Dear Parents, Students and Friends
2023 represents a highly rewarding year for our learning community. At the core of everything we do lies the Spirit of Carroll College. I believe we have truly lived out our K-12 theme this year which centres on service and integrity as a Catholic organisation.
“The fruit of love is service, which is compassion in action.” St Mother Teresa
I believe a shared vision between families and educators is exemplified the moment families make the decision to educate their children in a Catholic school, where faith is the foundation to supporting young people in their learning and preparation for life. No greater gift can Carroll College give to students and their families than to respond to our mission of ensuring that we provide the very best outcomes for learning.
For myself professionally, 2023 marks an important milestone. I have served twenty years as a Principal in the Archdiocese of Canberra and Goulburn, and five years as Principal of Carroll College, a position I love and embrace wholeheartedly. I recently undertook a successful Contract Review and have accepted another five-year contract to serve the community as Principal. Significant changes and circumstances have shaped the past five years and as a result we have emerged stronger and more resolute about our direction as a college and how we provide for continuous improvement.
I am most proud of the relationships that the team and I have built with our families. As I read the hundreds of email exchanges with parents and the wellbeing entries in Sentral, I know our teachers know their students and what they need to experience success. A comment that has stuck with me that was expressed by a senior mentor encapsulates our focus on fostering places of learning that are truly Christian and fully human – “know your students outrageously!” This brings a smile to my face every time I hear these words. What a wonderful challenge to put to educators! This is our job, our moral purpose to connect and make a difference in the lives of every child at Carroll College.
Our precision and focus to support teachers to transform lives through learning with the introduction of the Catalyst initiative, and subsequent rollout years, has been instrumental in bringing about consistency of practice and ensuring high-quality instruction through evidence-based leadership techniques. The Science of Learning has transformed the way we plan and enhance classroom instruction. We are on a journey together and our Archdiocesan schools are now being recognised for best practice pedagogy.
The College enrolment is 524 students from Years 7 to 12 (August Census 2023) which has been steadily increasing from 464 students in 2019 (August Census 2019); a 13% growth over the past five years. We have welcomed new staff and retained an outstanding teaching team, along with highly skilled support and clerical staff. It is an exciting time of growth for the college, and we stand committed to ongoing improvements, including facility upgrades, new opportunities for student engagement, and continued implementation of high impact teaching practices.
Change takes time. It requires strategic focus, relentless passion, establishing respectful relationships and trust, the ability to navigate complexities, clear communication, and leading teaching and learning with confidence. My focus has always been on improving culture and academic standards and raising the expectations for all.
Our values of compassion, love, equity, justice, and respect are underpinned by the Spirit of Carroll College, and it’s through these values and our performance expectations that our students thrive and have a sense of belonging and purpose.
As I close for 2023, I take this opportunity to wholeheartedly thank and acknowledge the staff for their committed work this year. As we farewell colleagues embarking on new paths and retirement, they go with our blessings, knowing they have been outstanding role models to our students and supportive colleagues who have contributed to the greater good of our college.
We say thank you to Mrs Cheryle King, Mrs Krys Wise and Ms Jane Garland; their contributions to the college have been significant. Also, to Trainees, Gemma Ferguson and Jack McCann – I wish them well in their future careers.
We also have teachers who are taking a step back for twelve months to focus on other priorities but will be working at the college on a casual or part-time basis next year. Thank you to Mrs Erica Drewsen, Ms Kerryn Nicholson and Mr Brendan Ashby.
We will be welcoming Ms Suzzanne Gray to the teaching team next year. Suzzanne will be employed on a temporary part-time basis in 2024. Her teaching load consists of Mathematics/HSIE classes. Suzzanne holds a Bachelor of Science (Botany/Genetics; Agriculture)/Bachelor of Engineering where she also studied Mathematics, Graduate Diploma of Secondary Education, Master of Philosophy, and has begun a PhD in Earth Sciences Ecology Agriculture. Suzzanne has a willingness to teach most subjects. We warmly welcome Suzzanne to the college.
