advent.
It is important in a Catholic school to take opportunities to educate our community about the traditions and seasons of the Church. This can happen in small ways such as prayer at the start of the day. At yesterday’s meetings, students were told about the Advent wreath and its meaning.
We are approaching the third week of Advent. At this time two purple candles and one rose-pink candle are lit on the Advent wreath. The first and second candles are purple. Purple is a serious colour; it represents waiting and royalty. The third candle is rose pink. Pink is a colour of joy. We light the rose-pink candle as a symbol of our great joy at the birth of Jesus. The light of each of these candles signifies that God is the source of all life and the light that brightens our darkened world. The wreath and the candles stand as a sign to us of the coming of Jesus into our world. Members of our Student Leadership Team lit the candles of our Advent wreath at the meeting to signify our waiting and the expected joy of Christ’s birth.
During the prayer, we reflected on the true meaning of Christmas and the efforts we have made to support the St Vincent de Paul Christmas Appeal. The Giving Mass usually includes a time to bring forward baskets of food and gifts that have been donated by our school community to be given to local families in need. For the past two years, we have had to think differently about how we could support our community at Christmas. As a school, we can be very proud, as we have come together to raise money for this important cause. The money raised this year will be donated to St Vincent de Paul’s Batemans Bay and Moruya conferences and will be used to purchase vouchers for those families who need support during this time of year. Thank you to all our families who have generously donated to the Christmas Appeal. Together we will have made a significant difference in the lives of people in the region.

Please keep in your prayers the McLennan family on the loss of their father and husband, Anthony. We keep Annelise (Year 7), her mother and the family in our thoughts and prayers.
Blessed are those who have died in the Lord;
let them rest from their labours for their good deeds go with them.
Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord.
And let perpetual light shine upon him.
May he rest in peace.
Amen.
On Tuesday 30 November, Year 10 students participated in the annual 2K21 NFL Day. The group of Year 10’s competed in their class groups, the names for the classes consisted of Team Mulally, Team Fogarty, Team Lyttle, Team Hancock and Team Brady. After some close-scoring games during the early rounds, it was a tightly run race with Team Mulally finishing top of the ladder. It came down to Team Lyttle and Team Mulally to fight it out for the title. After the final whistle, neither team had scored, the game went into extra time with a player dropoff and golden point. After a series of player drop-offs, Team Lyttle scored, overtaking Team Mulally on the leaderboard and winning the 2K21 NFL title for Carroll College.
American style hotdogs and churros were supplied by Mrs Emma Kenna, Ms Jane Garland and their Year 11 Hospitality crew, a BIG thank you!
The overall leaderboard was: 1st Team Lyttle, 2nd Team Mulally, 3rd Team Hancock, 4th Team Fogarty and finally Team Brady. All games were played in great spirit and the best team won on the day.

Emma and I would like to wish you all a very enjoyable Christmas and we hope it’s full of all your favourite dishes to share with family and friends.
The Year 12 students had their Kitchen Operations exams on the 1st December and they all thought it was a good exam! We’re looking forward to some great results. Last Thursday we had the privilege of attending their formal at Moruya Golf Club to say farewell and wish them all the very best for their futures.
Our student numbers for Food and Beverage next year are strong and we look forward to some changes with this new course.
Last week we were lucky enough when Tilba Real Dairy over-whipped some cream and kindly donated 40 containers of fresh cream. The students were able to learn the process of making butter. We made and rolled over 50 x 125gm rounds of butter. The students made cultured and uncultured butter and by all accounts, the cultured unsalted butter was chosen as the best.
Thank you Tilba Real Dairy for your mishap as we all thoroughly enjoyed making the fresh butter.
Over the last few weeks, students have been busy making Christmas treats such as Christmas Mince Pies and Coconut Ice, recipes are attached for you to make at home.
Year 11 students cooked up a storm for the NFL sports day serving nachos, Churros and Salted caramel Dulce de leche to the Year 10 students. They thoroughly enjoyed them all.
The final cooking task for our Year 11 students will be the Summer Soiree. Our hospitality students will help prepare and serve the food for the 120 students (and staff) completing Year 10.
Emma and I wish you a safe and joyous Christmas and a spectacular 2022.

