Dear Parents, Students and Friends
It has been our pleasure to welcome all students back to school this week for face-to-face learning. Everyone is adjusting to regular routines again and I am sure there are some tired children this evening!
We have enjoyed a very special week with Year 12 students this week. The timing has been quite remarkable that all special events planned have been able to go ahead, only days into the first week of students returning to school full-time.
The week started with a Covid safe Year 12 ‘Welcome back to School’ breakfast. On Wednesday morning our Year 12 Student Leadership Team (SLT) handed over responsibility to the incoming Year 12 leaders at a commissioning ceremony, including blessing of the leadership badges by Fr Martins Aloga. This was followed by a Year 12 Mass and Awards ceremony Wednesday evening with parents at St Bernard’s Church. Today, the Pastoral Coordinators and I enjoyed lunch out at Moruya Golf Club to mark the final day of formal schooling for Year 12.
It has been an absolute pleasure to celebrate with Year 12 this week. They are such an impressive group of young people, unique in character and completely inspiring. Their diversity, passion, sense of fun, and support of one another has been lovely to witness. I congratulate each one of them on their achievements and wish them every success for the future.
Thank you to our outgoing Year 12 Student Leadership Team 2021

Farewell Year 12
World Teachers’ Day
Today we acknowledge and thank our teachers for their tremendous work with our young people. The theme of World Teachers' Day 2021 is 'Teachers at the heart of education recovery'. It aims to recognise the tireless efforts of teachers over the course of the pandemic.
Blessing on your home and family. Congratulations again to our Year 12 students on the completion of their thirteen years of formal schooling. Best wishes always!
Warm regards

The Senior Leadership Team 2022 Commissioning Ceremony was held on Wednesday 27 October in the Hall with a limited audience due to COVID restrictions. Fortunately, Fr Martins was able to join us to bless the badges and gave the students an insight into Jesus as the ultimate role model for Christian leadership. Our simple ceremony saw the handing on of leadership from the 2021 SLT to SLT 2022 followed by a lovely morning tea and the sharing of the leadership journals. The photo of the new SLT for 2022 shows the new stoles that are now an additional symbol of leadership at the College. A huge thank you to Mrs Rhonda Forner our Business Manager who generously made these stoles for the College.

This new team are very excited to begin their roles and will have an opportunity to spend time together in the coming weeks to formulate their vision and calendar of activities for 2022. More photos can be found on the College Facebook page.
I am sure that you have seen the Welcome back banners either in person or on the College Facebook page. Seeing these along with receiving a Chupa Chup and happy smiles and greetings gave everyone a lift as we arrived on Monday. We are still required to follow health regulations that require Year groups to be separate as much as possible and wear face masks when indoors or in settings where distancing is difficult.
Some students are still forgetting to bring their masks to school. CE have instructed schools not to supply these masks as this is a parental responsibility. We have very limited supplies and when we run out we have been instructed that students without a mask will need to be sent home. To avoid this, we are encouraging students to make sure they have a supply of masks or a spare one in their bag in case they forget.
The weather is now warming up. All students are encouraged to wear a hat when outside, to bring sunscreen and apply it and sit in the shade. If students require sunscreen then they can use the supply that is available on the table outside the Pastoral Care office. When COVID restrictions ease further we are hoping that students will again be able to mix across the school.

Electives 2022
Over the past two weeks Year 8, 9 and 10 students have been finalising their electives for 2022. We have been able to offer a wide range of courses next year. If any student has not completed their changes, please see Mrs Paull in the VET & Careers office.
Year 10 Minimum Standards Test – Week 7
The HSC minimum standard is a way of supporting and ensuring students have a functional level of literacy and numeracy. To achieve an HSC in 2020 and beyond, students must sit the HSC minimum standards online tests in reading, writing and numeracy. Each of the three tests are of 45 minutes duration.
Minimum Standard Reading Test
- 45 multiple-choice questions
- Adaptive — meaning it tailors to a student's ability. Questions become harder or easier depending on whether a student is answering questions correctly or incorrectly.
Minimum Standard Numeracy Test
- 45 multiple-choice questions.
- Adaptive — meaning it tailors to student's ability. Questions become harder or easier depending on whether a student is answering questions correctly or incorrectly.
- An onscreen calculator will be provided for some questions.
Minimum Standard Writing Test
- One questionbased on a visual or text prompt.
- Response of up to 500 words to be provided in onscreen text box.
- Marked by trained markers according to the achievement level descriptions, relevance of writing to the topic, structure and sequence of ideas and control of language.
Preparing for the writing test
500 words is only a suggestion
- Many students can meet the minimum standard in fewer than 500 words.
- Students should try to use the full 45 minutes.
- Students should use some time to plan their response on a piece of paper, and some time to edit their work. For example, a student might write 400 words in 40 minutes and then spend five minutes editing the response.
- Any text that exceeds 600 words will be in red. It will still be marked, but is unlikely to add value to the student’s response.
- Students should place greater emphasis on the quality of the response rather than focusing on the word count.
Sample tests can viewed on NESA following the link https://educationstandards.nsw.edu.au/wps/portal/nesa/11-12/hsc/hsc-minimum-standard/online-tests
Year 10 students will be completing the minimum standards test in Week 7. A copy of the test timetable is below.

