Dear Parents, Students and Friends
Planning is well underway for end of year events and the 2024 academic year. Term 4 is a busy time for schools and in addition to regular activities, the College has the following projects in focus:
- Classroom Mastery
- A new finance system rollout with Tech One
- Introduction of Compass Lite complementing Sentral with a move to Sentral Cloud
- Child Safety Audit with the Office of the Children's Guardian
- NSW Fire Emergency Management Plan implementation
- Official Opening of refurbished facilities that was postponed due to COVID
- Transition to the new School Community Council model.
The Carroll College Community Council executive met last night in preparation for the transition to the new model of school governance, now known as School Community Council. Mr Tim Smith from Catholic Education guided Council members through the change process to understand more about our school context and our Community Council’s vision. Members worked through a Transition Questionnaire to determine the direction the council will take. Our School Community Council will start operating from 1 January 2024.
K-12 Executive Team Meeting
Yesterday our K-12 Executive teams from St Mary’s Primary School, Moruya and St Bernard’s Primary School Batemans Bay met to discuss our K-12 Pathway focus and future planning for next year. The primary objective of the K-12 pathway is:
- To improve student outcomes and provide South Coast families with a contemporary and high-quality Catholic education. It provides a clear and continuous learning pathway and includes specialisation experiences, consistently high expectations, and longer-term relationships from Kinder to Year 12.
- Enable schools, along with the Parish Priests to devote greater time to the ministry of developing the Catholic Identity and Mission across the Region.
- Provide the Principals & Leadership teams of the schools in the Region with a forum to discuss the issues that affect the collective and individual schools in the Region.
- Develop Policies, Principles for Decision-Making and/or procedures which will resource the decision-making for the collective and individual schools in the region.
Enrichment opportunities are planned for next year so Year 6 students can experience learning in the secondary context. Always exciting for primary students!
Year 7, 2024 Orientation Day
We are looking forward to welcoming our soon to be ‘new Year 7’ students when they visit next week. Year 7, 2024 Orientation Day is planned for next Friday 24 November. We have a full day of activities organised that will support a smooth transition for students as they move into their secondary education at the college. Next year we have planned for four Year 7 classes. With a new building project commencing, we have limited space and classroom capacity once construction begins.
Cultural Immersion Experience to New Caledonia 2024
We are pleased to be offering an overseas experience again following Covid. New Caledonia Study Tour is open to any 2024 Carroll College student in Years 9 or 10 who studied French in Year 8. The Tour will take place in Week 10 - Term 3, 2024 from Tuesday 24 September - Tuesday 1 October. Full details have been shared with families and already we have 20 students who have expressed an interest to date. Very exciting!
Staffing Update
I am pleased to announce that Mrs Erin Smith will be Chisholm Pastoral Coordinator (Acting) from next week as Mrs Corrinne Dell takes leave for the remainder of the term. Mrs Smith is currently in the position of Pastoral Assistant and will transition into this role with ease. I wish her well.
Thank you to Mrs Dell for her commitment throughout 2023. I’m sure she will appreciate her long service leave at this time.
Staffing for 2024 is close to being finalised. We are very fortunate to have an outstanding teaching team in place, with a strong focus on inclusive education with our support staff moving into the new year.
We place in our hearts all those in our community who need our prayers at this time.
Enjoy a relaxing weekend.

“The fruit of love is service, which is compassion in action.”
St Mother TeresaWeek 7 at Carroll College sees the launch of our annual Vinnies Christmas Appeal. Each year the college provides important and much-needed donations of cash, gifts and non-perishable food items to support those in our local community who need additional help at this time of year. To provide donations is part of our Christian calling and is a lived example of Catholic Social teaching in action. The ‘Dignity of the Human Person’ and ‘Preferential Option for the Poor’ are two Catholic Social Teachings that promote respect and care for all, regardless of their status, wealth or power. As such, members of the Carroll College community are encouraged to live out these messages of the Gospel and to love our neighbours as ourselves. I therefore ask those in our community who can, to please take part in our Vinnies Christmas Appeal.
This year St Vincent De Paul is focussing on supporting families with the cost of living. The society prefers cash donations as they can then direct funds where they are most needed. Some of the costs they anticipate covering over Christmas this year include:
To ensure that Vinnies receive a wide range of gifts to share across the needs of the families in our community, each Year level has been asked to focus on a different type of gift donation. As always, families are welcome to provide a cash donation which can be made via Qrk! from next week.
Year 7 |
Gifts for children aged between 0 and 4 - toys, clothing, books |
Year 8 |
Gifts for children aged between 5 and 9 - toys, clothing, books |
Year 9 |
Gifts for children aged between 10 and 14 - toys, clothing, books |
Year 10 |
Gifts for children aged between 15 and 18 - clothing, books, gift vouchers |
Year 11 |
Non-perishable Christmas foods, decorations, festive tableware (no alcohol) |
Students are asked to please bring in their donations during Weeks 7-10. Donations will need to be in the school by the start of Week 10. Donations are to be given to Homeroom teachers.
I thank you for your support of this appeal and of those in our community who need "a hand-up, not a hand-out.”