There has been a lot happening in TAS in the last couple of weeks.
Year 7 students have made Gozleme using a homemade ricotta pastry, Tandoori Meatballs and mini muffins with Christmas Cake toppers.
Year 8 participated in the "Great Hamburger Challenge" and designed their own burgers.
Year 9 and 10 have made their own ricotta to produce berry muffins.
It's so amazing to see smiling faces when students are proud of their dishes!

ATAR 2021
When?
A reminder that ATARs will be released at 9am on Thursday 20 January 2022 to give students as much time as possible to finalise their preferences by midnight on Friday 21 January for January Round 2.
January Round 2, on Wednesday 26 January, is the first offer round for Year 12 students based on ATAR and IB results.
How?
Log in via UAC's website. Students will need their NESA Year 12 student number and UAC PIN to log in.
When students view their ATAR, remind them to download their official ATAR Advice Notice. It's free until Monday 28 March 2022: after this date they’ll need to buy it from the UAC Shop at a cost of $60.
2021 ACT Year 12 students
The ACT Board of Senior Secondary Studies (ACTBSSS) issues the ACT Senior Secondary Certificate and Tertiary Entrance Statement (including ATAR). Students can collect them from your college. The date they will be available is still to be confirmed by ACTBSSS.
ACT Year 12 students can also access their ATAR by logging in to UAC's website from 9am on Thursday 20 January 2022. They will need their Year 12 student number and UAC PIN.
Information about the calculation of the ACT ATAR is available from the ACT Board of Senior Secondary Studies.
ATAR Enquiry Centre
The ATAR Enquiry Centre will be open for students who have queries about the calculation of their ATAR from 8.30am on the following days :
- Thursday 20 January
- Friday 21 January
- Monday 24 January
- Tuesday 25 January
- Wednesday 26 January.
Call 1300 MY ATAR (1300 692 827) or (02) 9119 5012.
UAC PIN reminder
Every year one of the biggest issues for students at ATAR release is their login details, so remind students to have their NESA student number and UAC PIN ready on the day.
If they’ve lost their Year 12 student number, call NESA on 1300 13 83 23. If they’ve lost their UAC PIN, call UAC on (02) 9752 0200.
Students who have applied through UAC can reset their UAC PIN using the 'Forgotten your PIN?' link on the application login page.
If students are having problems logging in to the UAC application, the quickest and easiest way for them to get help is to call UAC Customer Service on (02) 9752 0200, 8.30am to 4.30pm Monday to Friday. We don't reply to email requests for login details as we need to identify the sender before giving out this information.
Changing preferences
Students often feel confused about the process of changing their preferences. Our advice to them is: If you get an offer, accept it. You can then remove this course from your list of preferences and change your preferences for the next offer round when you may be eligible to receive another offer.
If you receive an offer to another course, you can accept it and withdraw from the original course, or not accept it and keep your place in the original course.
Educational Access Schemes
- EAS application and document deadline for January Round 2 will be midnight Friday 17 December 2021.
- EAS eligibility letters will be released progressively from Friday 21 January 2022 to all applicants with finalised assessment for January Round 2.