Design and Technology
The design and Technology students handed their Major Design Projects (MDP’s) in at the end of last term. Students are given the opportunity to explore Products, Systems or Environments for their project and it must have a genuine need to be further developed. There is a wide variety of projects with both Products and Environments created this year.
Madeline Forner created a fire-retardant dog coat after feeling the anxiety associated with keeping a pet safe during the fires, we all experienced in the Summer of 2020. She wanted to create a coat that was easy to put on, that enabled the owner to track their animal by GPS if they do happen to become separated and to primarily protect the dog from falling embers and radiant heat associated with fires.
Ben Rogerson designed a Senior Common room as the school does not currently have a designated space for seniors to gather. He surveyed students and gathered data to analyse to ensure his design catered for the needs of this demographic. His final design was prototyped with a mix of 3D printing, foam sculpting and paper to achieve a visual representation of his design.
Tom Tegel and his family had to make the heartbreaking decision to leave their chickens when the 2020 fires hit their property. Out of this experience he designed a chicken hutch ‘The Hasty Hen Hutch’ that can be quickly raised and put on a standard 4 x 6 trailer with the chickens inside. This enables the chickens to be safely moved and relocated to a location where they can be kept for an extended period. A battery drill is all that is needed to raise the hutch and a wheel to make it easy to push the hutch up to the trailer where it can be lowered and pushed onto the trailer with ease.
Bree McFadyen loved gardening and was inspired to create a gardening kit for teenagers as she recognised the lack of products on the market designed for this market. Her ‘Dirty Bags’ for teenagers is a bag full of all the things needed to start growing one vegetable. She designed the product so that it can be organised into Fruits, Roots, Legumes and Leaves and explored the needs of each plant chosen for each category. An informative booklet, seed raising mix, seed raising pot and seed saving packet are all included in the bag. She focused on using eco friendly products when producing her prototype which includes the container that the soil is stored in.
Tyler Mannion has a passion for basketball and also had a need for a desk lamp to use when studying for his HSC. He combined the two and created an adjustable, LED lamp. He incorporated the laser cutter to precisely cut out the shapes he designed for the arm of his lamp and to engrave the basketball pattern onto the timber. He chose to use cedar for its colour and for how light weight it is. The cedar was then pressed between two pieces of clear acrylic and held tight with a knock down fitting to give it a modern and sleek finish.
Sam Crooke designed a transportable seat and storage unit for his mother who specialises in Podiatry. The ‘PediPod’ was designed to reduce the amount of times his mother had to return to her car to bring her tools etc into her clients. The Design Brief stated that it had to be able to travel across many different types of terrain, was to securely store her tools of the trade, was to be safe with no chance of injuring his mother or client when in use and had to be light weight as she would be lifting it in and out of her car several times a day. Due to many limiting factors Sam was unable to fully complete his prototype.
Harry Haultain chose to refurbish the current basketball courts at Carroll College. As a passionate basketball player, he recognised that the current courts are dated and in need of repair. In Harry’s Design Brief he spoke about making the area a multi-function sports facility that also incorporated more seating for spectators, more handball courts and some shaded eating areas along with an outdoor amphitheatre that can be used as seating during breaks and performances for the Drama and Music students during lessons, creating an outdoor classroom/performance area.
Although Harry did not complete his prototype as he had planned, he came up with some great design ideas that would look amazing if executed in real life. I personally like the three seating areas that flanked the basketball court that were designated to our three houses, MacKillop, Chisholm and Xavier.
'Soil Your Undies' Competition
Year 9-10 Agriculture have participated in the UNE ‘Soil Your Undies’ competition this year. They buried the undies 8 weeks ago and have now dug them up and sent them off to the university for analysis. The university team will look at them under a microscope and determine how many microorganisms are present in our soil. Soil health and microorganisms are vital to growing and producing top quality produce. The students are looking forward to finding out the results later in the year.
Virtual Archdiocesan Athletics Carnival Awards
Due to COVID restrictions we were once again forced to cancel the Archdiocesan Athletics Carnival for 2021. This year a “virtual carnival” was run, whereby all the competing schools entered their carnival results online. These results were then collated and winners and placegetters were determined for each athletic event. Congratulations to the following students who received awards for their virtual entries -
Charlee Rush, Miah Chatfield, Chelsea Tyrrell, Pypar McCarthy, Skye Wildman, Maya Barnes, Amelia Harding, Tanesha Dennis, Luke Drewsen, Logan Cross, Zane Brady, Will Grant, Angus Lyons, Michael Aitken, Bailey Brady and Cooper Brady.
Also a special congratulations to -

National Mental Health Month is an initiative of the Mental Health Foundation Australia (MHFA) to advocate for and raise awareness of Australian mental health. It is an important time where the Australian community comes together to raise awareness and promote better mental health for all.
https://mentalhealthmonth.wayahead.org.au/tune-in/
It means being aware of what is happening within you, and in the world around you.
Being present by tuning in has been shown to help build self-awareness, help make effective choices, reduce the impact of worry, and build positive connections.