A Message from our Assistant Principal, Pastoral Care
We have had a busy few weeks in the Pastoral office, with many events happening and lots more coming up.
The Student Leadership Team ran a fundraiser on 27 October to raise money for the Daniel Morcombe Foundation; all students were encouraged to wear Red and donate a gold coin to the "Day for Daniel". This is the Daniel Morcombe Foundation’s biggest fundraiser each year. Our support through fundraising helps the foundation to continue developing free resources and programs for parents, carers, and educators to teach children how to stay safe; a very worthy cause.

On 8 November we joined our Class of 2023 for their Graduation Dinner celebration. It was a lovely evening celebrating their achievements and it was wonderful to see the students and their families all looking very glamourous. Mrs Amy Dalgleish and our fantastic hospitality students did an amazing job catering to over 250 guests. A huge congratulations and thank you goes out to all of the staff and students involved in this fabulous event.

Year 9 participated in their Pastoral Day this week. All of the Year 9 students came together to focus on Resilience. They participated in team-building exercises; planted trees for future students and were treated to workshops from Ella Ryan - Canberra Raiders NRLW and Tim Cornforth from Niche Power Performance. The male and female students were split into different groups with presentations specific to them. The students had a fantastic day, with all of them coming away more resilient and closer as a cohort.

Academic care lessons are still being delivered with each year group focusing on specific goals like; assessment preparation, successful study techniques, and time management skills.
We have launched the senior mentor program with Year 12 students. Students and staff have been paired up to support our senior students as they begin their HSC course and will meet regularly in the coming year.
We have many 'Career' opportunities on offer at the moment with most Year 10 students nominating their work experience electives. Carroll College has been invited to participate in a career information session with NSW Marine Rescue in Batemans Bay. There are still a few places left if your child is in Years 10-12 and is interested in attending. 'Be a Mechanic' is starting at Moruya Tafe as well.
Aboriginal students are still attending Dhurga lessons every week with Aunty Trish Ellis facilitating. This is a wonderful opportunity for our students to learn their local language and to maintain this language in the future. Next week the Koori Tidas Program will be teaching our Aboriginal girls how to make traditional jewellery.
We have many events coming up in the next few weeks with the Year 7 Pastoral Day, the Year 9 Formation Day, the Year 7 Orientation Day, the Year 10 Spring Soiree, and Young Change Agents - Discovery Program for Years 8 and 9 boys.
I would like to thank Mrs Corrine Dell, Chisolm Pastoral Coordinator for all of her work this year in support of our students and wish her a wonderful holiday as she takes Long Service Leave for the remainder of the term, and welcome Mrs Erin Smith into the role for the rest of the year.

A Message from our Assistant Principal Curriculum, Learning and Innovation
Dear Carroll Community,
As we approach the final weeks of the term, students in Year 10 will be engaging in an online learning experience, All My Own Work in Week 7. This program is designed to help HSC students follow the principles and practices of good scholarship. This includes understanding, valuing, and using ethical practices when locating and using information as part of their HSC studies.
Students who have completed the program will also learn about penalties for cheating and how to avoid malpractice when preparing their work for assessment.
To be eligible for the HSC, students must complete HSC: All My Own Work (or its equivalent) before they submit any work for Preliminary (Year 11) or HSC (Year 12) courses, unless they are only entered for Year 11 and Year 12 Life Skills courses.
There are five modules the students will complete next week:
- Module One: Scholarship Principles and Practices
- Module Two: Acknowledging Sources
- Module Three: Plagiarism
- Module Four: Copyright
- Module Five: Working with others
HSC National Minimum Standards
Students need reading, writing and numeracy for everyday life after school.
This is why students in NSW are being supported to meet a minimum standard of literacy and numeracy to receive the HSC.
To show they meet the HSC minimum standard, students need to achieve Level 3 or 4 in short online reading, writing and numeracy tests of skills for everyday life.
Some students with disability studying Life Skills courses may be exempt from meeting the minimum standard to receive their HSC credential.
Together with the NSW Literacy and Numeracy Strategy, the HSC minimum standard is part of an effort to improve the literacy and numeracy outcomes for students.
Students at Carroll will have ample opportunity to meet the minimum standards, commencing from Year 10. Students who were unsuccessful in the first round will receive extra assistance to achieve these standards over the next few weeks. Information will be coming out shortly to map out a plan moving forward for our students.

