Dear Parents, Students and Friends
End of year celebrations have begun and with these come moments of joy, and at times a real sense of loss. This year, Carroll is farewelling two long standing members of the team with Cheryle King and Jane Garland retiring. Jane’s final day was Tuesday. Last Thursday the entire staff celebrated at The Oaks Ranch with a very fitting farewell celebration for two highly respected colleagues. Cheryle has been teaching at Carroll College for 26 years and Jane 21 years. A remarkable testament to their commitment and service to the college. It speaks volumes to the culture and character of our wonderful school community. I know you will join with me in wishing Jane and Cheryle good health and happiness in retirement. Mrs King finishes at the end of the term!
Carroll College Official Opening and Blessing of Facilities
It was our pleasure to welcome special guests to the college today to officially open our refurbished classrooms, Staff Centre and specialised learning spaces. Ceremonies such as these are behind about three years following the pandemic. Today was an opportunity to express our heartfelt gratitude for the generous funding that has been provided to refurbish our facilities. This financial support represents a significant step towards enhancing the overall quality of education to improve pedagogy, and the well-being of our staff and students.
Special guests included:
- Archbishop Christopher Prowse
- Mr Ross Fox, Director of Catholic Education
- Fr George Azhakath, Parish Priest of Sacred Heart Parish, Moruya
- Fr Loi Viovicente, Parish Priest of St Bernard’s Parish, Batemans Bay
- Mr Kevin Morrison, Director of Capital Planning & Resources for Catholic Schools NSW
- Ms Jeni McCarthy, Carroll College Community Council Chair
- Mr Peter Hendon, Cercol Construction Services
- Mr Geoff Whitnall, Senior Officer Planning and Facilities Catholic Education
- Principal colleagues - Mrs Jo Wain and Mrs Noeleen O’Neill
- Parents of our Council, Carroll staff, and students.
I came into the project towards the end when I started as Principal in 2019. We were completing the staff centre and I distinctly remember some very nervous colleagues unsure of what a flexible and open staff area would be like. I soon realised I needed to scale back the idea of ‘hot desking’ to a plan that everyone would be comfortable with. In no time, staff began to see the benefits of collaborating across faculties, enjoying the interaction of the whole team, and working alongside colleagues to learn and connect. We’ve never looked back!
At the ceremony this morning, I was able to congratulate and thank the team from Collins Pennington Architects, formally Collins Caddaye – who I have worked with for many years, and also to Cercol Construction Services on their high standards and professionalism throughout the project. It was an enjoyable journey and a project that has provided so many benefits for the college.
I was able to personally thank Catholic Education Canberra Goulburn and Catholic Schools NSW for their ongoing support. We have big plans for the future and the ongoing improvements to facilities and infrastructure at the college is such an important investment for generations to come.
I will always champion Catholic schools and prioritise school improvement as a continuous process with relentless focus on maximising outcomes for all students. It is the core business of every teacher and must impact upon every student. As we continue to shape Carroll College, our team does so with optimism and with the knowledge that improvements build our capacity as a whole.
We are looking forward to our next building project set to start next year.

School Attendance
A reminder to all students and families that the next two weeks are compulsory school days. Our final day of Term 4 is Friday 15 December 2023. I would love to see every student in attendance, every day, in the lead up to our Christmas break.
Enjoy a relaxing weekend.

St Mother Teresa
St. Andrew, a significant figure in Christian tradition, holds a revered place, especially in the Eastern Orthodox Church. Celebrated on November 30th, the Feast of St. Andrew marks the beginning of Advent - a time of anticipation and preparation for the birth of Jesus Christ.
Andrew, a fisherman from Galilee, became one of the twelve apostles of Jesus Christ. He is known for his role in bringing others to Christ, including his brother Peter. His life and teachings embody dedication, humility, and a profound commitment to spreading the Gospel. His fervent desire to meet Jesus and bring others to him makes him a wonderful symbol of what all Christians should be doing during the season of Advent.
Advent, derived from the Latin word "adventus" meaning "coming," is a period of spiritual reflection and expectation. It spans the four Sundays leading up to Christmas, signifying hope, peace, joy, and love—themes symbolised by the Advent wreath's candles.
St. Andrew's Day acts as a prelude to Advent, encouraging believers to emulate his virtues of faith and selflessness as they embark on a season of spiritual preparation. The day serves as a reminder of the importance of actively awaiting the arrival of Christ, not only in historical remembrance but also in spiritual anticipation for his eventual return.
During this sacred time, Christians engage in prayer, reflection on scripture, acts of kindness, and charitable deeds, preparing their hearts to celebrate the birth of Jesus and looking forward to his promised second coming. St. Andrew's life and the Advent season inspire believers to cultivate faith, hope, and love while awaiting the divine presence in their lives.
For at least the past century a prayer was developed as a daily preparation for Christmas and took November 30 as its starting point. It is sometimes called the Christmas Novena, St. Andrew’s Novena, St. Andrew’s Christmas Prayer, or the Christmas Anticipation Prayer.
It is a beautiful prayer that focuses on the moment of Christ’s birth and can act as a great meditation for Advent. The prayer is customarily prayed 15 times a day, but it can be prayed once a day or whenever one remembers throughout Advent.
If you are looking for a prayer to pray during Advent to prepare your heart to receive Christ, try the “Christmas Novena.”
Hail and blessed be the hour and moment
In which the Son of God was born
Of the most pure Virgin Mary,
at midnight,
in Bethlehem,
in the piercing cold.
In that hour vouchsafe, O my God,
to hear my prayer and grant my desires,
[here mention your request]
through the merits of Our Savior Jesus Christ,
and of His blessed Mother. Amen.
Thank you to those families who have already donated to the St Vincent De Paul Christmas Appeal. Week 9 is “Christmas Week” and students will be able to buy lolly bags, raffle tickets, bring in gifts and donate a gold coin on Friday’s Christmas Dress Up day. The list of gifts for each year level is below. Thank you for your support of those in need this Christmas.