Student Welfare Officer
Term 4 fee statements were emailed on 15 October with a due date of Friday 5 November. Thank you to families who have made payments. Any recent payments will be receipted shortly.
Any families currently who have submitted a Fee Concession Application, your application process is currently still underway.
Covid-19 Fee Assistance
Catholic Education and Carroll College will support families who have been financially impacted as a result of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic in Term 3 and 4, 2021. Where your family is experiencing financial stress due to job loss, being stood down, reduction in work hours, business downturn or closure resulting from the Covid-19 pandemic, full or partial fee relief is available. Please complete the Covid-19 Fee Assistance Request Form and you will be asked to provide supporting documentation. Please contact the Business Manager via email Rhonda.forner@cg.catholic.edu.au
It is important to seek this assistance as soon as possible during Term 4.
Managing your Fees
The College recommends a regular payment approach to managing your school fees and to reduce the financial burden that delaying fee payments may cause. For example, a regular weekly or fortnightly payment through Direct Debit, BPay or Qkr! can assist in managing your school fees. The 2021 Fee Schedule is available on the Carroll College website – Enrolment/Fees. In this section of the website, there is also a Fee Calculator to assist families in determining fee payment amounts in managing their school fee payments. If you are unable to pay off your school fees in full by the end of the year, you will need to set up a Fee Agreement with the College. A fee agreement assists both the College and families in managing school fees. Please contact our finance team via finance.ccb@cg.catholic.edu.au to obtain Fee Agreement Form.
Fee Assistance – Concession Application
Currently, enrolled families facing significant financial difficulty are able to apply for fee assistance. Fee assistance is income based and requires supporting documentation. You may be asked to meet to discuss aspects of your application and will be required to provide supporting documentation. Fee assistance can include:
- a payment plan (extends the payment period to 12 months and commits families to make ongoing payments to pay off school fees by the end of the school year)
- an extended payment plan (extends the payment period to greater than 12 months and commits families to make ongoing payments to pay off school fees over an approved, extended period of time)
- Fee Concession – partial reduction of fees and payment plan
- Fee Concession – full reduction of fees
Fee assistance is an annual application process based on your circumstances. In some situations, any reductions may be reviewed on a term by term basis, which would then require separate applications including supporting documentation at the start of each term. Where your circumstances improve during the school year, the College relies on families to get in touch, so that your fee assistance can be adjusted accordingly and the College is able to provide support to other families requiring assistance.
Government grants provide part of the funding required to operate the College. The balance of operating costs are funded through school fees. The ongoing operations of the College are dependent on parents paying the required level of fees. Every effort will be made by the College to recover fees from parents who are deemed to have the capacity to pay fees.
On the basis of the information provided in the Fee Assistance Form, the Fee Committee will determine an appropriate level of fee support based upon guidelines agreed to by the Catholic Education Archdiocese of Canberra and Goulburn and Carroll College. The Fee Committee reviews fee assistance applications once per term, in the latter half of the term. Applicants will be then be advised of the outcome via email and letter. Please sign a copy of this letter and return via the envelope provided to the College. Following receipt of the signed agreement letter, the concession will then be applied to your fees. Where you are granted a partial reduction in school fees with a payment plan, it is necessary that you commit to maintaining your payment plan. Where you are on a payment plan or extended payment plan, it is important to maintain those ongoing payments. If you need to change your payment plan arrangements, please get in touch with College as soon as practicable.
Change in Circumstances – Request for Split Billing
Where there has been a change to your family circumstances and you require split billing, this creates a variation to your school fee obligations from initial enrolment. Please request the Split Billing Request Form which needs to be signed and dated by both parents/guardians to take effect. This form requires parents to indicate the percentage split for fees and acknowledges your obligations relating to fees, levies and charges incurred while your child is enrolled at the College. Please contact our finance team via finance.ccb@cg.catholic.edu.au to obtain a Split Billing Request Form.
All information is treated and maintained confidentially.
If you require fee assistance, please contact Rhonda Forner, Business Manager by email at Rhonda.Forner@cg.catholic.edu.au

When finalising payments on Qkr, please make sure to finalise anything that is in the cart on the top right-hand corner. If the cart is not empty and you do not have a receipt, this means the payment and consent has not been finalised. This includes any events or excursions that only require permission (eg. swimming consent notes). Once you have signed the permission note you will still need to ‘checkout’ at the end of the process to ensure the permission note is finalised. Thank you!
Qkr! Is our preferred payment option. If you need help using this app, please contact the Office on 44 715600.