Sentral and Compass
Sentral remains our main Student Management System for attendance explanations, parent-teacher interview bookings, and accessing reports, timetables, and daily notices.
We will only use Compass for excursions, permissions, and payments.
Qkr! remains available for purchasing school uniforms, EVET payments, and calculators until further notice.
Sentral App for Parents
We are excited to introduce the Sentral for Parents App, which provides a convenient gateway to the Sentral Parent Portal. It simplifies access to important information like student timetables, daily notices, and school reports. Additionally, parents can now effortlessly submit absence notes directly to the school via the app.
Download the app today!
Once you have downloaded the app, search for Carroll College and log in using your Sentral username and password.
We hope you find it an easy way to access your portal information.

School Fees and Billing System Changes
Carroll College in partnership with Catholic Education, Archdiocese of Canberra & Goulburn (CECG), has now migrated to a new finance system to generate efficiencies that work alongside the Compass parent portal and Compass mobile application, giving parents or guardians visibility of their financial transactions within Compass.
Additionally, changes will affect the way you pay student tuition fees, levies, and other payments.
School Fee Statement Changes
School fee statements will have a new look. A new Customer Reference Number (CRN) has been created and payment methods have been updated. A statement will be sent out shortly that will contain an updated BPAY Biller Code and CRN that will need to be utilised going forward.
Statements will be emailed to financially responsible account holders each month, so it is necessary to ensure that your information is updated in the Compass parent portal, including your address and current email address.
Payment Methods
To support the changes in the school finance system, BPAY is now the preferred payment method.
You will receive your new statement shortly, which will contain the new BPAY Biller code and your new CRN. Utilising these new unique codes will ensure that any payments made will be accurately assigned to your account.
BPAY payment scheduling is supported by most financial institutions. Please contact your bank for further details if required. If you already have scheduled BPAY payments in place, it is important that you ensure these details are updated to use the new BPAY Biller Code and CRN.
Payments can be made through Compass, but this does cost the school transactional fees, reducing the funds available to support the school. Where possible, please pay school fees via BPAY or directly at the school office via cash or EFTPOS.
Student Absences
As we approach the end of the term, I would like to remind parents about completing their child's unexplained absences. Reports will be distributed at the end of Term 4 and explained absences ensure your child’s attendance records are accurate and reported correctly.
To complete your child's absence reports:
- Log in to your Sentral Parent Portal.
- Navigate to the Absences section.
- Review your unexplained absences and provide a brief explanation for each.
Parents can review their child’s attendance records by selecting their child's profile and navigating to Attendance.

Welcome to the 2023/24 Captains Corner, the newest addition to the Carroll College Newsletter! The Captains Corner is the first initiative we make as school captains and it is designed to give you some insight into who your new SLT members are as individuals and what our intentions are for the College. With each fortnightly newsletter, there will be a new pair of College Captains introduced and hopefully as the months progress, you will become more familiar with each of us, causing us to become closer as a College Community.
To begin with…
Hi, I’m Macy Follett, I am your College Captain!
I applied for school captain because I value community and I am passionate about building and strengthening my fellow students’ school experience. I understand that school isn’t for everyone and the SLT team and I have been brainstorming ways that we can include a wider variety of activities that involve more student interest. My ultimate goal as your school captain in the coming 12 months is to be an approachable senior that students see as non-threatening and fun. I am not here to be scary so please approach me, Liam or any other SLT member and have a chat. A couple of fun facts about me:
- I love the colour blue and baby purple,
- My favourite TV show is Friends… I have watched it from start to finish 3 times,
- I love to sing… but I would really like to learn how to play guitar one day
- I usually chose lollies over chocolates,
- And I generally sit outside D block and my friends will tell you that if you can’t see me, you can usually hear me… speaking or laughing.
Hello everyone, my name is Liam Walsh and I’m one of your College Captains!
I only enrolled at this school earlier this year and already I’ve been warmly welcomed by this college. The Carroll College community has given me so much and I decided I needed to give back, so I applied to be school captain. My role here is to make your lives happier, easier, and more fulfilling so that when I leave school, the college is even better than it was before. No matter what circumstance, I’ll always be a listening ear to any and all of your problems and from there, Macy and I, and the SLT, can make positive changes to the school. Here are some facts about me:
- My favourite movie is, and always will be, Lord of the Rings (I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve watched it)
- My favourite animal is definitely Chickens, I’ve got 6 of them.
- I’ve got a strong interest in blacksmithing, which is something I’m definitely going to learn soon.
- I love football and my favourite team is probably Manchester United
- And believe it or not, I live in Milton and travel 1 hour to school each day!
Feel free to approach me with any questions, thoughts, or basically anything at all! I’m usually outside D block too, but you can also email me whenever you need to.