A Message from our Assistant Principal, Pastoral Care
At Carroll College, we have a strong commitment to providing an environment where our students feel connected to each other and supported by the staff and the structures we have in place. Each day students experience this connection which is enhanced when they engage with the additional pastoral care and wellbeing opportunities on offer. Even as the year is drawing to a close, students are still enjoying a range of activities, and a huge thank you goes to our staff for organising and facilitating these experiences.
Pastoral Days
Pastoral Days offer an opportunity to focus on topics relevant to a particular age group. Year 10 led by Mrs Lyttle and Year 9, under the guidance of Mr McAteer have already enjoyed their day while Year 8 and Mrs Smith are looking forward to theirs in Week 9.
Ms Boller organised a very successful experience for Year 7 last week. The theme was 'respectful relationships' and the students spent this time learning about the main qualities we need to adopt to have a healthy relationship with our friends and others in our lives. The guest from Catholic Earth Care (Caritas) led the students in activities about caring for our environment and understanding the needs of people and our surroundings. The students embraced the day and it was very impressive to see them respond in a mature way when placed in 'random groups' and challenged with activities that were testing their comfort zones. Congratulations Year 7 and thank you to all the staff who supported this day.
Young Change Agent Discovery Program
The Young Change Agent Discovery Program has been a new initiative for 2023 organised by our Wellbeing Coordinator Ms Boller. Earlier in the year our girls had their day. Last Monday we offered the program to our boys. Fifty Year 8 and 9 boys chose to participate. The goal for the day was to work as a team and develop an idea that they would later pitch to the rest of the group. The idea had to be something that would fit the brief for a social enterprise aimed at positively changing an area in a chosen community group. In groups, the students presented ideas such as an eco-friendly fishing lure, a Malua Bay bike riders map, a 'Vatimin' to deliver vitamins and another a bio-degradable chewing gum. The group that took the winning prize designed a space in Batemans Bay that would provide youth with somewhere to escape to and have fun. Thank you to the staff who supported the students and Ms Boller for this experience. They were very impressed with you!
Way ahead program
In Term 1, they completed the Coaching Young People for Success Career and Life modules to create an inspiring and achievable life and career pathway plan. During Terms 2, 3 and 4 the students had the opportunity to participate in the Interventions Plus modules of RAGE, Feeling Fantastic and Managing the Bull to further develop emotional skills and work toward ensuring success in life. We hope that the skills from this course assist students to achieve their goals for the future whilst developing their mental and physical health, building career and life skills, community engagement, social and cultural connectedness.
Thank you to Campbell Page and the program presenters. We look forward to working with you again in 2024.
Year 10 Soiree
The photos clearly show what a special night our Year 10 students had as they dressed up for the Soiree. Thank goodness the severe storms of the afternoon before did not reappear to dampen the fun. The Hall was transformed as the venue and our Hospitality students created and served a delicious menu before students hit the dance floor to celebrate the end of Year 10. Thank you to Mrs Lyttle and Mr McAteer for leading the organisation of this event. Thank you to the students who assisted on the night and the staff who attended to celebrate with Year 10.
Celebrating Success Assembly save the date
Our final assembly for 2023 will be held on Wednesday, 13 December in the Hall. Families are welcome to attend so please mark this date in your diaries with the time to be confirmed next week.
Kind regards,