Following recent interviews for the Aboriginal Education Officer’s role and the Sports Traineeship, I am pleased to announce that Malaki Morton and Claudia Hannan (former students) have been successful in gaining these positions respectively. Malaki will be working towards a Cert. IV in Education Support and Claudia a Cert III in Sport and Recreation during their time in these roles. The team look forward to supporting Malaki and Claudia in the early years of their career.
I am pleased to announce that Belinda Whiteman has been successful in gaining the VET Hospitality/TAS Assistant’s role replacing Jane Garland. Belinda moves into this role with a wealth of experience and expertise. She holds a Certificate IV in Commercial Cookery, is a Food Safety Supervisor, has completed the Advanced Licensee Training, holds a Cert IV in Education Learning Support, and is adept in managing large scale events. A warm welcome to Belinda as she moves into this role permanently. Belinda’s appointment is a very nice connection to Jane Garland as Belinda trained Jane during her apprenticeship.
Mrs Catherine Davis will have a full teaching load next year and therefore will not be supporting formally in the Aboriginal Contact Centre. She will of course, be supporting all students in her capacity as teacher. Aboriginal Elder and Knowledge Holder, Trish Ellis is working an additional day next year and will be in the college every Tuesday and Thursday which is wonderful news! Chelsea Laurie, Aboriginal Education Officer will be with us Term 1 before relocating to Sydney to complete her degree at Sydney University.
I also thank the members of the Carroll College Community Council (CCCC), in particular Ms Jeni McCarthy, Council Chair and Mr Paul Penberthy, Deputy Chair for their support and commitment to developing a culture of collaboration. Mr Jim Herford will be stepping away from the Council next year with his daughter having completed Year 12. Mr Paul Penberthy will also be stepping down from the Council after serving in executive positions over the past six years. I sincerely thank Jim and Paul for their support and advocacy of the college over many years. We are moving to a new structure of school governance in 2024 which will bring with it new opportunities.
As we acknowledge the many blessings of 2023, I thank all families for their ongoing support. Among all things to be celebrated, nothing comes close to saving the young life of former Year 12 student, Mr Thomas Haynes. Our first responders are heroes for us all.
It continues to be my absolute privilege to lead Carroll College. I congratulate all students on a successful year. Each one of them progressing in ways that should make them proud. Our community is a better place for having the strong partnerships that exist between families and the college.
Wishing you and your loved ones a blessed Christmas. Best wishes from the entire Carroll team.

Giving Mass and St Vincent De Paul Christmas Appeal
Yesterday, Thursday 14 December, we celebrated The Giving Mass which is an annual tradition at Carroll College. It is a very special way to end the school year as we come together to pray, sing and give thanks to God for all we have.
Thank you to Mrs Belle Barling, Faith Formation Coordinator, for her work in creating a reflective and meaningful liturgy. Congratulations to all readers and students involved, in particular, our wonderful singers and musicians led by Mrs Ros Maher, Mrs Teagan Lomax and Mr Matt Smith.
During the Mass, we presented to representatives of the Moruya and Batemans Bay SVdP Conferences, a large number of gifts and donations. Mrs Phil Billington then spoke to the school expressing her gratitude for the generosity of our community and explaining how our gifts will help others this Christmas.
Thank you to all who contributed to the Vinnie's Christmas Appeal!
We hope and pray that everyone in our school and wider community has a safe and holy Christmas.
2024 Religious Theme for K-12
On Monday 11 December, school leaders from St Bernard’s, St Mary’s and Carroll College met to discern a new religious theme for our K-12 Pathway for 2024. After considerable discussion and searching, a consensus was reached and the theme for 2024 is “Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life" John 8:12
This theme reflects the values of “faithful” and “supportive”, two words the students felt a Catholic school should be. The theme also relates to the Archdiocese's Year of the Holy Spirit (2023-2024).
Selecting the new religious theme was a valuable experience for all student leaders involved and it was a pleasure to see our three schools working together to reach a common goal.
A Personal Note
This is my final newsletter article for 2023. As you may be aware, I am stepping back from my role as Religious Education Coordinator for 2024. I will be working one day a week at Carroll primarily working with staff on High Impact Teaching Practices, The Writing Revolution and Classroom Mastery; I also have a small teaching load.