This year, two Carroll College students, Raphaella Herford (Year 12) and Stephanie Bow (Year 10), will be performing at the Finalist Concert alongside the finalists from other schools. Stephanie will play a contemporary piano piece, while Raphaella will sing a contemporary song. Both girls are competing in the Senior Contemporary section of the scholarship program and will be awarded significant monetary prizes at this event. Year 9/10 Boys B Team
After a number of years away from Cootamundra, it was great to be back playing Touch Football again in Regional NSW.
The Year 9/10 Boys B Team was made up of a number of players who traditionally have not played a lot of touch football before. It was great to see their enthusiasm in the weeks prior by their excellent attendance at our training sessions. They learned a lot.
The team consisted of: Ryan Johnston (C), Seth Middleton, Bluey Spies, Akin Suksing, Will Dallas, Bailey Phillips, George Gilbo, and Luke Drewson.
Six matches were contested on the day and the team came away with a strong showing winning three of them. Unfortunately, we were one win away from qualifying for the semi-finals. Our results were:
- Win 6 points to 3 v St Anne's 1
- Loss 7 points to 2 v Trinity 1
- Loss 11 points to 0 v Temora 1
- Loss 7 points to 0 v Hennessy 1
- Win 11 points to 0 v Sacred Heart 2
- Win 7 points to 2 v Hennessy 3
It was a pleasure coaching this team and it was evident the boys had a great time on their first experience travelling to Cootamundra. Hopefully, they will all try out next year and improve on this performance.
Mr Paul Graziani
9/10 Boys A Team
The 9/10 Boys team has been eagerly awaiting their opportunity to play at Cootamundra. The squad, who has been training throughout Terms 3 and 4, has worked hard to develop their knowledge of the game. Many of the team had not played in a competitive touch football match this year, and with the help of our experienced players, have greatly developed their knowledge of the game.
Members of the squad were Will McAteer, Zane Brady, Max Colbourne, Nate Pike, Kodi Perkins, Josh Nyugen, Jesse Coppin, Cooper Talbot, Adam Klekner, and Jeremy Scicluna. I would also like to recognise Lincoln Dell, Callum Coulter and Bill Eppleston who were unfortunately unavailable to play, but were integral in our preparation for the tournament.
The team was faced with a daunting schedule of six pool games to be followed by potentially two finals. In Cootamundra, pool results are crucial as the short game lengths always make for close matches. They started the day well with convincing wins over Hennessy 2, Sacred Heart 3 and McCauley. Game four saw the boys come up against the much stronger opposition of Sacred Heart 1. After giving up an early two-try lead, they were unable to score the three tries needed to win. This meant that our next two games were must-wins in order to make finals. Cootamundra High 1 was also a high-quality team. The CCB boys had to remain patient as both teams kept a clean defensive sheet for the first 10 minutes. We eventually cracked the defense to score, and although Coota crossed our line, the first try scorer rule gave CCB the victory. The final pool game was an exhibition of quality touch football from the CCB boys scoring six tries to one.In the semi-final, we were pitted against the first-place team from Pool 1, Trinity 1. Again it was a close game, with both teams defending their line desperately. Once again Carroll scored the first try and this was enough for the victory and a grand final berth and a chance for redemption against the undefeated Sacred Heart 1. The boys learned a lot of lessons, particularly in defense, from their first encounter. They remained patient and calm. Defending strongly and working for a good field position. We eventually cracked them with a quick scoot from Kodi to set Zane down the sideline for the try. Although we had a momentary lapse letting in a Sacred Heart try, the boys regrouped and defended tenaciously until the hooter and took the victory.
It was a tremendous effort by the whole team and a testament to their work leading up to the tournament. Congratulations to Kodi who was fittingly named Player of the Grand Final.
Mr Jon Brady
7/8 boys