Term 4 fee statements were emailed on 15 October with a due date of Friday 5 November. Thank you to families who have made payments. Any recent payments will be receipted shortly.
Any families currently who have submitted a Fee Concession Application, your application process is currently underway and will be finalised in the next two weeks.
Families assessed as having the capacity to pay fees are expected to pay their fees. Where families demonstrate an unwillingness to pay fees, the College will recover fees and this may involve referral to a debt collection agency. Additional costs incurred in the collection of fees are the responsibility of the debtor/parent/guardian.
Managing your Fees
The College recommends a regular payment approach to managing your school fees and to reduce the financial burden that delaying fee payments may cause. For example, a regular weekly or fortnightly payment through Direct Debit, BPay or Qkr! can assist in managing your school fees. The 2021 Fee Schedule is available on the Carroll College website – Enrolment/Fees. In this section of the website, there is also a Fee Calculator to assist families in determining fee payment amounts in managing their school fee payments. If you are unable to pay off your school fees in full by the end of the year, you will need to setup a Fee Agreement with the College. A fee agreement assists both the College and families in managing school fees. Please contact our finance team via finance.ccb@cg.catholic.edu.au to obtain Fee Agreement Form.
Fee Assistance – Concession Application
Currently enrolled families facing significant financial difficulty are able to apply for fee assistance. Fee assistance is income based and requires supporting documentation. You may be asked to meet to discuss aspects of your application and will be required to provide supporting documentation. Fee assistance can include:
- a payment plan (extends the payment period to 12 months and commits families to make ongoing payments to pay off school fees by the end of the school year)
- an extended payment plan (extends the payment period to greater than 12 months and commits families to make ongoing payments to pay off school fees over an approved, extended period of time)
- Fee Concession – partial reduction of fees and payment plan
- Fee Concession – full reduction of fees
Fee assistance is an annual application process based on your circumstances. In some situations, any reductions may be reviewed on a term by term basis, which would then require separate applications including supporting documentation at the start of each term. Where your circumstances improve during the school year, the College relies on families to get in touch, so that your fee assistance can be adjusted accordingly and the College is able to provide support to other families requiring assistance.
Government grants provide part of the funding required to operate the College. The balance of operating costs are funded through school fees. The ongoing operations of the College are dependent on parents paying the required level of fees. Every effort will be made by the College to recover fees from parents who are deemed to have the capacity to pay fees.
On the basis of the information provided in the Fee Assistance Form, the Fee Committee will determine an appropriate level of fee support based upon guidelines agreed to by Catholic Education Archdiocese of Canberra and Goulburn and Carroll College. The Fee Committee reviews fee assistance applications once per term, in the latter half of the term. Applicants will be then be advised of the outcome via email and letter. Please sign a copy of this letter and return via the envelope provided to the College. Following receipt of signed agreement letter, the concession will then be applied to your fees. Where you are granted a partial reduction in school fees with a payment plan, it is necessary that you commit to maintaining your payment plan. Where you are on a payment plan or extended payment plan, it is important to maintain those ongoing payments. If you need to change your payment plan arrangements, please get in touch with College as soon as practicable.
Change in Circumstances – Request for Split Billing
Where there has been a change to your family circumstances and you require split billing, this creates a variation to your school fee obligations from initial enrolment. Please request the Split Billing Request Form which needs to be signed and dated by both parents/guardians to take effect. Separate forms can be provided to each parent. This form requires parents to indicate the percentage split for fees and acknowledges your obligations relating to fees, levies and charges incurred while your child is enrolled at the College. Please contact our finance team via finance.ccb@cg.catholic.edu.au to obtain a Split Billing Request Form.
All information is treated and maintained confidentially.
If you require fee assistance, please contact Rhonda Forner, Business Manager by email at Rhonda.Forner@cg.catholic.edu.au
The Finance Team wishes all our College Families a very Merry Christmas and a relaxing new year! The Finance Office will be closed from Wednesday 15 December 2021 until Thursday 27 January 2022. For any fee queries or changes to Direct Debit payments, please get in contact by 13 December.

When finalising payments on Qkr, please make sure to finalise anything that is in the cart on the top right-hand corner. If the cart is not empty and you do not have a receipt, this means the payment and consent has not been finalised. This includes any events or excursions that only require permission (eg. swimming consent notes). Once you have signed the permission note you will still need to ‘checkout’ at the end of the process to ensure the permission note is finalised. Thank you!
Qkr! Is our preferred payment option. If you need help using this app, please contact the Office on 44 715600.