Celebrating Student Success and Looking Ahead
Dear Carroll Community,
As we near the conclusion of this term, I would like to take this opportunity to express my admiration for all the dedication, perseverance, and hard work throughout these past few weeks. The enthusiasm and determination exhibited by our new Year 12 cohort has been particularly inspiring. Stepping into the Higher School Certificate (HSC) year is a significant milestone, and their focused approach to learning and adapting to the challenges has set a remarkable precedent for the months ahead.
As we approach the end of term, it is essential to remind ourselves of the purpose behind our collective hard work. The Semester 2 (Year 7-10) reports, scheduled to be available in Week 10, will reflect student progress and achievements. They stand as a testament to the dedication displayed by students and will serve as a guide for continued growth.
Remember students, your journey doesn't end here. These reports are not merely an evaluation of your efforts but a tool to identify areas of improvement and set new goals for the future. Your unwavering commitment to academic excellence is a testament to your potential for continued success.
I encourage you to take a moment during this break to rejuvenate, spend time with loved ones, and reflect on your accomplishments. Use this time to recharge and return with renewed vigour for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
Once again, thank you for your ongoing dedication and hard work. Your resilience and commitment continue to inspire us all.
Warm regards,
Andrew Kenneally

As the 2023 schooling year draws to a close, the work of the Inclusive Learning team ramps up as we organise all the transition information for our incoming students in 2024. This work involves collating paperwork information, having handover meetings with Year 6 teachers, welcoming students and families to our orientation sessions and meeting our new students. It is an exciting time for us! We look forward to welcoming our new Year 7 students for 2024 and all our new students across the year groups.
This year our excitement is tempered by saying farewell to Mrs Cheryle King our Classroom Support Teacher. Cheryle has led Learning Support for many years and has been a key member of the Inclusive Learning team since its inception two years ago.
Cheryle sowed the seeds for her succession planning some four years ago. It was in working with her to support our students that Cheryle sparked the ember for me to work in Learning Support and promote inclusion. Cheryle has been my guide, my mentor, my reality check and my values-anchor. Cheryle’s unwavering position of putting the needs of the students first has been the foundation stone of Learning Support she has built at Carroll College. Cheryle will modestly claim that she stands on the shoulders of giants but Cheryle’s uncompromising advocacy for the most vulnerable students in our community has been the hallmark of her time at Carroll College and it will be a lasting legacy. Cheryle might be short in stature but the Inclusive Learning team and all of us now stand on her giant shoulders. Like you, I will miss Cheryle and I know that we wish her all the best for her well-deserved retirement.
The show must go on, as they say, and we welcome Mrs Erin Blackman to the role of Classroom Support Teacher from next year. Erin brings a wealth of Learning Support experience and will be an asset to the College community in the role. Welcome, Erin!
Inclusion is about having all students learning optimally in classrooms and providing interventions where needed. I would like to spotlight our Reading Intervention team who have done a magnificent job helping students to improve their reading and comprehension. Under the guidance of Julie Wiggins, Jodie Colbourne, Sandy Sweeney and Jenny Hopkins who is on leave have worked tirelessly with small groups and individual students. The MacqLit program is a world-class reading program and our students have made great gains developing this life-changing skill. Many thanks to the Reading Intervention team!
All parents and carers of students who have a Personalised Plan will be invited to meet during Term 1 2024 to conduct our Collaborative Curriculum Planning Meetings to update Personalised Plans and develop student goals. We are looking forward to these meetings. More information will be coming soon.
This week the Council of Catholic School Parents (NSW/ACT) launched the release of the 2nd edition of Supporting Diverse Learning in Catholic Schools: A Guide by Parents for Parents. We recommend this excellent guide to you. The guide emphasises parents and Catholic schools working in partnership for the benefit of students with diverse learning needs. Our Carroll College Community Council member, Mr Paul Penberthy, was at the launch representing the Archdiocese of Canberra and Goulburn. We thank Paul for his contribution. Leader of Inclusive Learning
The Captains' Corner - Vice Captain
Hey, I’m Alyssa Harajli, your 2023/24 College Vice Captain!
When applying to be in the leadership team, I asked myself, “What makes a good leader?” and I came to the following conclusion; To me, a leader is an individual who has a vision and is motivated to inspire others to share this vision with them. Yet, a truly extraordinary leader needs more than this, they require qualities. Qualities that involve being a good listener, ability to communicate with a variety of people, having motivation and drive, upholding integrity and inclusiveness, are innovative, having the willingness to take on any size of responsibility, able to be adaptable to change and take on challenges that arise.
I feel very privileged to hold this position for the next 12 months and assure you that the SLT is here to support each and every one of you.
Please feel free to come up to me at any time, I would love to chat with you or even just say hello!
Some facts about myself:
- My favourite colour is pink
- I have a twin sister, and I’m the eldest… by 1 minute
- I love doing makeup and going shopping
- Canberra is my hometown, I moved here in 2021
- Basketball is my favourite sport to play
Hello, my name is Michael Aitken and I am one of your college Vice Captains for the next 12 months. In this address, I will be sharing with you my personal facts, interests and hobbies. But first of all, why did I choose to be part of the SLT for 2024? Well, the answer is that I have always shown interest and a willingness to help others in any circumstances, in times of grief and in times of happiness. I strive to do my best and create a warm and safe environment for others at Carroll College and outside of school. I strongly believe that as a team everyone can achieve their goals big or small.
Here are some facts about me:
- I am a huge fan of soccer and rugby league. I support the South Sydney Rabbitohs in the NRL (the best team) and I support Liverpool FC in soccer.
- My other personal hobbies are playing the guitar at home and sometimes in front of the school for events such as assemblies, music nights, concerts and Battle of the Bands.
- My favourite artist at the moment is Taylor Swift
- My favourite band however would definitely have to be either AC/DC or Foo Fighters.
Anyway, that's all for now! So if you see me around the school don't hesitate to say hello, a simple smile can change someone's day :)