I would like to thank the RE Department for their support and their hard work over the years. I especially wish Mrs Anna Smart the very best as Religious Education Coordinator in 2024. Anna is a highly experienced Religious Education teacher and curriculum leader. She has a wealth of knowledge, a creative mind and high expectations of herself and others. I know Anna will do a wonderful job.

A Message from our Assistant Principal, Pastoral Care
The year that was.
2023 has certainly been an exciting year at Carroll College. Lead by the Pastoral Team and with the support of our teachers students have had the opportunity to join in a wide range of activities and several new initiatives offered to enhance their well-being, skills, and connectedness. Thank you to all of our teaching and support staff who have worked so hard during the year to teach and guide our students and support our families. In particular thank you to all the Homeroom and Academic Care teachers, Year 12 Mentors and the Pastoral team; Mrs Dell, Mr McAteer, Mrs Lyttle, Ms Boller, Mrs Smith, Mrs Cuifettelli, Mrs Croese and our College Counsellor Ms Naomi Bee.
Year 8 Pastoral Day
Our Year 8 students had a lot of fun participating in their Pastoral Day. Students were involved in activities focused on increasing their knowledge on topics such as diversity, discrimination, equity and empathy. A highlight of the day for both students and staff was Mr Bissell's Magic Carpet game, the activities shared by the guest presenter from Active Art, and the delicious lunch prepared by our Hospitality students. Thank you to Mrs Smith, the Pastoral team, and the staff for creating the resources, delivering the day, and all who worked behind the scenes.
Peer Support Training Day
The Year 10 Peer Support Training Day allowed 41 student volunteers to experience the activities they will lead on the Year 7/11 Peer Support Camp in early 2024. After walking to the beach, they rotated through various activities competing against each other and displaying leadership skills and teamwork. Thank you for the delicious catering from Mrs Whiteman and her Year 11 Hospitality students and the efforts of Mr Hodges, Mr Brady, Ms Boller, Mr Bissell, Miss Large and Mr McFadyen who facilitated the day and the organising support offered by Mr Joel Coates.
Christmas Activities and Fundraising
As the year ends our new Student Leadership Team deserves a well-earned acknowledgment and praise for the commitment and effort they have put into their first term as leaders. Each student has embraced their role and worked together as a team. In Week 9, the SLT provided fun activities with a Christmas theme.
On Monday 4 December, the SLT organised and judged the Christmas colouring activity in the HUB during AM break whilst accompanied by Christmas tunes.
On Tuesday 5 December, the SLT hid Santa images under seats in the college. “Find the Santa under the seat” was the buzz as students raced to check their chairs.
Friday 8 December saw an extended homeroom. The SLT ran a Scavenger hunt, collecting a gold coin for the opportunity to wear mufti in a Christmas theme/colour to raise money for the Vinnies' Christmas appeal. The chance of the winner enjoying a hot chip lunch made the event very competitive!
Thank you to Ms Boller and the SLT for their leadership and initiative to raise funds for Vinnies and build school spirit.
At the end of a very busy year that has offered so many opportunities and support it is fitting that we closed with our Celebrating Success Awards assembly and the Christmas Giving Mass.

The Captains Corner - Indigenous Captains
Hi everyone! I'm one of your Indigenous Captains of 2023. My name is Sarmaya Te-kowhai or you can call me Maymay for short, most people do. I applied for Indigenous Captain because I believe I can make a better change and give this school community a better understanding of the First Nation people and their culture to everyone. I want to archive in everyone in the school community the importance of First Nation people and the land we stand on today. I would like to look out for those who may need my helping hand for any reason. (I’m always here for anyone). I value my role and commit to it throughout the school community. Because together we can make a difference. Here are some fun facts about me!
- I love the beach
- My favourite sport to play is Netball and Touch footy
- I enjoy baking goods and sweets
- My favourite movie would be “Drop Dead Fred” a very classic old movie that I used to watch when growing up.
- I like to go on walks from time to time. As I don't like to be cramped up inside all day. A walk is always good now and then.