I had the pleasure of coaching the boys' Year 7/8 touch football team for the Cootamundra Touch Carnival in 2023. The team consisted of Sonny Cottington, Roary Colburn, Cameron Paull, Indi Follett, James Collins, Dusty Irving, Archer Schuchmann, Nick Wain, Jacob Borg, Zac Whipp and Bailey Pepper. We played 6 pool games in the main draw and won all 6 in convincing fashion only allowing 1 try in defence during these games. The boys worked together as a team, communicated effectively, and defended their line brilliantly. Heat and fatigue was starting to take its toll on some of the players as we prepared for our semi-final. The boys dug deep after an early scare from the opposition and came back to win 3 tries to 1. With little time to prepare for the final, we were back on the field ready to face Hennessy Catholic College from Young. Young started strong and had us on the back foot early scoring 2 quick tries. We rallied together and managed to break through and be next to score. Unfortunately for us, Young proved a little too quick around the ruck and managed to score the next try putting the game out of reach. The boys dug deep once again to give it their all in the final few minutes but it wasn’t enough to overcome the highly skilled Young side. The team never gave up and they are to be commended on their skill, effort, and sportsmanship during the day. Each member of the team played their part in reaching the final which was a tremendous effort. Congratulations boys on an amazing effort throughout the day!
Mr Charlton Fogarty
7/8 Girls
The Year 7 and 8 girls were bursting with excitement and some nerves to get out to Cootamundra and represent the College in the touch tournament as this was their first experience with the Coota trip. The team consisted of Brooklyn Hennock, Taylah Cassidy, Lily Mahoney, Layne Blewitt, Kaylee Lloyd, Tayla Colebrook, Kate Patyus, Morgan Davis, Elyssa Welsh, Maddison Lloyd and Jaz Salmon. We played 6 games in our pool consisting of 3 convincing wins and 3 losses finishing 3rd in Pool B. The girls came up against Sacred Heart Cootamundra in the first match of the day with a 15-0 win boosting their confidence ready for a long day ahead. They then came up against a well-drilled Trinity Goulburn team who beat them 11-0. By the third game, the heat was starting to set in and the girls were enjoying the fact that they had a couple of extra subs. With the short game times, the girls lost their third and fourth pool games against two different Hennessy Young teams and then had two convincing wins against McCauley Tumut and St Annes Temora. During the day the girls soon worked out the importance of scoring the first try to gain that 1-point advantage. With a mix of both year groups, the girls trained hard in the lead-up to the tournament to work well together and showed good team spirit, effort, and skill on the day. It was a pleasure to take this group of girls to Cootamundra and they should be very proud of the way they represented the College.
Miss Ellisha Large
9/10 Girls
It was a pleasure to take the Year 9/10 girls' team out to Cootamundra this year. Team members included Chelsea Tyrrell, Laylah Bettridge, Kehlei Cowan, Emily Borg, Matilda Bell, Charlotte Welsh, Alexis Leth, Charlotte Buechner, and Kiera Pendlebury. Some of the girls in the team had never played touch before but all girls made a strong effort on the field. Playing four games over the day, the team worked together and started strong playing Trinity in the first round. The team had four tries disallowed but continued to work hard and were able to get the win. The next game saw the girls take on St Anne's. This was a much faster game and unfortunately, the team didn’t get the win. As the heat started to set in, the girl's games became more challenging, with the team taking on Sacred Heart 3 in their third game. The girls worked hard and communicated well with each other to secure a victory. This game saw some of the newer team members shine with many tries being scored. It was fantastic to see the celebrations from all team members when our players crossed the line. After one win and two losses, the girls needed a victory in their fourth game to progress to the finals. Our fourth and final game saw the team take on the skilled Sacred Heart 1. Unfortunately, Sacred Heart scored the first try which gave them a one-point advantage. The team worked hard to come back scoring another two tries but sadly lost by a point because of the first try. The girls had a great day and showed tremendous team spirit with each other and the other teams. It was so good to see the smiles and hear the cheering, especially after our newer members got involved and helped secure some of our tries.

The ADF Gap program offers the chance to experience life in the Navy, Army or Air Force, where you'll get paid for meaningful work while travelling around Australia, gaining skills for life, and making lifelong friends.