Eurobodalla St Cecilia Music Scholarship Winners
On Sunday 19 November at St. Bernard's Church, Batehaven, the winners of the Eurobodalla St Cecilia Music Scholarship were awarded following performances by each student.
We are very excited to announce that Raphaella Herford (Year 12) won the Senior Contemporary Section, winning $1000, which was sponsored by Rotary Batemans Bay.
Stephanie Bow (Year 10) was awarded third place, receiving $400, which was sponsored by the South Coast Music Society.
We are extremely proud of both students and wish them every success with their music and future careers. We would like to thank the Eurobodalla St Cecilia Music Society for the opportunity for students to participate in this competition and also for their generous sponsors.
The first Carroll College Year 8 French Film Festival to be held at the Bay Pavilions was a resounding success! Thank you to Miriam Shilling, Catherine Davis, Amy Dalgleish, Michelle Katuke, Emilie Hayes and Belinda Whitman for all their assistance. Thanks also to the ‘behind the scenes’ crew who magically make everything happen: Jane Garland, Louise Nott, Julie Davis and any others who have helped along the way.
Our Year 8’s did us proud. They were one of the best (if not THE best) groups I’ve ever taken anywhere. They listened, participated and supported each other. They loved the atmosphere of being in the theatre and seeing themselves on the big screen. Baguettes eaten, they spent an energetic afternoon in the pool and on the waterslides.
As always, we had some talented filmmakers. Winners were:
Best Film: James Collins, Indi Follett and Mitchell Love
Best use of French: Jaz Salmon, Lizzy Barrington, Kate Patyus and Maya Birks
Most Entertaining Film: Vivienne James, Porscha Mears, Brooklyn Hennock and Abbey Flavell.
If you see these students, please congratulate them.

We have had a successful start to our Craft Club this year, starting in T4.
Thursday AM break is our time to be creative and share time with each other. Our success has been gauged by students returning each week to make some jewellery, bracelets, earrings and necklaces for themselves, family and friends.
The atmosphere has been jovial at times and everyone enjoying themselves.
Some new friendships are developing, which is a great result. To finish off the year, we are doing Christmas card making.
Thank you to people who have donated items and materials for our club to use. Special thanks to Lizette Richards and Miriam Shilling for all their help.
We intend to continue in 2024, so stay tuned.
Merry Christmas, and have a safe and Holy holiday!
Cheers

On Tuesday our Year 11 geography students joined Year 11 geography students from Trinity Catholic College in Goulburn to conduct fieldwork.
The students braved the wild weather to visit Bengello Beach and Malua Bay Beach to complete a comparative study of coastal dune management processes.
The students measured the length and depth of the dunes, measured their location in comparison to the surf swash, as well as the beach gradients in both locations. Students also investigated the relationship between native and invasive species.
It was excellent for Ms Stephanie Wise from Trinity College and me to see all of our classroom learning put into action, with the students being able to clearly identify the relationship between natural geographic processes and human impacts.
Malua Bay is currently undergoing an extensive dune regeneration project, so it was invaluable for the students from both colleges to be able to take data on the current dunes and to be able to see the regeneration into the future.
Fieldwork is a mandatory aspect of Geography, and the data collected will be used towards their Core Study Assessment task early in 2024.
All the students got a lot out of this excursion and it was wonderful to see Carroll College students work with the Trinity Catholic College students gathering data and operating all of the survey equipment.
